Gold hallmarking may soon become mandatory in 56 more districts

Gold hallmarking may soon become mandatory in 56 more districts across 17 states, said a report by CNBC-TV18 on Tuesday.

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have approved the proposal and an official notification is expected in the next few days, said the report citing sources.

Currently, the sale of gold across 288 districts is allowed only if the yellow metal is hallmarked.

The 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) mandate for gold artefacts was started from 1 April this year.

The hallmark is used as a guarantee of purity and fineness for gold and silver in India.

In March, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, director general, Bureau of Indian Standards, had said that there is a need for mandatory hallmarking of gold bullion. An advisory group has been formed last month. Gold importers, Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC) Association and jewellers associations are part of this advisory group.

For the hallmarked jewellery lying with consumers as per old schemes, Tiwari had said those shall remain valid. Consumers can sell or exchange their old jewellers as per there convenience.

Gold bullion is used as raw material for manufacturing of jewellery and its purity is paramount, considering the large volume of jewellery hallmarked.

According to the BIS, the hallmark will help in ensuring the purity of gold jewellery.

In March, the consumer affairs ministry had announced that it has been decided that after 31 March 2023, sell, or offer to sell gold jewellery or gold artefacts unless it is hallmarked with of 6-digit HUID number will not be allowed.

Till 16 June 2021, the gold hallmarking was voluntary in nature. Prior to the implementation of the six-digit HUID number, hallmarking of gold jewellery consisted of four marks -- BIS logo, purity of the article as well as the logo of the jeweller and Assaying and Hallmarking Centre.

Has Rahul Gandhi joined psephology

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Sep 25, 2023
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi speaks during The Conclave 2023 (PTI)

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday after the latter's assertions about the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Wayanad MP had insisted that the BJP was in for a surprise in upcoming state and central elections.

“I think he (Rahul Gandhi) joined the psephology business? I don't know about it. There will be no surprise. Indian people are very predictable. Let the surprise be in the moon or the sun, not in India. He (Rahul Gandhi) always underestimates the people of India. Indian people are more stable and more predictable. Surprise business does not happen in politics," Himanta countered.

The BJP leader predicted a resounding win for the BJP in 2024 elections, insisting that results would be ‘better' next year.

“Modiji is at his best now. I think the result will be better in 2024. But let us not join the number game because the mood of the Lok Sabha election has not yet set in," Himanta said.

Gandhi had predicted a Congress victory in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and a probable win in Telangana. He also said there where would be a "very close" contest in Rajasthan with his party likely to emerge victorious. He asserted that the opposition was adapting and working together and that the BJP was "in for a surprise in 2024" general elections.

The senior Congress leader also referred to the row over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri's derogatory remarks against BSP leader Danish Ali in Lok Sabha, alleging that the BJP indulges in such tactics to distract from the demand for a caste census.

Gold, Silver Prices in India Today, September 16: Gold prices in India on Saturday remained on the positive side. In Delhi, the price of 22-carat gold was up by Rs 200 to Rs 54,900 per 10 grams and that of 24-carat was at Rs 59,890 per 10 grams. Silver was flat at Rs 74,000 per kg.

In Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, the prices of 22-carat and 24-carat gold stood at Rs 54,900 and Rs 59,890, respectively. In Chennai, the gold prices stood at Rs 55,200 per 10 grams and Rs 60,220 per 10 grams, respectively.

Among other cities, in Bhopal and Patna, gold prices stood at Rs 54,950 per 10 grams and Rs 59,940 per 10 grams for 22-carat and 24-carats, respectively. In Thiruvananthapuram, 22-carat gold price was at Rs 54,900 and 24-carat at Rs 59,890 per 10 grams.

In futures trading, gold on Friday closed 0.70 per cent higher to Rs 58,999 per 10 grams and silver was also higher 1.67 per cent at Rs 72,165 per kg on the MCX during the trade in the morning.

Here are several factors that can influence the price of gold:

Supply and Demand: The gold price is primarily shaped by the interplay of supply and demand in the market. When demand for gold increases, the price tends to go up. Conversely, a surge in the supply of gold can lead to a decrease in the price.

Global Economic Conditions: Global economic conditions also wield a significant influence on the price of gold. During periods of global economic downturns, investors often turn to gold as a safe haven, causing the price to rise.

Political Instability: Additionally, political instability can impact the price of gold. When there is political turmoil or crisis in a major country, investors may seek to safeguard their assets by investing in gold as a hedge against uncertainty, resulting in a higher gold price.

Moreover, the retail price of gold in India represents the cost at which gold is sold to consumers within the country. This price is affected by various factors, including the global gold price, the value of the Rupee, and the expenses associated with labour and materials used in crafting gold jewellery.

Gold holds great significance in India due to its cultural importance, investment value, and traditional role in weddings and festivals.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. (PTI) (HT_PRINT)

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and urged him to "give away the Gandhi title".

He said that the Gandhi family is the "Sardar of Duplicate" and further alleged that they committed too many scams.

Assam CM said this while addressing the National Executive Meeting of BJP Mahila Morcha in Guwahati."Their first scam started with the title of Gandhi. They did only Parivarvad and worked on breaking the country. I request Rahul Gandhi to give away the Gandhi title," Sarma said.

CM Sarma commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 'Delhi Declaration' ratified at the G20 leaders' summit in Delhi, attributing its success solely to his leadership.

"Kamakhya corridor will come into reality in the next two years. Only because of PM Modi, the Delhi declaration happened amid Ukraine, Russia war. Congress didn't celebrate 25 years, or 50 years of independence of the country. But, Modi ji celebrated 75 years of independence and everyone feels that we are Bharatiya. The great reformer Mahapurusha Sankaradeva wrote about Bharat Bhumi 500 years ago, this is our Bharat Bhumi," Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

"Yesterday when I saw Modi ji talking with global leaders I felt that Bharat has now become Viswaguru. Women are now leading the country. PM Modi gives more focus on Nari Shakti, women empowerment. A few days ago we launched an operation against Child Marriage. Getting married at 9 years and giving birth at 12 years is common in a particular community in Assam. No Hindu endorse casteism, but one Tamil Nadu minister talked against Hindus," the Assam Chief Minister said.

He also announced that the state government intends to initiate a substantial campaign against child marriage within the upcoming 10 days.

"Mahila Morcha should launch a campaign against child marriage and polygamy across the country. We will bring act against polygamy in December. The nation now again needs Modi ji. We will have to make Modi ji PM for 10 years. Modi government will be formed in Bharat," CM Sarma said.

The CM also highlighted that the Northeast has changed in terms of development transformation.

"We are trying to make the 40 lakh as Individual entrepreneur. ₹10,000 will be provided to their bank account, next year and ₹15,000 from government and ₹15,000 from bank in next and it will be gone upto ₹1 lakh. First year we will give 100 percent subsidy to 40 lakh women," Assam CM said.

Himanta Biswa Sarma cites Indira Gandhi

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Sep 06, 2023
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addresses a press conference, in Guwahati, Wednesday, (PTI)

Assam Chief Minister and turncoat Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said ‘India and Bharat is not a debatable thing’, speaking on the controversy that has taken India's political square by a storm.

During a press conference, the Assam CM said, "On Bharat name row, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says, "India and Bharat is not a debatable thing...India and Bharat are interchangeable that is the decision of the Supreme Court in 2016...Be it Manmohan Singh or Indira Gandhi everyone took oath as 'Main Bharat ka Pradhan Mantri' not as Prime Minister of India...While Deve Gowda took oath as Prime Minister of India...So this is not a debate..."

"A few days back, Amit Shah ji in Parliament placed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Then nobody opposed. Bharat and India are interchangeable and that is the decision of the Supreme Court in 2016," Himanta added.

In the press conference, Sarma pressed to rename Reserve Bank of India as Reserve Bank of Bharat. “The name of the central bank should be ‘Reserve Bank of Bharat'. This is a phase of renaissance. Assam has changed several old legacies and many changes have been made in the Centre also," Sarma said.
