UBS winds down Credit Suisse global markets business

Credit Suisse said it will reduce the volume of new markets business from Sept. 22 while UBS integrates its former rival, the bank said in a letter sent to clients, as the 166-year-old firm winds down trading in global securities.

Increases in positions, or maturity extensions, will now not be possible for clients at Credit Suisse, which trades a wide variety of assets from stocks to currencies. Existing positions will continue to be serviced.

"Going forward, UBS shall focus on consolidating new client activity through UBS legal entities," the letter seen by Reuters on Wednesday said.

The move is a further step along UBS's tricky path to absorbing its fallen rival in the first-ever merger of two global systematically important banks.

UBS will report its second-quarter earnings on Thursday, its first results since taking over Credit Suisse earlier this year.

Twitter Is Now X

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Sep 16, 2023
Twitter Is Now X? Why Not the Elon Enterprise?

It’s been a few weeks since Elon Musk changed the name of his social-media platform from Twitter to X, and the reviews so far have been cool. Many users are finding ways to keep the brand’s iconic blue bird on their devices. For legions of holdouts, Twitter will always be Twitter.

The backlash isn't surprising. “X" invites thoughts of high-school algebra, a subject often more endured than enjoyed. Mark Zuckerberg's rebranding of Facebook isn't faring much better. He rechristened the platform's parent company as Meta, which sounds like the grimly experimental title of a Soho art exhibit. And while Substack, another popular social-media company, might have some good content, is anyone going to feel excited about a name that conjures images of a factory skyline?

Whatever their other gifts, the titans behind today's leading social-media companies obviously lack a lyrical ear, something that an older generation of media pioneers seemed to have in abundance. Just think of the many newspaper names that emerged in the golden age of print, and you'll see my point.

No one had to guess the meaning behind the Ponchatoula Enterprise, the Louisiana weekly where I cut my teeth as a reporter. That modest word, “enterprise," signaled small-town commerce as a governing ideal. The Baton Rouge Advocate, my hometown daily, has a nice ring, too—“advocate" as in “we're on your side."

I've always loved the name of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, which makes me feel smarter just saying it. Any journal called “intelligencer" seems destined to keep you in the know. The moniker of the Chicago Tribune stirs me, too, and why wouldn't it? One definition of “tribune" is “an unofficial defender of the rights of the individual."

Le Monde, the venerable Paris daily, seems typically French in its audacity, the newspaper's title promising to give readers “the world." And of course there is the quietly insistent reference to Wall Street in The Wall Street Journal, which usefully grounds a paper of global reach in a specific place. Exactly where would you imagine is Meta?

I know that newspapers are considered old-fashioned, but modern media moguls could learn a thing or two about branding from the legacy media.

I'm glad that I walked through the door of the Ponchatoula Enterprise four decades ago and asked for a job. I doubt that I would have signed up for a gig with an outfit named X.

Mr. Heitman is a columnist for the Baton Rouge Advocate.

UBS's Credit Suisse takeover

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Sep 13, 2023
UBS faces lawsuit over its takeover of Credit Suisse, as hundreds of individual shareholders plan to file a claim in Zurich?s commercial court. (REUTERS)

Did banking giant UBS make "the deal of the century" when it bought one of the world's biggest banks for a pittance as it teetered on the edge of the abyss?

Switzerland's largest bank was in March strong-armed by Swiss authorities into a $3.25-billion takeover of Credit Suisse, to keep its closest domestic rival from going under.

At the time, investors gasped at the risks UBS was taking on with the purchase.

But by August, the bank said it would not need the billions in support offered by the Swiss government and central bank to offset any surprises that might pop up in its stricken rival's accounts.

That must mean that Credit Suisse's situation was "much better than described in March", Thomas Aeschi, a member of parliament with the populist rightwing Swiss People's Party (SVP), wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

UBS seemed to prove him right when it unveiled its second quarter results on August 31.

The bank posted a towering net profit of $29.2 billion for the three-month period, thanks to an exceptional gain due to the gulf between the amount paid for Credit Suisse and its book value.

- 'Godsend' -

"UBS has pulled off the deal of the century," Switzerland's Socialist Party said, maintaining the "rescue" was more of a "godsend", allowing it to snatch up a bank at a dramatically reduced rate.

"If we had chosen another path, (like) a temporary or partial nationalisation," said Samuel Bendahan, a Socialist MP and economics professor at the University of Lausanne, the Swiss state "would have taken on the risk, but those $29 billion would have gone to the population".

Instead, the takeover has created "a monopolistic situation", he told AFP, warning that while this might strengthen UBS, it puts Switzerland in an extremely risky position if the new mega-bank were to one day face a crisis.

Politicians are not the only ones taking issue with the takeover.

Gisele Vlietstra, founder of the Swiss Investor Protection Association, told public broadcaster RTS that UBS's towering quarterly profit confirms that the "intrinsic value" of Credit Suisse was "far higher" than the purchase price.

She said she hoped that the lawsuits brought by her association and others on behalf of thousands of Credit Suisse shareholders will help determine "the correct value" that they should be compensated.

'Nickel and dime'

"UBS paid a nickel and dime" and "got rid of its main competitor" in one fell swoop, Carlo Lombardini, a lawyer and banking law professor at Lausanne University, told AFP.

The coming restructuring will clearly carry risks, "but having paid just three billion, it can't go wrong", he said, slamming the option chosen by the Swiss authorities.

Like UBS, Credit Suisse was listed among 30 international banks deemed too big to fail because of their importance in the global banking architecture.

But the collapse of three US regional lenders in March left the firm looking like the next weakest link in the chain.

The Swiss government feared Credit Suisse would have quickly defaulted and triggered a global crisis, shredding Switzerland's reputation for sound banking.

But its chosen option for dealing with the issue was certainly a boon to UBS, which will now swell to manage $5 trillion of invested assets.

Confidence 'evaporated'

UBS chief Sergio Ermotti acknowledged in a recent interview with the SonntagsZeitung weekly that the bank had been "worried" about its competitor since 2016, and had among other things looked into the possibilities of buying it, for fear a foreign lender might snap it up.

He acknowledged that Credit Suisse may have survived for a time if the central bank had injected more cash, "but it would not have been enough, since confidence had evaporated".

Since the takeover announcement in March, UBS has seen its share price soar 31 percent.

But the bank still faces significant challenges, Vontobel analyst Andreas Venditti told AFP.

The $29 billion "is a huge one-off gain, but this is just accounting", he said, stressing that "the losses and costs will come later".

The analyst, who a few months ago wondered in a note whether UBS had secured "the deal of the decade or a decade of headaches", stressed that "it's going to be a huge task".

He said it would only become clear "whether it was worth it" after most of the restructuring is done three years down the line.

Parts of the business are continuing to "produce huge losses", he said, warning "many things can still go wrong".

Swissquote analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya agreed, recalling that "UBS was forced" into the merger.

Now it is up to the bank to "transform an 'obligation' to its advantage".

Jio adds 22 lakh mobile users in June

Telecom subscriber base in the country grew marginally to 1,173.89 million at the end of June on account of new customer additions led by Reliance Jio, sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Thursday, August 22. The subscriber base growth was driven by mobile telephony where Reliance Jio added over 2.27 million new customers and Bharti Airtel added 1.4 million customers, according to the data.

"The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,172.57 million at the end of May-23 to 1,173.89 million at the end of June-23, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.11 per cent," the TRAI said in its monthly subscriber report.

However, the overall growth was mitigated by the loss of subscribers by state-owned BSNL, MTNL and Vodafone Idea (VIL). BSNL lost 1.87 million mobile subscribers, VIL lost 1.28 million subscribers and MTNL (1,52,912 subscribers), according to the data.

The net addition in wireless subscribers of telecom operators in the month of June was 3,73,602. “Total wireless subscribers increased from 1,143.21 million at the end of May-23, to 1,143.58 million at the end of June-23, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.03 per cent," said TRAI.

Overall, Reliance Jio led the race with an active subscriber addition of 4.5 million in May. This was followed by Bharti Airtel Ltd which added 2.2 million subscribers.

However, Vodafone Idea lost 2.3 million subscribers. As a result, Vodafone Idea's active subscriber market share fell by 31 basis points (bps) sequentially to 21.6 per cent, while Jio and Airtel gained market share by 30bps and 8bps, respectively. One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point.

After a marginal decline in May, wireline connections has increased in June.

The growth in the wireline segment was led by APFPL which added 6,56,424 new connections. It was followed by Reliance Jio with the addition of 2,08,014 connections, Bharti Airtel (1,34,021), V-Con Mobile and Infra (13,100), Tata Teleservices (12,617) and Quadrant added 6,540 connections in June, according to news agency PTI.

The total broadband subscribers increased to 861.47 million at the end of June 2023 from 856.81 million at the end of May with a monthly growth rate of 0.54 per cent, the report said.

"Top five service providers constituted 98.37 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of June-23. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd 447.75 million, Bharti Airtel 248.06 million, Vodafone Idea 124.90 million, BSNL 24.59 million and Atria Convergence 2.16 million," the report said.

Vodafone Idea eyes external equity funding by year-end

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Aug 17, 2023
Vodafone Idea's consolidated net loss widened to ?7,840 crore in the April-June quarter of FY2023-24

Debt-ridden Vodafone Idea may reportedly close its external equity funding by the end of this year. Akshaya Moondra, the chief executive of the cash-strapped telecom during the earning call said the talks for equity funding have picked up momentum and he anticipated that they may see a positive outcome in the coming quarters.

The funding is crucial for the telco as it has not posted any profit since the 2018 merger (Vodafone India and Idea Cellular). The company has constantly been losing its subscribers to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Through this funding, Vi will be able to raise debt from a consortium of banks.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the telco received funding assurance of up to ₹2,000 crore from a promoter group entity, Vodafone Idea informed about this development in a regulatory filing.

"The company has received a communication from a promoter group entity confirming that in the event of any fund requirement for meeting its impending payment obligations by the company, it shall provide direct or indirect financial support to the extent of ₹2,000 crore," Vodafone Idea said in the filing.

Moondra said that one of the promoters has given assurance of ₹2,000 crore for payments. Still, there is a need to get external funding.

Vodafone Idea's consolidated net loss widened to ₹7,840 crore in the April-June quarter of FY2023-24.

The consolidated revenue from operations during the reported quarter increased marginally by 2.3% to ₹10,655.5 crore from ₹10,406.8 crore in June 2022 quarter.

The total gross debt (excluding lease liabilities and including interest accrued but not due) as of June 30, 2023, stood at ₹2,11,760 crore.

Debt from banks and financial institutions stood at ₹9,500 crore, and money raised through debt instruments stood at 1,660 crore.

The total subscriber base of VIL declined to 22.14 crore at the end of June 2023 from 24 crore a year ago.

Moondra said that to arrest the complete decline in customer base, the company needs to expand 4G coverage and invest in 5G technology.

The company has had an accumulation of vendor payments, which it expects to start unwinding from the next quarter, he added.

"Once we are through with this quarter and we are able to manage our payments through the support of promoters and non-operational cash inflows that we are looking at, we will then be able to manage and kind of start unwinding vendor dues from next quarter," Moondra said.

He pointed out that the current level of mobile service rates needs to go up for customers using higher levels of data.

"Today, we are equalising the price for somebody who is using 5-6 GB to 28 GB per month now that is where we believe it is not the correct structure," Moondra said.

VIL's average revenue per user (ARPU)-- a key growth matrix of telecom operators, increased to ₹139 during the June quarter from ₹128 a year ago.

Moondra said the ARPU range has compressed from zero to ₹2,000 to ₹150 with GST, and everyone is able to meet their requirement with plans costing ₹500-600.

"Now, the requirement is pay as you use more should apply. At the upper end for higher usage, the ARPU needs to go up. This will happen for sure as we start rationalising the tariff," Moondra said.
