New Delhi: Tata Power has joined hands with the Maharashtra government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of two pumped hydro storage projects (PSP) worth ₹13,000 crore.

The two projects will have a combined capacity of 2800 megawatt and help the state achieve its goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2028. The two plants will be situated in Shirvata, Pune (1800 MW) and Bhivpuri, Raigad (1000 MW) and will generate employment for over 6,000 people.

Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha attended the signing ceremony which was held in the Mantralaya in Mumbai.

“The signing of this MoU is a major step forward in Tata Power's journey towards clean and green energy future. Pumped Hydro Storage is a reliable and efficient way to store energy, and these projects will support the renewable solar and wind projects to ensure reliable, 24/7 consistent power supply. This is a historic moment for both Maharashtra and Tata Power, and we are proud to be a part of this initiative," said Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power.

During times of excess energy, water will be pumped from lower reservoir to higher reservoir, and during peak demand, the stored water will power turbines, thereby generating electricity. This initiative will significantly enhance energy security by providing peaking and continuous power supply along with other renewables such as solar and wind. With the setting up of 2800 MW pumped hydro capacity, these projects will significantly contribute to cleaner capacity addition in the country.

The Western Ghats, with their natural topography and favourable geology offer immense potential for pumped hydro storage projects. Tata Power's legacy in this region spans a century, operating three hydro power projects - Khopoli Hydro Generating Station, Bhivpuri Hydro Generating Station, and Bhira Hydro Generating Station that includes 150 MW Pumped Storage Hydro project, the company said.

The clean and sustainable power generated from these projects has played an important role in the economic and commercial development of Mumbai and its surroundings, while the water released from these plants has been instrumental in the overall economic growth of Raigad and Thane districts, it added.

Mumbai: Brookfield and Axis Energy Ventures have entered their second joint venture partnership to establish a renewable energy development platform.

Brookfield, through its Brookfield Global Transition Fund II (BGTF II), has committed to provide equity capital of up to $845 million towards development and construction of the power projects, a joint release said.

Axis Energy Ventures will contribute its existing development pipeline of wind and solar power projects, spread across the country and at various stages of development.

"Under this strategic partnership, both partners will leverage their expertise and resources to jointly provide curated energy solutions to various industry participants, including government entities, corporate customers, and emerging industries such as green hydrogen," the release said.

“We foresee strong growth in India on the back of the government's target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, and its stated objective of energy security. This demand will be increasingly fulfilled by scaled renewable assets combining multiple technologies, such as solar, wind and storage," said Nawal Saini, managing director at Brookfield.

Brookfield has more than 16GW of wind and solar assets in operation or in the development pipeline across India. Since 2019, Brookfield and Axis Energy Ventures, through their earlier joint venture, have collaborated to develop over 1.8 GW of solar and wind assets.

"Through this new platform, we will together accelerate the development of renewable energy projects in India with a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. This exciting partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to accelerate India's transition to clean and sustainable energy sources," said Kataru Ravi Kumar Reddy, chairman and managing director of Axis Energy Group.

As a clean-tech company, Axis Energy Ventures has focused on developing, owning, and operating of wind, solar, wind-solar hybrid, and renewable energy projects along with storage solutions through battery, pumped hydro, etc. Axis Energy group has a renewable development portfolio of around10 GW across the country at various stages of implementation.

Disqualification Of Shiv Sena MLAs

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Sep 21, 2023

Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday said Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar's decision on the disqualification pleas against some Shiv Sena MLAs will be unbiased and will adhere to the law.

Asked whether the BJP had a “plan B" in case the MLAs, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, are disqualified and if names like Ajit Pawar, Devendra Fadnavis, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Union minister Nitin Gadkari were being discussed for the top post, he said he had no such information.

“I am confident Narwekar, who is a legal expert, will take a decision in accordance with the law. His decision will not be biased and will be within the rules of the House," the state BJP chief told reporters.

Speaking to reporters on board the luxury Deccan Odyssey train earlier in the day, Narwekar emphasised the decision he will take will be constitutional.

“Regarding the disqualification pleas, I can only say I won't delay it nor will there be any kind of hurry that could result in miscarriage of justice," he said.

The Shiv Sena split in June last year after a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde, who went on to become chief minister with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

However, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction filed pleas seeking the disqualification of several MLAs, including Shinde, under anti-defection laws.

The Supreme Court had, on May 11, directed the Assembly speaker to decide on the disqualification pleas within a reasonable time.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) has been claiming Narwekar was deliberately delaying in arriving at a decision on the disqualification pleas.

Asked about Narwekar's trip to Delhi, Bawankule said he did not know if the visit was in connection with the disqualification issue.

Incidentally, speaking to reporters on board the Deccan Odyssey earlier in the day, Narwekar had said his visit to Delhi was pre-planned in order to take part in some meetings.

Asked about the absence of President Droupadi Murmu from the event that saw inauguration of the new Parliament earlier this week, Bawankule said Prime Minister Narendra Modi does all work in accordance with the tradition and rules of Parliament.

BJP Leader Warns Maharashtra CM Shinde of

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Sep 18, 2023

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Maharashtra and its “Dhangar face" Gopichand Padalkar has warned chief minister Eknath Shinde of a protest by the community like the Jat agitation from a few years ago that caused tremors in the country. Padalkar, who is also a member of the legislative council (MLC), wrote a two-page letter to the CM, asking him to call a meeting over the demands of the Dhangar community. He has also asked that the case, which the Maharashtra government is fighting in the high court, and that the administration's schemes so far have started to give some relief to the community till the time the issue of reservation doesn't get resolved should be communicated to the community leaders in the meeting.

The Dhangar (shepherd) community has been for long demanding the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which will allow it to avail reservation in government jobs and education.

Padalkar has also asked the chief minister to appoint former advocate general and senior counsel Aashutosh Kumbhakoni permanently for the case of the Dhangar reservations being heard in the HC.

The BJP leader, who has frequently raised his voice for the rights of the Dhangar and OBC communities, also asked CM Shinde to formulate a separate law to protect the shepherds, as there have been instances of the members of the community being attacked. He has also reminded the chief minister in the letter to appoint the president of the cooperative society announced for shepherds by the state government for which it has promised to spend Rs 10,000 crore.

Padalkar has also asked the chief minister to instruct the state government and its concerned department to review all the schemes announced and initiated for the Dhangar community. He is of the opinion that “though govt had said that they will have different schemes for the community for which govt was ready to spend Rs 1,000 crore and some 22 schemes were planned but due to lack of funds not a single scheme was implemented, hence review of this is must".

In his letter, Padalkar has also reminded chief minister Shinde that the way the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad were changed, in the same manner, the name of Ahmednagar district and city should also be changed to Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Nagar as a mark of respect to Queen Ahilyadevi Holkar.

The BJP leader also wrote that though the Dhangar community wants all its problems to be resolved through constitutional means, if the government doesn't pay attention and there are further delays, a “Jat-style protest" may take place in Maharashtra.

PM Modi can't be defeated by ‘sheep and goats’

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Sep 18, 2023
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde criticizes opposition parties, says they cannot put up a fight against PM Modi (PTI)

Taking a sharp jibe at the opposition parties, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said "sheep and goats" cannot put up a fight against a lion in a jungle.

CM Shinde told a Hindi channel, “The opposition only thinks about defeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I do not see anywhere the opposition is putting up a fight."

“I will not call opposition vultures but sheep and goats cannot come together to put up a fight against a lion in a jungle. A lion is always a lion and he would rule the jungle."

On the National Democratic Alliance in Maharashtra, Shinde said, “After Ajit Pawar decided to join us, my government (BJP-Shiv Sena-Ajit Pawar faction of NCP) enjoys the support of 215 plus MLAs. There is no threat to the government."

Maharashtra sends 48 members to Lok Sabha, the second highest in the country after Uttar Pradesh which elects 80 parliamentarians.

Meanwhile, in a veiled attack at the predecessor Uddhav Thackeray, Shinde said, “We are doing work for the people. People will decide whether they want someone who works for them or the one who merely sits at home."

Queried on the allegation that the Enforcement Directorate is being used to target leaders from the opposition camp, Shinde said, “The ED takes action against those who are suspected to have indulged in corrupt practices. It does not harass anyone just like that."

Maratha’ Manus Eknath Shinde

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Sep 16, 2023

Manoj Jarange, the poster boy of Maratha reservation ended his hunger strike after 17 days on Thursday, as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told him that his government was in favour of the quota and that steps were being taken in that direction.

ALSO READ | Jalna Protest Leader Manoj Jarange is now the Face of Maratha Reservation Demand in Maharashtra

After breaking his fast, Jarange spoke to his supporters and the media and reinforced his trust and faith in the CM. Shinde, a Maratha himself, also assured the community that his government was committed to the reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs.

While all this was unfolding, one thing went unnoticed — both the deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis (Bharatiya Janata Party) and Ajit Pawar (Nationalist Congress Party), were absent.

However, other BJP leaders such as Union Minister of State for Railways Raosaheb Danve, Maharashtra Cabinet minister Girish Mahajan, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, along with Sena (Shinde faction) leaders Sandeepan Bhumare, Uday Samant and Arjun Khotkar were present. Even former minister and NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction leader Rajesh Tope was present.

Jarange showing faith in Shinde over his deputies shows that his supporters and he trust the Chief Minister and nobody else. The reason could be the lathicharge on Jarange's supporters a week ago.

When Shinde formed the government, it was evident that the state was running on the instructions of Fadnavis. As the survey advertisement ‘Modi for India and Shinde for Maharashtra' featured, the differences between these two leaders increased. The lathicharge on Jarange's supporters in Jalna gave Shinde the opportunity to emerge as a leader, while the opposition raised questions over Fadnavis, who is the home minister of the state.

Although Fadnavis apologised for the incident, it reignited the Maratha reservation issue and many protests were staged. Protests were even reported at Baramati, the hometown of Ajit Pawar, asking him to leave this government. Since the Jalna incident, both the deputy chief ministers have distanced themselves from the issue. But the BJP and NCP Ajit Pawar faction have declined the rumours of differences.

According to Fadnavis's office, he could not visit Jalna as he was on the official Rajasthan tour, where he even addressed a rally.

When Fadnavis was the Chief Minister of the state, the Maratha community held huge protest rallies in different parts of the state with the demand for reservation. Political analysts felt that the issue of Maratha reservation, which was kept on the backburner, was again brought to the forefront, just to push Fadnavis on the back foot.

Last Monday, a video of CM Shinde went viral, in which he is seen saying, “We need to speak out and leave…”

Shinde was trolled by the opposition and it was also portrayed that the current government is not serious about the issue. Later, Shinde issued a clarification.

According to Shiv Sena leader and former mayor of Thane Naresh Mhaske, “The CM is first a karyakarta and a ground leader. He doesn't have any ego and went personally to meet Jarange, who was protesting for the community.”

The visuals from the meet made it clear that Shinde is portraying himself as the only leader of Maharashtra and the chief ministerial face.

After Saudi Arabia

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Sep 15, 2023
United Arab Emirates has evinced interest in having grid connectivity with India. (File Photo: Bloomberg)

New Delhi: Days after India signed an energy agreement with Saudi Arabia, Union minister for new and renewable energy (MNRE) R.K. Singh on Friday said that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also evinced interest in having grid connectivity with India.

On 10 September, India and Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of energy, which also included cooperation in grid connectivity.

Singh said that connecting India's power grid with that of Saudi Arabia and the UAE would help India supply power to Europe as the European grid would also be connected to the grid in the West Asian region.

The minister said that the energy pact would encourage cooperation in the field of renewable energy, green hydrogen, good ammonia, among others. He said that finance from Saudi funds may be cheaper for India projects and the pact would also help Indian green energy companies to set up plants in Saudi Arabia.

The pact would help boost bilateral investment in the field of hydrogen and storage, and oil and gas, according to a statement released on 11 September. Carbon capture, utilization and storage were also covered under the MoU.

Both the countries would also cooperate in promoting digital transformation, innovation and cyber-security and artificial intelligence in the field of energy and develop qualitative partnerships to localize materials, products and services related to all sectors of energy, supply chains and its technologies.

"The MoU will develop a stronger partnership between India and Saudi Arabia in the field of energy. The MoU will support India's efforts for energy transition and transformation of global energy system towards combating climate change," the statement had said.

Maratha Quota Activist Jarange Seeks Meeting with CM Shinde Before Withdrawing His Fast Published 43 minutes ago

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Sep 13, 2023

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange has demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde meet him so that he can withdraw his hunger strike.

Jarange made the demand late Tuesday night after speaking to CM Shinde over a phone call.

State Industries Minister Uday Samant met the activist late night.

Earlier on Tuesday, Jarange said he was ready to end his indefinite hunger strike, which he started on August 29, but would not leave the protest site at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district until the state government starts issuing Kunbi caste certificates to the Maratha community from the Marathwada region.

The activist also said he was giving one month's time to the Maharashtra government so that a state-appointed committee could prepare its report on the Maratha reservation.

Speaking to reporters late Tuesday night, Jarange said, “I want Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to come here so that I can withdraw my fast for the Maratha quota. We will subsequently continue a chain fasting along with my supporters at the same protest site.”

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday issued orders suspending Jalna district Additional Superintendent of Police Rahul Khade and Ambad tehsil Sub Divisional Police Officer Mukund Aghav for the lathicharge on pro-Maratha quota agitators at Antarwali Sarati village earlier this month.

Two separate suspension orders were issued by the state home department.

Thackeray, Raut told me to attack Manohar Joshi’s house

Eknath Shinde faction leader and MLA Sada Sarvankar. (ANI)

Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) MLA Sada Sarvankar on Monday claimed that former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and MP Sanjay Raut had instigated him to attack Manohar Joshi's residence in Mumbai's Shivaji Park area.

Speaking to ANI, Sarvankar said, “I was told by Uddhav Thackeray to attack Manohar Joshi's residence because the latter had opposed my ticket. As I left with my workers, I received a call from Sanjay Raut instructing me to carry petrol and to set the house of Manohar Joshi on fire."

The Shinde faction MLA accused Uddhav Thackeray of blackmailing him for the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections ticket.

“Thackeray had called me to his residence and said that I would not be getting the ticket for the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections since Manohar Joshi had opposed his candidature. Hence Thackeray had instructed me to visit Joshi's house and attack," he said.

Oil spill from Uran plant caused no damage to farmers

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Sep 10, 2023
Oil spill from Uran plant caused no damage to farmers, fishermen, says ONGC: REUTERS/Amit Dave (INDIA - Tags: BUSINESS ENERGY)

New Delhi: State-run ONGC on Sunday said that the recent oil spill from a crude oil storage tank at its plant in Uran, a coastal town in Maharashtra, has not caused any damage to farmers and fishermen and has described the incident as a "minor" oil spill.

The statement comes after the oil spilled into a stormwater drainage channel.

"There is no damage to either farmers or fishermen due to the minor oil spill near Uran beach recently," said the ONGC statement

The statement noted that on Friday morning, a "minor" quantity of oil leaked from one of the crude oil storage tanks at the ONGC Uran plant and due to heavy rains, the leaked oil entered the stormwater drain channel.

"As the quantity of oil leakage from the plant area was minimal, the leaked oil got trapped between rocks on the beach with only traces reaching the shoreline," it said.

ONGC said that the Oil Spill Response (OSR) team from ONGC was immediately deployed to avoid ingress of oil into the sea and cleaning of the shoreline commenced on war footing.

Noting that due to heavy rains on the day of the incident and the beach being a rocky area, the cleaning took a lot of effort, the company said that due to the ONGC team's timely and tireless efforts, the oil did not enter the sea and no damage to marine life is anticipated.

The company further said that local villagers had taken an "unauthorized water connection" to their fields by breaching the stormwater drain channel wall from the plant for irrigation purposes, due to which a small quantity of oil entered only four-five paddy fields.

"The damage to paddy fields is also very limited. None of the fishermen have suffered any loss due to the small oil spill, as it on the rocky part of the beach," it said, adding that "prompt and proactive" actions by ONGC for cleaning of oil from the beach and drain channels have led to an early restoration, which is now nearing completion.
