Elon Musk’s X to auction Twitter signs and other items

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Aug 10, 2023
AFP

Just weeks after Twitter’s rebranding as ‘X’, Elon Musk is auctioning signs and other items from the company, according to a report by BBC.com.

“Among the 584 lots on offer are coffee tables, outsized bird cages, and oil paintings of images that went viral," said the report.

Tens of desks and chairs, a DJ booth, and musical instruments, are also listed for auction, said the report.

The minimum auction price for each lot is $25 (£19.70), the report said citing auction house Heritage Global Partners. The bidding will begin on 12 September and scheduled to end two days later.

Since the acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, Musk has cut thousands of jobs to lower the company expenses.

One of the Twitter signs to be auctioned is still fixed on the company's headquarters on 10th Street in San Francisco.

“Bird is still mounted on side of the building. Buyer is responsible for hiring an SF Licensed Company with appropriate Permits," the BBC report said citing listings by X.

In July, an attempt by the company to remove a different Twitter sign was temporarily halted by authorities in San Francisco.

According to the report, the items on auction also include, two oil paintings of photographs that went viral on Twitter. The first is of Ellen Degeneres' star-studded selfie taken at the 2014 Academy Awards. The other is of the image that then-US President Barack Obama tweeted when he was re-elected in November 2012.

The auction will also feature a DJ booth.

Earlier this year also, hundreds of items from Twitter's San Francisco HQ were put on auction. A statue of its famous bird logo attracted the highest bid, selling for $100,000.

In July, the social media platform dropped the blue bird logo from its branding and replaced it with a black and white X.

Payments Will Soon Be Available On X For Users

Posted By: Jaydatt Chaudhary Posted On: Sep 22, 2023

Elon Musk wasn't kidding when he said that X, formerly Twitter will be a whole new platform with new features. The company has already confirmed that audio calls and live videos are coming to X and now we can also tell you that payments will also be available on the micro-blogging platform in the coming months.

The teaser for payments on X was shared by Linda Yaccarino, CEO, of X through a video called Global Town Square which not only shows us a glimpse into the upcoming features on X but also hints at the changing dynamic of a platform which is not just about putting out posts any more and will cater to a lot more.

The video here in this post shows us features like video calls, debating with other people through Spaces, and even paying for the cake your friend got for the group. That's right, soon, payments will be possible on X, and it is likely that X will allow you to integrate bank cards or even UPI ID (in India) with other people on the platform.

She even hinted that X will bring job profiles for users and also give them the option to buy their favourite sneakers through the platform itself. Clearly, Musk and Co. have been planning something big for X and these changes will ensure that nobody even remembers Twitter for what it offered.

Having said that, it is likely that X will bring most of these features under a paid tier in the form of X Blue which comes for Rs 900 per month if you are paying through the mobile X app. Those using the Web X version can get X Blue for Rs 650 per month. However, X also gives you an annual billing option, which brings the total price to Rs 9,400 with some discount.

Recently, Musk has talked about bringing a paywall structure for all the X (formerly Twitter) users. What this basically means is that X could become a paid platform for anyone who wants to use it. Musk's reasons for bringing this drastic change are linked to the massive bot influx on X, which he believes when people are asked to pay for the service will reduce the influence of bots on the platform. He did mention that, unlike the X Premium subscription, the platform will have a lower tier pricing for all the users.

Will Terminate Biden's Open Borders Policy

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Sep 22, 2023

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that if elected again he would shift resources from federal law enforcement agencies and send thousands of overseas-based troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Speaking to supporters in Iowa, where the Republican Party's first nominating contest for the November 2024 election will be held in January, Trump also promised to expand on a travel ban that barred people from several countries with majority Muslim populations during his 2017-2021 presidency.

Calling record illegal U.S.-Mexico border crossings under President Joe Biden an “invasion,” Trump sought to place blame for the problem on the current administration. Biden, a Democrat, is running for re-election and could have a rematch election against the Republican front-runner Trump.

“Upon my inauguration I will immediately terminate every open borders policy of the Biden administration,” Trump said at a rally in Dubuque. “I'll make clear that we must use any and all resources needed to stop the invasion, including moving thousands of troops currently stationed overseas.”

Trump provided few specifics, including on exactly how he planned to expand on any ban imposed on Muslim-majority countries. It was unclear if Trump would face any legal hurdles to implementing such measures.

The Biden administration has defended its border policies, saying it is using the tools available, while calling on Congress to pass laws to fix a broken system. Most people seeking to cross the southern U.S. border come from Central American countries.

The disappearance of China’s defence minister raises big questions

Posted By: Jaydatt Chaudhary Posted On: Sep 21, 2023
Chinese defence minister Li Shangfu (Photo: AFP)

An ability to groom talented officials, China’s leader, Xi Jinping, once said, “largely determines the rise and fall, as well as the survival or demise" of political parties and countries. After a sweeping reshuffle of ministerial posts in March, the government’s main news agency, Xinhua, recalled Mr Xi’s words in an article aimed at showing how meticulous the selection process had been. Since late June, however, two of the most senior officials who were promoted in that shake-up have disappeared: first Qin Gang, the former foreign minister, and more recently General Li Shangfu, the defence minister. The swiftness of their apparent downfalls has been striking. The questions they raise about China’s politics are big.

There is no sign that this is an existential moment for the Communist Party, or Mr Xi's rule. Adulation of Mr Xi continues unabated in state media. He stayed away from the G20 summit in Delhi on September 9th and 10th—an unprecedented absence. But on September 16th and 17th Wang Yi, who succeeded Mr Qin as foreign minister in late July, met America's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, in Malta. According to Bloomberg, they discussed a possible meeting between Mr Xi and President Joe Biden at a gathering of Asia-Pacific leaders scheduled for November in San Francisco. China's military activities appear unaffected, too. On September 17th and 18th about 100 Chinese fighter jets flew round Taiwan, an unusually high number in such a space of time.

But the churn at the highest levels of the state and military apparatus has been unusually fast, even by the standards of Mr Xi's purge-filled tenure. General Li has not been seen in public since August 29th, when he appeared at a China-Africa security forum. He was supposed to attend an annual meeting with Vietnamese defence officials on September 7th and 8th. But that plan was scrapped, with Chinese officials citing the general's health. Unspecified illnesses seem to be a common problem for those in political trouble. Mr Qin was said to have a health problem, too. But according to the Wall Street Journal, senior Chinese officials were told in secret last month that he had “lifestyle issues". They allegedly involved an extramarital affair, resulting in the birth of a child, while Mr Qin was ambassador in Washington before becoming foreign minister.

On official websites, no change has been indicated in General Li's duties. But American and other officials have told Western media that they believe he has been relieved of his duties. Reuters reported that he was suspected of corruption related to the procurement of military equipment, which General Li oversaw from 2017 to 2022. The news agency said that eight senior officials from the procurement department were also being investigated.

There is also speculation that graft is a reason for the replacement in late July (announced in state media) of General Li Yuchao and General Xu Zhongbo. They were the two most senior commanders of the Rocket Force, which controls China's nuclear and conventional missiles. General Li Yuchao had been put in charge only last year. A less high-profile but equally unusual personnel change came to light on September 1st with the dismissal of Major General Cheng Dongfang as president of the People's Liberation Army military court after just eight months in the job. No reason was given. General Cheng had previously served as spokesman of China's military garrison in Hong Kong.

On Chinese social media, censors have stifled most discussion. Only one comment is visible on the post of a user with more than 670,000 followers who hinted at the defence minister's absence. “Aren't you afraid of having your account closed down?" it says. “Don't talk about him." But given Mr Xi's efforts to portray China's political system as a more stable and effective alternative to liberal democracy, the purges have provided rich pickings for his foreign critics. On X (formerly Twitter) America's ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, compared the turnover to Agatha Christie's novel, “And Then There Were None". He later offered another literary analogy: “As Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, ‘Something is rotten in the state of Denmark'."

To be sure, the posts of defence minister and foreign minister are not as critical in China as they often are in other countries. Neither General Li nor Mr Qin are among the 24 members of the Politburo, the apex of political power. But the ministerial jobs involve defending the country's interests abroad. (In China's eyes, Mr Qin's alleged behaviour may have made him a security risk.) And the purges raise questions about Mr Xi's ability to select the right talent and his capacity to scare officials into avoiding corruption.

The moves have targeted people who were clearly Mr Xi's men. Mr Qin's elevation to the rank of foreign minister was unusually rapid, suggesting he may have impressed Mr Xi during a stint as the chief organiser of his foreign trips. He was promoted last year to the party's Central Committee and in March got the additional title of state councillor (a senior role in China's cabinet). Only four others hold that rank, including General Li. The defence minister is also a Central Committee member and one of the six officers who work under Mr Xi in the armed forces' governing body, the Central Military Commission.

Team of no rivals

General Li and Mr Qin were among many people close to Mr Xi who benefited from the reshuffle in March as well as another one last October involving party jobs. The overhaul produced a ruling team more seemingly in lockstep with the paramount leader than any since the era of Mao Zedong. In China, questions will certainly be asked (in whispers) about how stable it is.

But Mr Xi must be used to muttering. His previous purges have affected hundreds of thousands of officials, high and low, including many in the services most vital to maintaining the party's grip on power: the armed forces, the police and the spy apparatus. Many of the fallen have been accused of corruption, but some, too, of political wrongdoing. Last September courts imposed lengthy prison sentences on several security chiefs accused of being corrupt, as well as members of a disloyal cabal. They included a former deputy minister of public security and a former justice minister. In 2015 Zhou Yongkang—a retired head of China's internal security services and former member of the Politburo's Standing Committee—was sentenced to life in prison for bribery and leaking state secrets. Mr Xi accused him and other jailed associates of attempting to “seize power".

If General Li Shangfu is replaced, as observers expect, there could be an upside for America. Last August, in response to a visit to Taiwan by the then speaker of America's House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, China halted regular talks between the two countries' defence establishments. America is keen to restart them, seeing them as useful for discussing ways of preventing unintended clashes. But while working in procurement, General Li was placed under American sanctions in 2018 for buying fighter jets and missiles from Russia. China wants the sanctions to be lifted before talks resume. Removing the man himself may resolve an impasse.

Movie theatres announce National Cinema Day on 13 October

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Sep 21, 2023
Movie theatres announce National Cinema Day on 13 October, tickets to cost ?99

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and cinemas across the country will celebrate October 13 as National Cinema Day, offering movie tickets for ₹99 per admission. The offer will not apply to recliners and premium formats like IMAX or 4DX.

National Cinema Day this year will unfold across more than 4000 participating screens, including chains like PVR Inox, Cinepolis, Miraj, Citypride, Asian, Mukta A2, Movie Time, WAVE, M2K, Delite, and others. The event had seen admissions of 6.5 million when held in September last year, highest ever for a single day while trade experts estimated box office collections for the day to have touched around Rs. 48 crore across films in various languages with tickets priced at Rs. 75.

Mystery thriller Chup: Revenge of the Artist had collected in the range of Rs. 2.75-3 crore on its first day which could have been its opening weekend had it not been for National Cinema Day, according to trade website Box Office India. Meanwhile, superhero flick Brahmastra: Part One- Shiva had earned Rs. 8.50 crore, making for the second highest third Friday of all time for a film in the Hindi language, after SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion though the latter was originally in Telugu and only dubbed in Hindi. The Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starrer had clocked in almost 14 lakh admissions which was just 20-25% less than its first day admissions.

“The one day initiative has seen a massive response from Indian moviegoers, with shows starting as early as 6.00 am due to an unprecedented demand for movie tickets. Audiences of all ages came together and the country's cinema operators reported house-full shows throughout the day, making 23 September the highest attended day of the year," MAI had said in a statement last year.

The MAI is a nationwide group of cinema operators that advocates on behalf of the cinema exhibition sector. It works with regulatory bodies and industry partners nationwide to highlight opportunities, and address various challenges faced by the cinema exhibition sector.

When Thalapathy Vijay Encouraged Atlee To Give His Life To Jawan Published 23 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Sep 21, 2023

Atlee is currently riding high on the success of the Bollywood blockbuster Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara in the lead roles. While the director is well known for his collaborations with South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay, he recently opened up about the actor's reaction to him working with King Khan. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the filmmaker shared that the opportunity to work with SRK was like a dream come true moment for him. Atlee shared that initially, even the Master star couldn't believe him, but later, he encouraged the director to pour his heart and soul into the project.

The filmmaker recalled, “When Shah Rukh sir asked me to make a film with him, it was like a lifetime opportunity for any director. I was very happy, I said yes. Then I went to Vijay sir and told him. He said, ‘Are you serious? He came to you?' I said he did. He said, ‘Give your life to it'.”

“I learnt a lot from Khan sir, by being patient, getting everything right, taking the film to the next level. Shah Rukh sir has taught me to raise the bar. My next film will have even better energy and we'll make something bigger than Jawan,” Atlee added.

Further, the director mentioned that initially, he thought of creating a typical romantic film with SRK. However, the superstar expressed his desire to be a part of a project that fit Atlee's unique style and vision. He wanted to explore something different that he hadn't attempted before. This pushed the filmmaker to create a new concept and storyline that would align with his own creative world.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Siddharth Kannan, the Bigil director spoke about the potential collaboration between, Thalapathy Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan and shared that both actors had expressed genuine interest in working together on a project. Initially, Atlee thought they might be saying this as a birthday gift to him. However, the following day, Vijay confirmed his commitment to the project, while Khan, who was present during this conversation, also shared his eagerness to collaborate and asked if they were serious about making a film together.

Jawan is continuing its remarkable run at the global box office, having recently crossed the milestone of Rs 800 Crore in worldwide earnings. In India, the action-packed drama is rapidly approaching the Rs 700 Crore mark, while its overseas collection has collected Rs 295 Crore.
