At Least 9 Dead in Turkish Strikes on Northeast Syria

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Oct 05, 2023

Turkish strikes Thursday on military and infrastructure targets in Kurdish-held northeastern Syria killed at least nine people, Kurdish security forces said, after Ankara had threatened raids in retaliation for a bomb attack.

While Turkey regularly carries out drone attacks in Syrian Kurds' semi-autonomous region, Ankara on Wednesday warned of more intense cross-border air raids, after concluding that militants who staged a weekend attack in the Turkish capital came from Syria.

Thursday's strikes on Hasakeh province “killed six members of the internal security” forces, a statement from the Kurdish force's media centre said.

Earlier, Farhad Shami, spokesman for the Kurdish-led, US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Kurds' de facto army, had said the strike killed six workers at a brick factory.

He said another worker at a separate site in the province was also killed.

The statement from the Kurdish internal security forces also said “two civilians” were killed in a strike on a motorcycle.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group with a network of sources on the ground, had reported earlier that a strike in the Hasakeh area hit a car, killing two people.

The US-backed SDF led the battle that dislodged Islamic State group fighters from their last scraps of Syrian territory in 2019.

Turkey views the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) that dominate the SDF as an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is listed as a terror group by Turkey and its Western allies.

Since Sunday, Turkey has launched strikes on PKK positions in northern Iraq, after two security officers were wounded in the Ankara attack, which was claimed by the PKK.

? ?Clear escalation? ?

“There has been a clear escalation since the Turkish threats,” Shami said, reporting intensive overflights of Kurdish-held areas of northeast Syria.

He said the strikes had targeted military and civilian sites including oil infrastructure.

AFP correspondents saw black smoke rising from oil sites near Qahtaniyeh, close to the Turkish border.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had alleged the perpetrators of Sunday' attack outside the interior ministry in Ankara had been trained in Syria and warned of reprisals against Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria.

“It has become clear that the two terrorists came from Syria and were trained there,” Fidan said in televised comments.

“From now on, all infrastructure, large facilities and energy facilities belonging to (armed Kurdish groups) in Iraq and Syria are legitimate targets for our security forces,” he added.

“I recommend that third parties stay away from these facilities.”

In the market of the city of Qamishli in Hasakeh province, vendors were anxiously following the escalation on their mobile phones and televisions.

Hassan al-Ahmad, a 35-year-old fabric merchant, said there were fewer people out than usual.

“The situation is worsening every day. Turkey doesn't let us breathe,” he said.

“We just want our children to live in peace,” he added.

? ?Take a stand? ?

The Kurdish administration called on “the international community, the international coalition” and Russia to “take a stand capable of dissuading” Turkey from its attacks.

The United States, Russia and Turkey all have troops in areas of the war-torn country.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi denied Wednesday that the Ankara assailants had “passed through our region”.

“Turkey is looking for pretexts to legitimise its ongoing attacks on our region and to launch a new military aggression,” he said.

“The threat to target the region's infrastructure, economic resources and populated cities is a war crime,” he added.

Between 2016 and 2019, Turkey carried out three major operations in northern Syria against Kurdish forces.

Kurdish forces led the anti-IS offensive and are still supported by the United States.

State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said the United States “remains concerned about the military escalation in northern Syria”.

“In particular, we're concerned about the impact on civilian populations and the effectiveness that it could place on the efforts that have been ongoing to defeat” IS, he added.

It'd be madness

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 30, 2023
(File) Andre Russell of Kolkata Knight Riders plays a shot during the match between the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

West Indies all-rounder and Kolkata Knight Riders' key player Andre Russell on 30 November suggested the Indian selectors include Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad for next year's T20 World Cup, reported Hindustan Times.

To clarify his point, he said it would be utter "madness" if India picked a squad minus the duo.

Following the ICC Men's World Cup 2023, where India lost to Australia in the final, there is still no clarity on Rohit and Kohli's positions in India's T20I side.

He even stated that though the young Indian players will give Kohli and Rohit a good fight, there are few better options than them when it comes to crunch situations.

ALSO READ: Virat Kohli takes 'indefinite' break from ODIs, T20Is; tells this to BCCI...

"I don't know why this is a big thing (the debate on Rohit and Virat). Social media can get in the way of cricketers by questioning their potential. Rohit with the experience and Virat being Virat, it would be madness if India pick a team for the (T20) World Cup and they are not in them. Experience in World Cups is very important. You can't send 11 young soldiers to the battlefield. You have to have experience. The young Indian players will give them a run for their money. They have been good in the chances that they have got but I think when the pressure moments come, you need big players," Russell told Hindustan Times in an exclusive interview.

Before the T20 World Cup, India had only eight T20Is. It is most likely that India's T20Is skipper Hardik Pandya, won't play in any of those because of an ankle injury.

?Rohit, Kohli in the bracket of Sachin Tendulkar?:

Without mincing his words, Russel even compared Rohit and Kohli in the bracket of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and added that they are key players if India wants to win another World Cup.

"Rohit is a big game player. Kohli loves the big stage. When a player enjoys being in such a situation, he is not nervous or tentative. I hope the board doesn't listen to the media and decide. I would definitely give them this World Cup. Don't treat big players like that. They have done so much for Indian cricket. They are right in that bracket of Sachin Tendulkar. So, it will be unfair to them. It will be madness if they are not picked," he said.

Gaikwad is being under-used

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Nov 30, 2023

Currently leading the five-match T20I series against Australia by 2-1, Team India's spirit is high. Despite a loss in the previous match, the young squad under Suryakumar Yadav's captainship have shown their mettle and placed their bet for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup, to be held from 5 June.

In the previous match against Australia, India put a massive score of 222/3 while batting first in Guwahati, all thanks to a superb innings by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who smashed an unbeaten 123 off just 57 balls.

However, Glenn Maxwell's brilliant 104* ensured Australia chased down the target on the last ball of the match.

ALSO READ: India vs Australia, 3rd T20: Glenn Maxwell's magical ton helps Australia to win by 5 wickets against India

Not only in the third T20 but in the second T20I as well, he scored 58 off 43 deliveries. Gaikwad has gained stature with consistent performances in the domestic circuit and in the Indian Premier League with Chennai Super Kings.

For his performances, even his former teammate from the franchise has backed him for a major leadership role.

According to Ambati Rayudu, who had recently announced his retirement from IPL, Gaikwad is being 'under-used' by Indian cricket at the moment, adding the latter has the qualities to lead the national team as well.

“For me, (someone) who is being underused by Indian cricket right now is Ruturaj. He has tremendous talent and I think he is the one guy who should be used more," Hindustan Times quoted Rayudu as saying on the TRS Podcast.

"His greatness is his talent. His timing on the ball, his shots, his fitness, his temperament. He has everything to become a world-class cricketer. He is very, very calm. And he knows what he's doing. He has a silent aggression in him. I think it'll be a great asset for India. Yeah, too early to say.

“Yeah, hopefully you know after Dhoni bhai retires, he will start leading CSK and then on, I don't know… he might go on to lead India too. He has already led India at the Asian Games," said Rayudu.

Earlier in the previous month, India secured a gold medal at the Asian Games in the T20 format under Gaikwad's leadership.

Will Suryakumar Yadav captain Team India in South Africa

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Nov 30, 2023
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 26 (ANI): India's skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh celebrate after winning the 2nd T20I match against Australia by 44 runs at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. (ANI Photo) (BCCI Twitter)

The focus turns to Suryakumar Yadav's potential captaincy role in the upcoming T20I series in South Africa. The shift in leadership dynamics comes in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s tenure as captain, which saw India reach significant milestones but fall short in ICC events.

Rohit took over the captaincy with high expectations. He led India to the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the final of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup final clash. Despite these achievements, India's trophyless run in ICC events continued, with a recent loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: India will be serious challenger for title, says Ravi Shastri

Suryakumar Yadav has been handed the leadership role for the T20I series against Australia. India secured two victories in the first three games. With regular T20I skipper Hardik Pandya sidelined due to injury and key players like Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah rested, Suryakumar's captaincy is under the spotlight.

Potential leadership change

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly keen on convincing Rohit to continue leading the T20 side. This is despite earlier reports suggesting Rohit's reluctance to play in the shortest format. The BCCI's preference is clear: if Rohit agrees, he will captain the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup. If he steps down, Suryakumar will continue as captain for the South Africa T20Is.

"Yes, there remains a question of what happens when Hardik comes back but in BCCI, they feel that if Rohit agrees to lead in T20Is, he will lead in the T20 World Cup. In case Rohit doesn't agree then Surya continues as captain for T20Is in South Africa," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Also Read: Virat Kohli takes 'indefinite' break from ODIs, T20Is; tells this to BCCI...

The BCCI's decision will be influenced by the imminent return of Hardik Pandya and the workload management of players. With a packed schedule, including six white-ball matches in 11 days followed by a Test series, the choice of captain for different formats becomes crucial.

Rohit Sharma's future in T20Is

Rohit Sharma's leadership received global praise during the ODI World Cup, bolstering the BCCI's confidence in his abilities. However, Rohit's personal choice regarding his participation in T20Is remains a pivotal factor. His decision will significantly impact India's strategy and captaincy structure leading up to the T20 World Cup.

On This Day in 2000

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Nov 30, 2023

23 years ago, on this day, global sensation Priyanka Chopra was crowned with one of the most prestigious beauty pageant titles. Priyanka became India's fifth Miss World on November 30, 2000, at the age of 18. The actress is a global name now and has been making a mark in the entertainment industry. Priyanka competed against other stunning women in the Miss India pageant and finished in the top three to go to the world competition.

She competed against 95 other beauty queens in the Miss World 2000 competition, which was held in the Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom. The actress was crowned Miss World, with Miss Italy and Miss Turkey finishing as runners-up.

On the crowning day, Priyanka Chopra wore a pink strapless gown with a plunging neckline and a sheer matching dupatta for her crowning moment. She accessorised with a crochet-printed choker necklace.

Priyanka Chopra was asked, “Who do you think is the most successful woman living today, and why?” She answered, “There are a lot of people I admire, but one of the most admirable people is Mother Teresa, who has been so compassionate, considerate and kind.”

However, her answer was not really correct as Mother Teresa had passed away in 1997. But she seems to have impressed the judges, and she was crowned Miss World 2000.

She was presented the crown by Yukta Mookhey, who was the reigning Miss World.

Sharing about her time in the competition, Priyanka said on The Howard Stern Show earlier this year, “I was 18. Jerry Springer, RIP, was our host that year. It was in London, it was called the millennium year. So, I am the Millennium Miss World. I guess there is not going to be another one in our lifetimes… it (the Miss World pageant) was a matter of life and death for me. There was nothing else that mattered for me. I was like an athlete. I was like ‘Now that I am here, I can't lose it. I am too near, too close. I didn't aim for this, but now that I am here, I see the finish line'. It was just that I am competitive.”

Prior to Priyanka Chopra, the first Indian to win the crown was Reita Faria Powell in 1966. Then, in 1994, Aishwarya Rai won the honour, followed by Diana Hayden in 1997 and Yukta Mookhey in 1999. After Priyanka Chopra, Manushi Chillar was the next Indian to win the title in 2017.

Rahul Dravid to continue as Team India coach

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Nov 29, 2023

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed an extension to Rahul Dravid's tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, ESPNcricinfo reported. Dravid had a two-year term that concluded recently with the ODI World Cup. The legendary Indian cricketer took over from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

In addition to the head coach role, continuity in the coaching staff is also expected. Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey, and T Dilip, who have been integral to the team's coaching since 2021, are likely to continue in their respective roles as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, as per the publication. LiveMint could not independently verify the report.

Dravid's potential continuation as a coach comes at a pivotal time for Indian cricket. If he accepts, his immediate focus will be the upcoming South Africa tour, commencing December 10. This tour includes T20Is, ODIs, and two Test matches in Centurion and Cape Town. Following this, India will face England in a five-match Test series and participate in the T20 World Cup in June.

“The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has had discussions with Dravid during last week. Obviously, the fine prints of the new contract are yet to be worked out," a senior BCCI office-bearer earlier told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “But BCCI wants Dravid to go to South Africa with the Test team."

“The contract will be worked out but the Test series is important and even if he doesn't go for the T20I series in SA, he can join (the team) from the ODIs," the source added.

Speculations about Dravid's extension

It was earlier speculated that Rahul Dravid could be replaced by one of his former teammates, VVS Laxman. Laxman is presently in charge of India's T20 team which is playing against Australia in a 5-match series at home.

Don't keep so much hopes

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Nov 29, 2023
Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev speaks to PTI during the inauguration of the 2nd edition of the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational Tournament, in Gurugram, Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023. (PTI Photo) (PTI)

Days after India lost the ICC Men's World Cup 2023 trophy to Australia on 19 November, legendary cricketer and India's first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said on 28 November that excess hype often leads to broken hearts and hence it is always necessary to strike a balance.

Kapil said that the Indian fans should refrain from creating too much pressure and treat cricket just as another sport.

"Don't keep so much hope that people end up with broken hearts. We need to keep a balance. Other teams also came to India to compete in the World Cup. We shouldn't create so much hype. We need to look at sports as sports only. Whoever plays well on the day, we need to respect that. We are too emotional," PTI quoted Kapil as saying on the sidelines of the inaugural tee-off ceremony of the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational golf tournament.

ALSO READ Bulaye nahi hume: Kapil Dev claims BCCI ‘forgot' to invite him to 2023 World Cup final, netizens say ‘pathetic!'

Before Australia turned the tables on them at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19, India won 10 games, most of which were lopsided as contests.

India has lost seven knock-out games out of eight ICC tournaments for the past 10 years that they took part in between 2014 to 2023. Kapil doesn't know if the pressure of the occasion gets to them.

"I think today's players can answer how much pressure they feel. We can only feel," he said.

Kapil said there are shortcomings which need to be taken care of. "If they (India) win it feels really good. There are shortcomings which we need to address. It is not that you won't have shortcomings after a win. What's most important is to rectify them," he said.

He urged fans to celebrate what India achieved rather than what they missed out on.

"They (India) won 10 matches in a row. Is it not enough? We should look at other teams as well. We shouldn't compare anyone. What is important is to see whether they played good cricket or not. We played very good cricket. Final day was not ours so be it," the 1983- World Cup-winning captain added.

Kapil cited the examples of South Africa and defending champions England to prove his point.

We should look at the performance of other teams as well like, South Africa, and England who were the defending champions, they finished last (seventh).

On Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma:

The former all-rounder also refrained from commenting on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future in T20 Internationals.

"This is the selector's job and we should leave it to them. It is not good to comment on everything. They are responsible and what they feel good, they should do," he said.

With agency inputs.

Extension on cards

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 29, 2023
Team India head coach Rahul Dravid (Action Images via Reuters)

The BCCI is likely to offer another two-year contract to Rahul Dravid but, as of now, the governing body wants the head coach to guide the team during the tour of South Africa as the modalities are being worked on.

Dravid, under whose coaching India finished runners-up in both the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup, has had a good record in the past two years and many people in the BCCI believe that keeping him would allow the senior team to have continuity.

India will tour South Africa between December 10, 2023, and January 7, 2024 for three each T20Is, ODIs and two Test matches.

“The BCCI secretary Jay Shah has had discussions with Dravid during last week. Obviously, the fine prints of the new contract are yet to be worked out.

“But BCCI wants Dravid to go to South Africa with the Test team," a senior BCCI office-bearer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

So, will he be ready to go for one tour without signing the contract?

“The contract will be worked out but the Test series is important and even if he doesn't go for the T20I series in SA, he can join (the team) from the ODIs," the source said.

In case of VVS Laxman, he might coach the team during the first phase of the series, also allowing him to have a first-hand measure of the ‘A' team.

“Laxman's hands are full with the NCA work plus there's another U19 World Cup coming up. There's A team tour to South Africa.

“He is also involved in cricketing matters with regards to construction of a new NCA facility which is at full swing," the source added.

Dravid, however, hasn't yet intimated his decision as he also has multiple offers to become Team Director/Team Mentor from IPL franchises which is hefty money with much lesser involvement.

However, he may also weigh in on the good work produced by his team which also involves batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip.

It would be interesting to see the nature of Dravid's tenure extension, whether it will be for a year keeping the next T20 World Cup in mind or till 2025 which covers the entire on-going WTC cycle and the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan for now.
