Indian Economy Shining as Beacon of Hope in Challenging Times

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Aug 19, 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Saturday that India's economy is shining as a beacon of hope in these challenging times. ”With robust growth and resilient spirit, the future looks promising. Let us keep this momentum and ensure prosperity for 140 crore Indians,” he said on X, reacting to news portal Moneycontrol's 'Bullish on India' campaign.

The portal, which specialises in reporting on markets and financial sector, had posted on X that the country's economy has not just withstood challenges, but thrived setting the stage for optimism. The 'Bullish on India' campaign showcases India's economic resilience and growth potential in various critical sectors, it said.

It aims to analyse the key drivers of India's economic growth while fostering awareness about the unparalleled potential the nation offers at a time of a global economic slowdown, the portal said in a separate statement. ”With detailed analysis of macroeconomic factors such as manufacturing, demography, economy, markets and India's rising stand in the global leadership, 'Bullish on India' has been presented as a data backed campaign that underlines India's resilient economic growth,” it said.

The campaign seeks to analyse key drivers of India's economic growth while fostering awareness about the ”unparalleled potential” the nation offers at a time of a global economic slowdown, it added. ”There are various adversities that have shaken economies worldwide in the past few years. However, India is standing tall, retaining its stature as the 'world's fastest-growing major economy',” it said, noting that the country is set to become the third largest economy in the coming years.

Cong backed women's reservation bill under pressure

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Sep 25, 2023
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a gathering during the 'Parivartan Sankalp Mahasabha', in Jaipur, Monday (PTI)

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached poll bound Rajasthan on Monday. PM Modi was welcomed by the BJP Mahila Morcha cadre at the venue of a BJP rally, days after Parliament passed the women's reservation bill.

PM Modi reached the meeting venue in Dadiya village in Vatika on the outskirts of Jaipur from a nearby helipad in an open-top vehicle escorted by activists of the BJP's women wing who raised slogans in his support.

Addressing ‘Parivartan Sankalp Mahasabha', PM Modi referred to the Parliament passing the Women's Reservation Bill and said it was done because of the support of people to the BJP exercised through voting.

"The people of Rajasthan have sounded the bugle against the bad governance of Congress. Congress deserves to get zero marks for the way they ran the government here. The people of Rajasthan have decided to remove the Gehlot government and bring back BJP," he said.

The "Parivartan Sankalp Mahasabha" marked the culmination of four 'Parivartan Yatras' that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took out in the poll-bound state. Assembly elections in Rajasthan are due later this year.

Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Rajasthan in the next few months.

The women's reservation bill which seeks to reserve a third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women was passed by Parliament last week.

The Prime Minister reached Jaipur after addressing a rally in Bhopal. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are among five states which will go to the polls later this year.

Before addressing the gathering in Jaipur, PM Modi paid floral tributes to BJP ideologue Deendayal Upadhyay on his birth anniversary.

In 2018 the Congress won 99 seats while the BJP won 73 seats in the 200-member Rajasthan assembly. The Congress led by Ashok Gehlot formed the government with the support of independents and the BSP.

India-Canada row

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Sep 23, 2023
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (AP)

Canada is set to go into elections in the years 2025. While incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seeks to return to governance for a third straight term, his popularity seems to have taken a hit, giving way to Conservative Right wing opposition candidate Pierre Poilievre.

PM Trudeau's handling of the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar seems to indicate a subtle dissociation from a right-wing leader in order to propel his static year-over-year at 31 per cent popularity as best choice for Prime Minister candidate.

The need to move away, rather severe ties with right wing ideologies seems like an opportune moment for an unfazed PM Trudeau.

Notably, Canada houses the second highest Sikh Population in the world, after India. Currently, Canada has a Sikh population of more than 770,000, or about 2% of its total population. Discontent has long simmered between Canada and India over Sikh separatism, a movement that has had a bloody history.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's ally is NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who is a Khalistan sympathiser. According to the recent poll, Singh's popularity has slipped four points since September 2022, with 22 per cent of respondents saying he's the best choice to lead the government.

Currently, the minority Liberals have a supply and confidence agreement with the NDP. That party has agreed to support the government on confidence matters until the next scheduled election in fall 2025.

In exchange, the Liberals agreed to advance key NDP priorities like dentalcare and pharmacare, with legislation expected on the latter by the end of the year.

However, 53 per cent of respondents say it's time for the NDP to stop supporting the Liberals and trigger an election. The remainder believe the NDP should continue supporting the government and not force an election, Global News reported citing the Ipsos poll.

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's polling momentum continues to chug along with 40 per cent of Canadians saying he's the best choice to be prime minister, according to a new Ipsos poll done exclusively for Global News.

While Poilievre's popularity had the potential to be downtrodden as the opposition who only opposes, as opposed to bringing forth a policy proposal of his own, Trudeau's popularity instead took the hit, hinting at the fact that his attempt to distance himself from a right wing leader might have backfired on him.

Regionally, Poilievre's favourables top the list in every province and region except for Quebec. The territories were not included in this poll, Global News reported.

The poll shows Poilievre has pulled ahead as preferred PM in Ontario at 42 per cent, compared to Trudeau's 38%.

Notably, on the ongoing diplomatic stand-off between India and Canada triggered by Justin Trudeau's allegations of India's involvement in the killing of the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Poilievre had stated that the Canadian PM should come out “clean with all the facts".

Further, Trudeau in the initial days of his career as the Prime Minister of Canada maintained an apologetic stance for the followers of Sikh religion. He had in 2016, apologised for the incident of Komagata Maru.

The Komagata Maru incident saw a group of people from British India attempting to immigrate to Canada in April 1914, but most were denied entry and forced to return to Budge Budge, Calcutta (present-day Kolkata).

There, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 22 people.

The passengers on board included 337 Sikhs, 27 Muslims and 12 Hindus, all Punjabis and British subjects. Of these 376 passengers, 24 were admitted to Canada, but the other 352 were not allowed to disembark in Canada, and the ship was forced to leave Canadian waters.

On 18 May, 2016, PM Trudeau issued an apology on behalf of the Canadian government which made international news.

Trudeau, ahead of the 2025 Canadian elections faces several questions and dissatisfied citizen over rising cost of living, access to housing and inflation.

Therefore it certainly, brings into question if an apology, an alliance later, if PM Trudeau will choose to vehemently condemn the Khalistani extremism in his country, or will he maintain his stance to ‘defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest and it is extremely important to us.. at the same time we are always there to prevent violence and to push back against hatred'.

Biden Expressed Concern over Canada’s Claims on Khalistani Terrorist Nijjar’s Death at G20

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Sep 22, 2023

US President Joe Biden and other leaders expressed their concerns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Canada's assumptions and claims about Khalistani separatist-terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder during the September New Delhi G20 Summit, according to reports by Financial Times and India Today.

Separate reports by several media outlets said that the Canadian delegation led by their Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wanted to go public with these claims but his pleas were met with reluctance. Trudeau wanted to go public with the claims shortly after he raised the issue with several members of the Five Eyes, an intelligence-sharing network that includes the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in June.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Justin Trudeau attended the G20 Summit and also met on the sidelines of the summit for a bilateral where the Prime Minister told the Canadian leader of the problems faced by the Indian diaspora and Hindus due to Khalistani actions and highlighted that the separatist movement is connected to drug and human trafficking networks which have the potential of becoming a serious concern for Canada in the future.

Trudeau justified his government's stance by saying that actions of a few do not define Canada but shortly after on September 18, he took a series of steps which has brought Ottawa-New Delhi relationship to a new low over the sheltering of the Khalistani separatist terrorist by the Canadian government.

Canada then claimed that India played a role in the death of the separatist leader. The claims were made in the Canadian House of Commons, the lower house of Canada's bicameral parliament, by Prime Minister Trudeau himself. Canada and India also expelled senior diplomats of each other's nations, indicating a further downgrade in ties.

“Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijar. Last week at the G20, I brought them personally and directly to Prime Minister Modi in no uncertain terms. Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty,” Trudeau claimed while addressing the House of Commons.

India responded by saying that the claims made by the Canadian Prime Minister are “motivated” and “absurd”.

“We are a democratic polity with a strong commitment to rule of law. Such unsubstantiated allegations seek to shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists, who have been provided shelter in Canada and continue to threaten India's sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the ministry of external affairs (MEA) said in a release.

Only A Coincidence

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Sep 22, 2023

Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the “historic achievement” of the passage of the women's reservation bill on his birthday. But, as is common knowledge, the prime minister celebrated his birthday on September 17. The Rajya Sabha chairman, however, informed the House that it is “only a coincidence” that the passage of the bill took place on Prime Minister Modi's birthday “as per Hindu calendar”.

“It is only a coincidence… as per Hindu calendar, today is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday”, Dhankhar said, extending his “heartiest congratulations” to the PM.

The women's reservation bill was unanimously passed by Rajya Sabha on Thursday, a day after the Lok Sabha cleared it with an overwhelming majority. The Bill will now go to the President of India on its way to becoming an Act.

Modi thanked all members and political parties for playing significant role in empowering women and having a detailed discussion on the Bill, which will provide 33 percent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies but whose implementation may take years.

Women's Reservation

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Sep 21, 2023

The Women's Reservation Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday for the first time with an overwhelming majority and will come up before the Raja Sabha on Thursday where it is expected to sail through as well.

But a big demand from the Opposition, led by Sonia Gandhi, has been to implement this reservation immediately, something that would be illegal without a fresh census and improper without a fresh delimitation.

The government has indicated that it will be a reality in 2029. But will the political parties walk the talk and voluntarily allot 33 per cent tickets to women in the upcoming parliamentary elections to show their sincerity to the cause they have been espousing for in Parliament?

This may not ensure that 33 per cent seats in the next Lok Sabha will have women MPs but at least a start will be made by fielding 1/3rd women amongst candidates by each party. In the 2019 Lok Sabha poll data, the irony can be seen. Of 8,048 candidates who contested the 543 Lok Sabha seats, only 726 were women candidates — just 9 per cent. In the most recent Karnataka state elections, of the 2,615 candidates in the fray, only 185 were women (7 per cent). In a 224-member Karnataka assembly now, just 10 are women (less than 5 per cent).

The story is similar in other recent state elections with parties giving few tickets to women. In the biggest state of Uttar Pradesh, which went to polls in 2022, of 4,442 candidates, 559 were women at 12.5 per cent. This slight uptick was due to Congress resolving to give 40 per cent tickets to women candidates though it had to struggle to find as many candidates and most lost. The assembly of 403 MLAs now has just 47 women (12 per cent). The fact remains that parties choose to give tickets in elections as per winnability and women do not get a fair deal.

While opposition parties are now criticising BJP for not enforcing the women's reservation bill in the 2024 general elections, the fact remains that nothing stops them from voluntarily allotting 33 per cent or more of their tickets to women to give them a chance to win and increase the women proportion in the next Lok Sabha from the 15 per cent at present. Same holds good for fielding OBC women candidates as parties led by the Congress are demanding an OBC sub-quota within the women reservation pie. Will political parties walk the talk on it?

Former president Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision and leadership and said the country is “undoubtedly in safe hands” when he is at the helm.

Addressing an event organised to release a book on the prime minister's life and contribution, Kovind described Modi as a man of “extraordinary personality and great soul”.

Modi's persona and remarkable capacity for communication with the masses made him an acceptable leader, he said.

Kovind highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi government and said it is due to his vision and policies that India is a source of pride for the Indian diaspora and inspiration to many countries.

Modi always thinks for the common people, he said.

“With Prime Minister Modi at the helm, we are undoubtedly in safe hands,” he added.

It is an auspicious day, it is Ganesh Chaturthi," he said, addressing a function held in the Central Hall to commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India “My suggestion is that as we are going to the new building, the glory of this building should never decline.
