Gadar 2 gives single-screen cinemas a much-needed boost
New Delhi: Gadar 2, a sequel to the 2001 hit, has finally brought some cheer to pandemic-hit small, single-screen cinemas in the Hindi-speaking belt with audiences returning in droves.
This is leading industry experts to estimate net opening weekend collections of ₹110-120 crore within India and global gross collections of ₹150 crore for the film.
Gadar 2 has been lapped up in the Hindi heartland including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of central India in a welcome relief to such cinemas at a time of waning popularity of Bollywood films among mass-market viewers with several new releases considered to feature mostly urban, elitist themes.
Recent hits like Oppenheimer and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani too, were mostly targeted at up-market, multiplex audiences.
Gadar 2 clocked opening day collections of more than ₹39 crore, making it the second highest first-day grosser of 2023 after Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan ( ₹55 crore) and the ninth highest opening day grosser of all time among original Bollywood films.
“We're humbled by the response which shows that the film is being celebrated like a festival. And all of this with the Independence Day holiday yet to come," Shariq Patel, chief business officer, Zee Studios, producers of the film said, adding that the movie has met its goal of serving as a community experience. Single screen cinemas have even added shows as early as 1:00 am and 4:30 am to accommodate audiences. The film's release happened just days after the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal approved Sony Pictures Network India's (Culver Max Entertainment) proposed merger with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL).
Set during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, Gadar 2 has been directed by Anil Sharma and sees original actors Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprising their roles.
Bhumika Tewari, senior vice-president, acquisition and revenues (worldwide theatrical and non-theatrical) at ZEEL said the film is being shown in about 4,000 screens across India. However, the number of shows rose from 13,000 to 14,000 over the weekend with reasonable pricing, and in case of single screens, in the range of Rs. 110-120.
Videos of crowds dancing and cheering in theatres in tier-two and tier-three towns have made their way to social media over the past few days. Amid a slew of Bollywood box office failures, the Hindi-speaking heartland has seen a wave of temporary and permanent closures of single-screen cinemas. About 1,500-2,000 theatres had already shut shop during the pandemic.
Several small-town theatres that operate only during the lucrative Diwali weekend have opened up for Gadar 2 and theatres, even in the south, where Rajinikath's Jailer and Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar, are also running, are adding extra shows. Gadar 2, however, remains a north-centric hit with contribution of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh at 26.5% (as compared to 20% in most films), Punjab at 13% (versus 9-10%) and Rajasthan at 7.5% (compared to 4%). Other markets like Bihar too are going into overdrive.
Bihar-based independent exhibitor Vishek Chauhan said while single screen theatres like theirs are expecting the film to do well, the connect with mass-market audiences has exceeded all expectations. While collections close to Rs. 200 crore could come in by Independence Day, the week could end with Rs. 230-240 crore. “Now it has become difficult for people to resist this film. Ours is a derived demand business, so if you give single screens the right product, everything will fall in place," Chauhan said.

Jawan Box Office collection Day 18
Shah Rukh Khan, with Jawan, has proven yet again why he is often termed the "King of the Box Office". The film's commercial performance has been nothing short of staggering, amassing a colossal sum of ₹562.13 crore in India itself thus far.
The movie got off to a thundering start, raking in ₹75 crore on its opening day, which fell on Janmashtami 2023, a Thursday. This set the pace for an extraordinarily lucrative Week 1, with the film grossing a jaw-dropping ₹389.88 crore in its first week alone.

The momentum persisted into the second week, albeit with a slower pace, yet impressive nonetheless. The film garnered an additional ₹136.1 crore during Week 2, clearly showing that the audience's interest hadn't waned.

The performance on Day 18, which was a Sunday, deserves a special mention. Projections indicate the film may have pulled in ₹15.69 crore on that day alone. While Sundays typically see a spike in cinema-goers, these figures are commendable so late into the film's run, indicating its sustained immense popularity and positive word of mouth.
To put this into context, very few films in Bollywood history have managed to sustain such commercial prowess several weeks into their release. The film's impressive financial haul thus far is a testament to its strong story, high production values, and, of course, Shah Rukh Khan's indomitable star power. Atlee's directorial prowess, Anirudh's background score and Vijay Sethupathi's impactful performance have been particularly in the limelight after the movie's release.
However, it's not just the domestic audience that has showered their love on Jawan. The film has also been performing well internationally. As of September 22, the movie's worldwide Box Office collection stands at ₹953.97 crore.

When Thalapathy Vijay Encouraged Atlee To Give His Life To Jawan Published 23 minutes ago
Atlee is currently riding high on the success of the Bollywood blockbuster Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara in the lead roles. While the director is well known for his collaborations with South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay, he recently opened up about the actor's reaction to him working with King Khan. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the filmmaker shared that the opportunity to work with SRK was like a dream come true moment for him. Atlee shared that initially, even the Master star couldn't believe him, but later, he encouraged the director to pour his heart and soul into the project.
The filmmaker recalled, “When Shah Rukh sir asked me to make a film with him, it was like a lifetime opportunity for any director. I was very happy, I said yes. Then I went to Vijay sir and told him. He said, ‘Are you serious? He came to you?' I said he did. He said, ‘Give your life to it'.”
“I learnt a lot from Khan sir, by being patient, getting everything right, taking the film to the next level. Shah Rukh sir has taught me to raise the bar. My next film will have even better energy and we'll make something bigger than Jawan,” Atlee added.
Further, the director mentioned that initially, he thought of creating a typical romantic film with SRK. However, the superstar expressed his desire to be a part of a project that fit Atlee's unique style and vision. He wanted to explore something different that he hadn't attempted before. This pushed the filmmaker to create a new concept and storyline that would align with his own creative world.
Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Siddharth Kannan, the Bigil director spoke about the potential collaboration between, Thalapathy Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan and shared that both actors had expressed genuine interest in working together on a project. Initially, Atlee thought they might be saying this as a birthday gift to him. However, the following day, Vijay confirmed his commitment to the project, while Khan, who was present during this conversation, also shared his eagerness to collaborate and asked if they were serious about making a film together.
Jawan is continuing its remarkable run at the global box office, having recently crossed the milestone of Rs 800 Crore in worldwide earnings. In India, the action-packed drama is rapidly approaching the Rs 700 Crore mark, while its overseas collection has collected Rs 295 Crore.

SRK’s Jawan enters US top 5 in Box Office collection
In an extraordinary development for Indian cinema, Jawan has found its way into the top 5 movies at the US Box Office for releases in September 2023. The film, distributed by Yash Raj Films USA Inc., was released on September 7 and amassed a total gross of $12,108,639 ( ₹100 crore) in the US. Notably, this feat was achieved in just 826 theatres, far fewer than its Hollywood counterparts, as per Box Office Mojo.
September 2023 was a competitive month at the US Box Office, with The Equalizer 3 leading the pack, earning $73,673,848 ( ₹613 crore). It was followed by The Nun II, which garnered $56,327,738 ( ₹469 crore).
Also featured in the list is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 at the fourth spot with $18,632,245 ( ₹155 crore). Barbie and Oppenheimer, released on July 21, are still among the top 10 movies in September.
Breaking into this Hollywood-heavy list, Jawan has claimed the fifth position among September releases. Considering the limited number of theatres in which it was shown, the film's per-theatre earnings are quite impressive. This stands as a strong testament to the film's appeal and the growing influence of Indian movies on international audiences.

Single-screen cinemas look at long-term survival amid windfall of hits
New Delhi: Single-screen theatres in India are heaving a sigh of relief with a recent stream of mass market movies keeping the tills ringing. But they are still looking to expand into multiplexes well aware that such strokes of luck don’t last.
Facing challenges even before covid-19 and struggling ever since the pandemic outbreak, single-screen theatres have been able to attract audiences from small towns thanks to films such as Gadar 2 and Jawan, aided by affordable tickets.
However, cinema owners are conscious that such films and favourable conditions are relatively rare. So, many are actively seeking partnerships to transform their establishments into two or three-screen multiplexes in line with the evolving dynamics of the cinema industry.
“It has been a good comeback for us. However, most single-screen owners are looking to remodel their properties. They have five-year plans to either tie up with builders or explore arrangements with national chains," said Satadeep Saha, director of SSR Cinemas Pvt. Ltd, a West Bengal-based company.
To be sure, the opportunity cost of running these cinemas remains high. Theatre owners admit that mass-market content is rare and will not arrive consistently in the Hindi-speaking belt, unlike in the south. That explains why Saha is already remodelling theatres in his state, working with builders and exploring properties in virgin territories to set up multiplexes.
Yet, there is a positive sentiment among single-screen theatre owners after long. Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan had crossed the ₹300 crore mark within India alone at last count. Meanwhile, Gadar 2, released mid-August, has crossed the ₹515 crore mark at last count, while Pathaan had earned ₹543 crore in January.
“Theatre owners are aware this isn't a year-long phenomenon and are looking to tie up with chains or convert (into two or three-screen multiplexes) in order to sustain," said Ashutosh Agarwal, owner of Star World Cinemas in Uttar Pradesh. Filling up an 800- or 1,000-seater cinema is going to be increasingly impossible, Agarwal said, and the only solution is to split the property into 200-300 seaters and play multiple films at the same time.
“While stars like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan turn older, no new or fresh faces are finding the same kind of draw. Plus, music isn't that great nowadays. These are huge worries for the industry," Agarwal said.
That said, single screen owners find it heartening to see film-makers realize the potential of catering to the lowest common denominator among the audience, and the kind of footfall that small-town audiences can bring when films appeal to their sensibilities. Despite reasonable ticket pricing, these small screens have brought in 35-40% of overall revenues in case of mass-market hits such as Gadar 2, according to theatre owners and trade experts.
“By virtue of their ATP (average ticket price), multiplexes aren't meant for the common man, but only a certain privileged and wealthy class. An overwhelming majority of this country can only afford to single screen cinemas and it makes sense for any film-maker to cater to them instead of the hyper niche. The past few months that have flipped the ratio (in favour of small-town theatres) have been an eye opener," independent exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said. Despite pandemic-induced challenges, at least 90-95% of India's single-screen cinemas have upgraded infrastructure including air-conditioning, projectors and seats, Rathi added.

Jawan Box Office collection Day 5
Jawan Box Office collection Day 5 numbers are in. Shah Rukh Khan’s new movie is proving to be a blockbuster hit. Within just five days of its release, the film has amassed an impressive ₹316.16 crore in India, as per the net collection reports.
The film kicked off with a bang on its first day, earning ₹75 crore. Although the collections experienced a dip on the second day, coming in at ₹53.23 crore, the weekend proved to be extraordinarily successful. The film netted ₹77.83 crore on its third day and peaked at ₹80.1 crore on the first Sunday. Early estimates suggest that the film has pulled in ₹30 crore on its first Monday.
Despite the weekday drop, Jawan shows no signs of slowing down. According to data regarding Jawan Day 6 advance booking, the film has already earned ₹6.19 crore, as per early estimates. A total of 265,522 tickets have been sold for 18,315 shows, indicating a strong and sustained interest in the film.
The numbers offer a telling story of the film's reception and its potential for a long and prosperous run at the box office. The initial five days have set a high benchmark, not just for Jawan but for the industry as a whole. The sixth day's advance bookings seem to reaffirm the film's appeal, and it remains to be seen how the rest of the week unfolds.
