Naidu Can Never Commit Any Mistake

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Sep 13, 2023

Actor Rajinikanth, who is said to be a close friend of arrested TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, spoke to the leader's son Nara Lokesh and condemned his arrest in connection with the Andhra Pradesh skill development scam case. Naidu is lodged in the Rajahmundry Central Prison as part of his 14-day judicial remand.

According to sources aware of the conversation, Rajinikanth briefly spoke to Nara Lokesh over a phone call and expressed solidarity with the family. “I have known Naidu for decades now, and I know he can never commit any mistake. He has always worked for the welfare of the Telugu people. Those trying to malign his image will never be able to cover up the truth. Naidu will come out clean on the virtue of the noble work he has done for his people,” Rajinikanth told Lokesh.

Rajinikanth also enquired after the health of Naidu's wife Nara Bhuvaneshwari and congratulated Lokesh for putting up a “brave fight”. Earlier this year, the actor was the chief guest at the birth centenary celebrations of TDP founder and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister NT Rama Rao in Vijayawada, where he hailed Naidu as a visionary leader.

He had also credited him for bringing an IT industrial revolution in Hyderabad in the late 1990s, when he was the chief minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Voting begins on 7 seats in 6 states

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Sep 05, 2023
Bypolls 2023: Voting begins for seven bypolls in six states (Photo by Arabinda Mahapatra/ Hindustan Times) (File Image)

In what could be seen as a litmus test for the Opposition bloc –Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance or INDIA against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of crucial state assembly polls later this year and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, polling for by-election to seven assembly seats in six states will be held on Tuesday.

Polling for the bypolls in Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand's Dumri, Dhanpur and Boxanagar in Tripura, Uttarakhand's Bageshwar, Dhupguri in West Bengal and Puthuppally in Kerala will begin at 7am. The counting of votes will be held on September 8.

The opposition alliance comprises 28 parties including the Congress, NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT), TMC, JMM, AAP, DMK, NC, PDP, CPI(M), CPI, RJD, SP and RLD.

Ghosi, Uttar Pradesh

The Ghosi assembly seat became vacant when Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA and prominent OBC leader Dara Singh Chauhan resigned and subsequently joined the BJP. Chauhan is now running for the same seat as part of the NDA alliance, while the Samajwadi Party's Sudhakar Singh, backed by the Congress and Left parties, is also in the fray.

Chauhan had previously served as a minister in the prior BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath. On January 12 of the previous year, he resigned from the cabinet and switched to the SP.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spearheaded the BJP's campaign, while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav held a rally in Ghosi. According to Yadav, the election has the potential to bring about a transformation in the nation's political landscape.

Dhupguri, West Bengal

The Dhupguri assembly constituency in north Bengal is witnessing a three-cornered contest among the Trinamool Congress, BJP and the Congress-supported CPI(M). While the TMC had won the seat in 2016, it was snatched by the BJP in 2021.

Also Read: Bengal bypoll: Dhupguri seat to put INDIA opposition bloc's unity to test

The Dhupguri assembly seat fell vacated after the death of BJP's Bishnu Pada Ray. The BJP is fielding Tapasi Roy against TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy and the CPI(M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy.

Dhanpur and Boxanagar, Tripura

The BJP's campaign in the Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats of Sepahijala district was actively fronted by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. However, the primary opposition parties, Tipra Motha and Congress, chose not to participate. Instead, the Tripura Pradesh Congress encouraged voters to support INDIA alliance candidates in these two constituencies.

Also Read: Tripura bypolls in Dhanpur, Boxanagar seats tomorrow; BJP and CPI(M) in direct contest

It's worth noting that Congress opted to back the CPI(M) after expressing initial discontent with the CPI(M)'s candidate selection process, which excluded their input.

Dhanpur, which was previously a robust stronghold for the communist party, is now poised for a head-to-head contest between Bindu Debnath from the BJP and Kaushik Debnath from the CPI(M).

Puthuppally, Kerala

In the Puthuppally constituency of Kerala, the Congress and the ruling Left parties have chosen to directly compete against each other.

Also Read: Kerala Bypolls: Congress exudes confidence in winning Puthupally seat, following Oommen Chandy's 53-year-stint

The state's opposition party is relying on the sentiment of "anti-incumbency" and the legacy of the late Oommen Chandy.

Dumri, Jharkhand

In the Dumri constituency of Jharkhand, the candidate from the INDIA alliance, Bebi Devi, is competing against Yashoda Devi from the NDA. This seat holds significant prestige for both alliances. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) claims that the INDIA alliance will kickstart its winning streak from Dumri, while the NDA expresses confidence in wresting the seat from the JMM.

Also Read: Jharkhand Bypolls: INDIA bloc and NDA to clash over Dumri assembly seat

The by-election became necessary following the passing of JMM MLA Jagarnath Mahto, a former education minister, in April. Mahto had been representing this constituency since 2004.

Bageshwar, Uttarakhand

In the Bageshwar constituency, there will be a competitive race involving the Samajwadi Party, Congress, and BJP. The by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass.

The BJP has nominated Dass's wife, Parwati, as their candidate, while the Congress is fielding Basant Kumar, and the Samajwadi Party's contender is Bhagawati Prasad.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other prominent BJP leaders actively campaigned for Dass. On the other side, heavyweight Congress figures like Harish Rawat, PCC President Karan Mahara, and State Assembly Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya have been engaged in intensive campaigning in Bageshwar to garner support for their candidate, Basant Kumar.

Varun Gandhi's interaction goes viral

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Aug 30, 2023
BJP MP Varun Gandhi at Parliament House complex (File photo) (Hindustan Times)

A video of a BJP MP from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh went viral when he was addressing the party workers. According to a Hindustan Times report, Livemint's sister publication, a seer was standing near Varun Gandhi, and suddenly Seer's phone rang. Apparently, the seer disconnected the call as Gandhi was speaking. Subsequently, the BJP MP took a pause and asked the seer to take the call. He said, "Maharaj-ji, take the call. What difference will it make? Probably you are getting some important call".

Some party workers pulled the seer away from Varun Gandhi but the MP intervened and said, "Don't do this to him. You never know when Maharaj ji becomes the chief minister. What will happen to us then?"

The video of the incident surfaced online with people interpreting it as a reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is also the Gorakshpeethadheeshwar of Gorakshpeeth. Adityanath is always in a sadhu's dress.

BJP support stable

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Aug 23, 2023
The BJP?s stable support base is shaped by Modi?s popularity. (HT_PRINT)

With the Lok Sabha elections due next year, political parties are afoot carving pre-poll alliances and setting narratives. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retains nearly two-fifths of the popular support in urban India, while the parties in the ambitious Opposition alliance have the combined approval of only 28%, the latest YouGov-Mint-CPR Millennial Survey found. The survey indicated that the BJP was set to keep its dominance with a leadership story centred around Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the lack of consensus on a viable alternative. However, the survey also found that some sections were strikingly less likely to support the BJP ahead of 2024.

1. Stable lead

Since March 2020, the biannual survey has asked its respondents—who largely represent urban India's internet-using demographic—which party they identify with the most. In the latest round held in June 2023, the survey found that support bases hadn't budged much in the six-month period preceding it. The BJP had 39% of the support base, and the Congress was a distant second, with 11% showing support. One in five respondents picked state-level parties, while 24% said they did not identify with any political party.

The latest round had 10,072 respondents across over 200 cities and towns.

Across its 10 rounds since 2018, the survey has tried to examine the aspirations, anxieties and attitudes of India's digital natives. Around 42% of the respondents in the latest round were post-millennials (born after 1996), and 41% were millennials (born between 1981 and 1996). Mint conducts the survey in association with survey partner YouGov India and Delhi-based think-tank Centre for Policy Research.

2. Top PM picks

The BJP's stable—and high—support base is shaped by Modi's popularity. Around 40% of the respondents chose Modi when asked who they would like to see as the next prime minister in 2024. At a distant second spot was Congress leader Rahul Gandhi (15%). Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, stood third with 11% of respondents picking him. The support for Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Nitish Kumar and Amit Shah was in single digits.

Among those who preferred parties that are part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), support for Modi as the next prime minister went up to 67%. However, among the parties that together call themselves Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), the support for Gandhi was just 37%. Even among INDIA coalition supporters, Modi was the second most preferred contender, at par with Kejriwal. Among those who preferred non-aligned parties, Modi still captured 32% of the support, followed by Gandhi (13%).

3. Modi 1.0 vs 2.0

Overall, 41% of the respondents said they identified with a party that was part of the NDA, while only 28% picked parties that are part of the INDIA grouping. Non-aligned parties taken together mustered a mere 8% of the popular support.

Responses to the question of performance by the BJP-led government in the last nine years indicated high approval for the party and the leadership, a possible reason for the stable support base. One-third of the respondents were of the view that both terms of the Modi-led government were equally good, whereas roughly a quarter rated the first term to be better than the current term. Almost one-fifth rated the current term as better than the first. Put together, an overwhelming 77% of the respondents viewed the performance of the government in a positive light. Just 12% respondents felt both terms were equally bad, while the rest (11%) did not respond.

4. Counter to BJP

India continues to be divided on the question of a national alternative to the BJP. Compared to the last survey, the prospect of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a viable alternative has substantially diminished, indicating that the spurt in its popularity after the Punjab win in early 2022 could be fading away. The prospect of a revitalized Congress as a viable counter to the BJP has slightly picked up momentum. Both Congress and AAP are almost on a par with each other on this question. (Note that this doesn't indicate support for the two parties, and is based on a question that was asked to all respondents, including BJP supporters, about who could pose a real Opposition against a strong BJP.)

The coalition of regional parties continued to stand as the least preferred option among respondents with 18% votes. Roughly one-third of the respondents were still unable to pick an alternative to the BJP at the national level.

5. BJP?s thorns

While the BJP continues to dominate the political landscape, the party appears to have less penetration in some demographics. The ruling party's overall support of 39% falls to 30% in the post-millennial generation (those born after 1996). Women (36%) showed less proclivity compared to men (42%). The party has yet to get a strong support base in South India (20%) similar to its traditional ideological strongholds such as north and central India (50%). The preference for the party drastically falls among lower socio-economic groups (29%), and among disadvantaged caste groups (30%). If the BJP wishes to repeat its 2019 performance, it must find ways to win over the support from these sections of the Indian society.

(The authors are associated with CPR, New Delhi.)

Major findings of the survey were released last week ("The population puzzle: What Indians feel", 15 August 2023). More stories, raw data and methodology details available here.)

Rajinikanth Meets UP CM Adityanath

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Aug 19, 2023

In a heartwarming gesture, actor Rajinikanth on Saturday touched Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's feet as he met the chief minister at his residence in Lucknow to watch his recent blockbuster ‘Jailer' with him.

In a video, shared by news agency ANI, the Tamil superstar can be seen greeting UP CM with folded hands as he then gets down to touch his feet. “I will watch the film with the CM. It's God's blessing that the movie is becoming a hit", the superstar had told ANI ahead of his visit to the state capital.

During their meeting, Yogi Adityanath gifted Rajinikanth a book and a small idol of Lord Ganesh to wish him well for his movie.

Superstar Rajinikanth, who is likely to watch his blockbuster new release ‘Jailer' with CM Adityanath later, will visit Ayodhya on Sunday to seek Lord Ram's blessings for the success of his film.

Earlier in the day, a special screening of ‘Jailer' was held in Lucknow, which was attended by Adityanath's deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya.

“I also got a chance to watch the movie ‘Jailer'. I had watched Rajinikanth's many films and he is such a talented actor that even though there is not much content in the movie still with his performance, he increases the importance of the film", PTI quoted Maurya as saying.

Rajinikanth's ‘Jailer,' was released in theatres on August 10 and has been making waves at the box office since then. In India alone, the film's eight-day total collection stood at Rs 235.65 crore.

Earlier in the day, Adityanath offered prayers at Ayodhya's Shri Ram Janmabhoomi and inspected the site where construction work for the grand Ram Temple is underway.
