Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’ clocks ₹65 cr on day 1
New Delhi: Actor Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan has set the record for the highest opening day of all time for an original Hindi movie, clocking ₹65 crore on Thursday. The Atlee-directed film has beaten the record set by Khan’s own Pathaan which had mopped up ₹55 crore when released this January.
The dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions of the film also brought in another ₹8 crore, making for an all-India total collection of ₹71 crore.
“Jawan is off to a roaring start, clocking a mammoth 2.5 million (2,50,000) tickets sold so far, highlighting the unprecedented excitement around the film. At 1.6 million, the film's advance sales are the highest ever for a Shah Rukh Khan film, setting the stage for a blockbuster run," Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, cinemas, BookMyShow had said in a statement on Thursday.
Saksensa said sales have picked up across the length and breadth of the country for all languages, growing multi-fold for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film, although the Hindi version is naturally taking the lead.
“What is interesting to note is that the Hindi language version of the film has specifically seen tremendous interest from markets across South and East India such as Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai even as other metros and non-metros across the country including Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Pune, Coimbatore and Bhubaneswar are propelling the pace for advance sales. Barring Shah Rukh Khan as the leading actor, the entire realm of the film, including the cast, director, storyline, cinematography, music and overall treatment, bears a strong imprint of South Indian influence. Given this context, it's truly heartening to observe that Hindi has been embraced as the preferred language, driven by its mass appeal and popularity," Saksena added.
The popularity of the film also starring Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, is expected to aid the revival of small-town, single-screen cinemas that have shown signs of recovery thanks to Gadar 2 according to trade experts.
“While the movie is expectedly raking in numbers at multiplexes, it has garnered spectacular interest from audiences opting to watch the mass entertainer at a single-screen theatre across the length and breadth of the country. Ticket sales for Jawan at single screen theatres alone has contributed a significant 36% of sales on BookMyShow so far," Saksena pointed out.
The film has released at a time when the industry is seeing its glorious days with people going out to cinemas in huge numbers, said Gautam Dutta, co-CEO, PVR INOX Ltd.
“The love and response of audiences on the first day of the release of Jawan is overwhelming and sensational, and proves the significance and might of mass entertainers in the film industry. The Janmashtami holiday provided an additional thrust across the country. The action-packed spectacle has a truly national appeal with popular stars from the South, including Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, along with an eclectic ensemble of stars, which is making the movie cater to a larger market with its Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. With the movie also being screened in special formats like IMAX, 4DX and ICE, audiences are enjoying the larger-than-life storytelling in a more experiential manner," Dutta said.

Jawan Box Office collection Day 18
Shah Rukh Khan, with Jawan, has proven yet again why he is often termed the "King of the Box Office". The film's commercial performance has been nothing short of staggering, amassing a colossal sum of ₹562.13 crore in India itself thus far.
The movie got off to a thundering start, raking in ₹75 crore on its opening day, which fell on Janmashtami 2023, a Thursday. This set the pace for an extraordinarily lucrative Week 1, with the film grossing a jaw-dropping ₹389.88 crore in its first week alone.

The momentum persisted into the second week, albeit with a slower pace, yet impressive nonetheless. The film garnered an additional ₹136.1 crore during Week 2, clearly showing that the audience's interest hadn't waned.

The performance on Day 18, which was a Sunday, deserves a special mention. Projections indicate the film may have pulled in ₹15.69 crore on that day alone. While Sundays typically see a spike in cinema-goers, these figures are commendable so late into the film's run, indicating its sustained immense popularity and positive word of mouth.
To put this into context, very few films in Bollywood history have managed to sustain such commercial prowess several weeks into their release. The film's impressive financial haul thus far is a testament to its strong story, high production values, and, of course, Shah Rukh Khan's indomitable star power. Atlee's directorial prowess, Anirudh's background score and Vijay Sethupathi's impactful performance have been particularly in the limelight after the movie's release.
However, it's not just the domestic audience that has showered their love on Jawan. The film has also been performing well internationally. As of September 22, the movie's worldwide Box Office collection stands at ₹953.97 crore.

When Thalapathy Vijay Encouraged Atlee To Give His Life To Jawan Published 23 minutes ago
Atlee is currently riding high on the success of the Bollywood blockbuster Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara in the lead roles. While the director is well known for his collaborations with South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay, he recently opened up about the actor's reaction to him working with King Khan. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the filmmaker shared that the opportunity to work with SRK was like a dream come true moment for him. Atlee shared that initially, even the Master star couldn't believe him, but later, he encouraged the director to pour his heart and soul into the project.
The filmmaker recalled, “When Shah Rukh sir asked me to make a film with him, it was like a lifetime opportunity for any director. I was very happy, I said yes. Then I went to Vijay sir and told him. He said, ‘Are you serious? He came to you?' I said he did. He said, ‘Give your life to it'.”
“I learnt a lot from Khan sir, by being patient, getting everything right, taking the film to the next level. Shah Rukh sir has taught me to raise the bar. My next film will have even better energy and we'll make something bigger than Jawan,” Atlee added.
Further, the director mentioned that initially, he thought of creating a typical romantic film with SRK. However, the superstar expressed his desire to be a part of a project that fit Atlee's unique style and vision. He wanted to explore something different that he hadn't attempted before. This pushed the filmmaker to create a new concept and storyline that would align with his own creative world.
Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Siddharth Kannan, the Bigil director spoke about the potential collaboration between, Thalapathy Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan and shared that both actors had expressed genuine interest in working together on a project. Initially, Atlee thought they might be saying this as a birthday gift to him. However, the following day, Vijay confirmed his commitment to the project, while Khan, who was present during this conversation, also shared his eagerness to collaborate and asked if they were serious about making a film together.
Jawan is continuing its remarkable run at the global box office, having recently crossed the milestone of Rs 800 Crore in worldwide earnings. In India, the action-packed drama is rapidly approaching the Rs 700 Crore mark, while its overseas collection has collected Rs 295 Crore.

SRK’s Jawan enters US top 5 in Box Office collection
In an extraordinary development for Indian cinema, Jawan has found its way into the top 5 movies at the US Box Office for releases in September 2023. The film, distributed by Yash Raj Films USA Inc., was released on September 7 and amassed a total gross of $12,108,639 ( ₹100 crore) in the US. Notably, this feat was achieved in just 826 theatres, far fewer than its Hollywood counterparts, as per Box Office Mojo.
September 2023 was a competitive month at the US Box Office, with The Equalizer 3 leading the pack, earning $73,673,848 ( ₹613 crore). It was followed by The Nun II, which garnered $56,327,738 ( ₹469 crore).
Also featured in the list is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 at the fourth spot with $18,632,245 ( ₹155 crore). Barbie and Oppenheimer, released on July 21, are still among the top 10 movies in September.
