Theatres get ready for an action-packed holiday weekend

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Aug 10, 2023
Gadar 2 has generated a lot of interest, with all opening day shows sold out. The film will compete with Akshay Kumar's OMG 2, which has faced some issues with the censor board.

New Delhi: Cinema owners are gearing up to capitalize on the recent theatrical resurgence during the upcoming extended weekend, which coincides with the Independence Day celebrations.

Theatres across north India, especially single screens, have witnessed significant advance bookings for Gadar 2, a sequel to the 2001 hit. Down south, preparations are under way for Rajinikanth's latest film Jailer.

Some theatre owners in the North said viewers' interest in Gadar 2 has been massive, and its patriotic theme has generated a buzz that's on a par with Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan. All the shows for opening day have been sold out, they said.

The Sunny Deol-starrer film will be competing with Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 which has had some issues with the censor board. “The idea is about offering something for everyone. It is a trend we observed with the success of Oppenheimer, Barbie and Mission: Impossible. If the content is good, audiences will have more of it," said Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, executive director, PVR Inox Ltd.

According to Bijli, around 20 films across languages have been screening concurrently across theatres, with a minimal impact on the box office performance of one over another.

Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, cinemas, BookMyShow said so far Jailer has seen around 900,000 bookings on the platform, leading with the original Tamil version in south India including Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The film is also releasing in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

“Gadar 2 witnessed close to 300,000 ticket sales on BookMyShow with fans from Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Jaipur, Patna, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Surat leading. The interest stems from a revival of the star cast in this sequel, rekindling memories of the original film, released over two decades ago. We are especially enthusiastic about the impressive advance bookings of Gadar 2 in single-screen theatres in small towns. It is a remarkable response and the film is set to see its market reach rise significantly beyond the top cities," Saksena added.

Further, Chiranjeevi-starrer Bhola Shankar, and OMG 2 sold 70,000 and 45,000 tickets, respectively, on BookMyShow.

“Usually, Independence Day weeks contribute 25-30% of overall share of business for movies in this month. We have always witnessed a rise in footfall, with families and friends gathering to celebrate the holiday outdoors, and watching films on the big screen," said Saksena.

To be sure, though, theatre owners, especially small-town businesses said advance bookings for Gadar 2 shot through the roof, and may be one of the most impressive opening day success stories in recent days with collections of ₹25 crore- ₹30 crore expected.

“About 98% of our shows for the opening day are sold out and the buzz should spill over to the weekend," said Pranav Garg, the managing director of two-screen cinema, Maya Palace, in Muzaffarnagar.

Producers Zee Studios opened advances for the Sunny Deol-starrer 10 days before the release and theatre owners said unlike the trend of walk-in purchase of tickets, people are planning in advance given the nostalgia around the film. OMG 2, however, may have fewer shows, catering primarily to urban, multiplex audiences.

Pathaan vs Jawan vs Gadar 2: Who's winning the Box Office battle?

Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma, has beaten Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan in a bid to become the highest-grossing Hindi film ever in India. The sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, however, still has to beat another SRK blockbuster - Jawan - to claim the crown.

Gadar 2 has minted ₹524.75 crore in India. Now, if you are wondering how - with that number - the sequel managed to beat Yash Raj Films' Pathaan which earned ₹543.09 crore in the domestic Box Office, here comes the twist.

The entire collection for Gadar 2 came from its Hindi version as that was the only language it had been released in. Pathaan, on the contrary, was released in Tamil and Telugu as well. The movie, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, earned ₹524.53 crore from Hindi shows whereas ₹18.56 crore came from the other two versions.

A-Listers give nod to new films as audiences flock back to cinemas

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Sep 18, 2023
Producers and studio executives point to a renewed sense of momentum in the industry. (HT)

Stars such as Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, who had taken a break following box office setbacks, have started greenlighting new projects in the wake of a slew of successful Bollywood films drawing audiences back to the cinemas.

While announcements are still pending, Salman has reportedly agreed to sign Sooraj Barjatya's next family drama, and an action movie by director Vishnu Vardhan. Aamir Khan has reserved Christmas 2024 for a project yet to be named, while Akshay Kumar notified a sequel to the Welcome film franchise, eight years after the last project.

Producers and studio executives highlighted a renewed sense of momentum in the industry. While remaining cautious, actors and filmmakers are eager to kickstart new projects, following signs of a revival. However, there are concerns over the issue of star fees, with producers exercising caution following months of disruptions.

“With superstars, there is a certain amount of responsibility and financial burden riding on them, so they have to be circumspect about what to sign. Over the last year or two, they have been looking out for the right projects and some kind of momentum is now built on the bumper box office run we've seen in August and September," Shariq Patel, chief business officer, Zee Studios, said.

These successes may not be solely attributed to individual choices, as anything agreed upon today will come to fruition at least 18 months down the road. However, the overall positive sentiment in the market is certainly helping, Patel added.

Film industry experts said that the past year saw the business crumble under the weight of several projects that were greenlit before the pandemic but didn't find takers at the box office. Additionally, there was debate over whether the habit of going to cinemas was disrupted.

“It was a period when there was heavy dependence on ancillary revenues, because the box office wasn't firing. But there is only so much any platform could pay. Now, however, as several sections of the audience have returned, and across markets and languages, filmmakers can be a bit aggressive as other revenue streams don't have to do the heavy-lifting," Patel added.

That said, top stars often take away a significant share of total earnings as backend, that is, if they don't demand an upfront fee, leaving producers with reduced profits.

Even beyond the top names, everyone in the industry has become more active post this recent restoration of theatrical confidence, said Tanuj Garg, partner at Ellipsis Entertainment. “A large number of people are putting projects together though the rate of greenlighting continues to be controlled because the economics have become more important than ever. Nobody wants to be hasty," Garg said.

To be sure, unlike the younger crop of actors, senior stars can command a fan base across demographics, film trade experts say. “The younger lot needs to realise India is a diverse country and that it's important to connect with and cater to all segments through mainstream and not experimental movies," film distributor and exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said. The same has been proven by the recent success of films like Jawan, Pathaan and Gadar 2 that managed to lure small-town audiences to cinemas after long.

A senior film studio executive said on condition of anonymity that the advantage that Hindi film stars continue to have today is that their movies reach out to wider audiences in the country and unlike southern stars who have only begun to benefit from dubbed versions now and are better known in specific native markets, Bollywood faces are more easily recognised. “There is always space for big star films. It's just that the business has taken some time to stabilize post the pandemic. But nobody thought there could be a spate of ₹500 crore hits in a row," the person added.

Single-screen cinemas look at long-term survival amid windfall of hits

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Sep 13, 2023
Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan had crossed the ?300 crore mark within India alone at last count.

New Delhi: Single-screen theatres in India are heaving a sigh of relief with a recent stream of mass market movies keeping the tills ringing. But they are still looking to expand into multiplexes well aware that such strokes of luck don’t last.

Facing challenges even before covid-19 and struggling ever since the pandemic outbreak, single-screen theatres have been able to attract audiences from small towns thanks to films such as Gadar 2 and Jawan, aided by affordable tickets.

However, cinema owners are conscious that such films and favourable conditions are relatively rare. So, many are actively seeking partnerships to transform their establishments into two or three-screen multiplexes in line with the evolving dynamics of the cinema industry.

“It has been a good comeback for us. However, most single-screen owners are looking to remodel their properties. They have five-year plans to either tie up with builders or explore arrangements with national chains," said Satadeep Saha, director of SSR Cinemas Pvt. Ltd, a West Bengal-based company.

To be sure, the opportunity cost of running these cinemas remains high. Theatre owners admit that mass-market content is rare and will not arrive consistently in the Hindi-speaking belt, unlike in the south. That explains why Saha is already remodelling theatres in his state, working with builders and exploring properties in virgin territories to set up multiplexes.

Yet, there is a positive sentiment among single-screen theatre owners after long. Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan had crossed the ₹300 crore mark within India alone at last count. Meanwhile, Gadar 2, released mid-August, has crossed the ₹515 crore mark at last count, while Pathaan had earned ₹543 crore in January.

“Theatre owners are aware this isn't a year-long phenomenon and are looking to tie up with chains or convert (into two or three-screen multiplexes) in order to sustain," said Ashutosh Agarwal, owner of Star World Cinemas in Uttar Pradesh. Filling up an 800- or 1,000-seater cinema is going to be increasingly impossible, Agarwal said, and the only solution is to split the property into 200-300 seaters and play multiple films at the same time.

“While stars like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan turn older, no new or fresh faces are finding the same kind of draw. Plus, music isn't that great nowadays. These are huge worries for the industry," Agarwal said.

That said, single screen owners find it heartening to see film-makers realize the potential of catering to the lowest common denominator among the audience, and the kind of footfall that small-town audiences can bring when films appeal to their sensibilities. Despite reasonable ticket pricing, these small screens have brought in 35-40% of overall revenues in case of mass-market hits such as Gadar 2, according to theatre owners and trade experts.

“By virtue of their ATP (average ticket price), multiplexes aren't meant for the common man, but only a certain privileged and wealthy class. An overwhelming majority of this country can only afford to single screen cinemas and it makes sense for any film-maker to cater to them instead of the hyper niche. The past few months that have flipped the ratio (in favour of small-town theatres) have been an eye opener," independent exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said. Despite pandemic-induced challenges, at least 90-95% of India's single-screen cinemas have upgraded infrastructure including air-conditioning, projectors and seats, Rathi added.

PVR Inox opens second standalone IMAX theatre

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Sep 08, 2023
This launch marks the opening of the fifth IMAX in Delhi and the second standalone IMAX theatre in India.

Multiplex chain PVR Inox has launched its second standalone IMAX theatre in Delhi’s Paras Cinema at Nehru Place. This launch marks the opening of the fifth IMAX in Delhi and the second standalone IMAX theatre in India.

With this opening, the new cinema will take PVR INOX's foothold in New Delhi to a total of 27 cinemas across 108 screens and its presence in North India to a total of 457 screens in 103 properties.

“It is a proud moment for us to finally re-open Paras Cinema right in the heart of south Delhi after a gap of 15 years. This opening also marks the launch of the second standalone IMAX theatre in India, after Priya. We are happy that we were able to play our part in remodeling one of the largest single screen theatres in Delhi into a modern- day truly immersive cinematic experience like IMAX living up to the expectations of today's insightful audience," Ajay Bijli, managing director, PVR Inox said in a statement.

Last month, PVR Inox had opened its first standalone IMAX theatre at Priya Cinema, a popular landmark in New Delhi and one of the first PVR properties in the country. Unlike other IMAX cinemas that are housed along with regular formats, this is the first time that an IMAX theatre is taking over an individual single screen cinema. Tickets to the 316-seater will be priced anywhere between ₹350 and ₹600 depending upon the film, day and show timing. Another such property is slated to come up, in Mumbai's Eros Cinema.

PVR Inox operates 230 premium screens across the country and the investment per screen ranges from ₹3 crore to ₹8 crore.

IMAX offers a 70-mm motion picture film format, and projection system, wherein screen image width is greater than the height of a screen. The American film industry makes at least 20 films per year in the IMAX format. Local Indian films, across languages, too are increasingly taking to the same. Over the past few months, Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan and Ajay Devgn's Bholaa were released in the format.

Dream Girl 2 box office collection: The film, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana in the role of a woman named Pooja now has a 10-day total collection of ₹89.16 crore, inching closer to ₹90 crore mark.

Dream Girl 2 enjoyed a successful first week at the box office but experienced a significant decline on its second Friday. According to early estimates reported by Sacnilk.com, the film collected ₹8.10 crore on Sunday, September 4. While it opened strongly, surpassing ₹10 crore, and received positive reviews, its collection slowed down on its second Friday, with the upcoming release of Jawan just three days away. However, the film regained momentum over the weekend and has a chance to perform until Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan hits theatres on September 7.

Dream Girl 2 is a sequel to the 2019 film Dream Girl, which grossed ₹142 crore at the domestic box office.

“On the face of it, Dream Girl 2 is audacious, unapologetic and entertaining," wrote Monika Rawal Kukreja in the Hindustan Times. “The story is fine and well intended. It makes you laugh out loud, there are some witty one-liners, clever jokes, references to some other films, which sometimes works and falls flat other times."

“Everything from his voice to his walk to the flutter of his eyelids is impeccable," wrote Tushar Joshi on India Today while praising Ayushmann's performance. “On the whole, the overall experience of watching Pooja in her true element getting caught up in some crazy situations is quite fun. The jokes and gags (the Gadar 2 and BTS reference) are witty and some are downright funny."

“At times, as a franchise comedy, Dream Girl 2 surpasses Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in silliness and unoriginality. Most of the gags are stolen from the first film: Annu Kapoor's Muslim travesties, Karam seducing unsuspecting men on the phone," wrote Shilajit Mitra in The Hindu.
