Afghan Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Oct 08, 2023

The death toll from a series of earthquakes in western Afghanistan rose sharply Sunday to more than 1,000 as rescuers scrabbled for survivors among the ruins of villages razed to the ground.

Saturday's magnitude 6.3 quake — followed by eight strong aftershocks — jolted hard-to-reach areas 30 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of the provincial capital of Herat, toppling rural homes and sending panicked city dwellers surging into the streets.

“Unfortunately, the casualties are practically very high,” deputy government spokesman Bilal Karimi said early Sunday, as the extent of the damage became clear.

“The death toll is more than 1,000 people. We are waiting to see how the final figures will turn out,” he told AFP.

As night fell Saturday in Sarboland village of Zinda Jan district, an AFP reporter saw dozens of homes ruined near the epicentre of the quakes, which shook the area for more than five hours.

Men shovelled through piles of crumbled masonry as women and children waited in the open, with gutted homes displaying personal belongings flapping in the harsh wind.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said more than 600 houses were destroyed or partially damaged across at least 12 villages in Herat province, with some 4,200 people affected.

“In the very first shake all the houses collapsed,” said 42-year-old Bashir Ahmad.

“Those who were inside the houses were buried,” he said. “There are families we have heard no news from.”

Nek Mohammad told AFP he was at work when the first quake struck at around 11:00 am (0630 GMT).

“We came home and saw that actually there was nothing left. Everything had turned to sand,” said the 32-year-old, adding that some 30 bodies had been recovered.

“So far, we have nothing. No blankets or anything else. We are here left out at night with our martyrs,” he said as darkness began to fall.

The WHO said late Saturday “the number of casualties is expected to rise as search and rescue operations are ongoing”.

In Herat city, residents fled their homes and schools, hospitals and offices evacuated when the first quake was felt. There were few reports of casualties in the metropolitan area, however.

Afghanistan is already suffering in the grip of a dire humanitarian crisis, with the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid following the Taliban's return to power in 2021.

Herat province — home to some 1.9 million people on the border with Iran — has also been hit by a years-long drought that has crippled many already hardscrabble agricultural communities.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

More than 1,000 people were killed and tens of thousands left homeless in June last year after a 5.9-magnitude quake — the deadliest in Afghanistan in nearly a quarter of a century — struck the impoverished province of Paktika.

Afghanistan men's cricket team will tour India for a three-match T20I series in January, announced the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday.

The series will start on January 11 and will go on till January 17.

"Afghanistan Cricket Board confirms that the Afghanistan National Cricket Team will tour India for a three-match T20I series in early January 2024. The three T20I matches are scheduled for the 11th, 14th & 17th of January," said a statement from ACB.

The first of the three-match T20I series is scheduled for January 11 in Mohali, followed by the second and third matches on January 14 and 17 in Indore and Bengaluru, respectively.

While Afghanistan and India have crossed paths in various Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and ICC events, this series marks the first time these nations will engage in a multi-match white-ball series. Both sides have met in five T20I matches so far, with India winning all of them.

Afghanistan recently visited India for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, where they secured the 6th position on the points table after registering memorable victories against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

India will look to make use of the T20 matches to better prepare for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 which is jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

Afghanistan has had a stellar campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup where the side managed to finish at sixth spot in the league table while registering wins over top sides like England, Pakistan Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. They missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals by just two points as New Zealand got an extra win to send them through to the knockouts.

Afghanistan also will look to prepare themselves well by going up against a top side like India eyeing the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup as well. With several players having played for IPL sides, they are expected to rack up performances to get some momentum ahead of the big tournament.

Meanwhile, India will get started with the five-match T20I series against Australia which starts off from November 23, 2023. Suryakumar Yadav has been announced as the captain of the side marking his first stint of captaincy for the Indian team.

South Africa vs Afghanistan match prediction

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 10, 2023

South Africa will take on Afghanistan in a match that is likely to make no difference in the prospects of the ICC World Cup 2023. The Proteas have won 6 of their last 8 matches and are in the 2nd position on the points table. If they lose today and Australia win their next match, they will lose their 2nd position and be pushed to the 3rd position. However, that won’t technically make any difference as the semi-final will be held between South Africa and Australia anyway.

Afghanistan must have had high hopes for this match until last night when New Zealand thrashed Sri Lanka by 5 wickets and had a massive boost in their net run rate (NRR). As it stands now, Afghanistan now have to beat the African giants by 438 runs to get past the Kiwis to secure a semi-final berth against India. While it's still possible on paper, nobody is actually expecting it to happen.

South Africa vs Afghanistan head-to-head records

South Africa and Afghanistan have played only one match so far. It was during the ICC World Cup 2019 in Cardiff. Afghanistan were bowled for 125 under 35 overs. Imran Tahir was the star bowler for the Proteas, with 4 wickets for 29 runs.

South Africa vs Afghanistan pitch report

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, also known by the location - Motera, earlier helped spinners and didn't produce many runs. Lately, especially in IPL games, it's become better for batting.

So far, 29 ODIs have been played in this venue, with 15 of those won by teams batting first and 14 by those fielding first. On November 4, Australia and England faced off here. Australia won by 33 runs.

South Africa vs Afghanistan weather

Ahmedabad will be hot, with the temperature going as high as 35 degrees when the match starts and gradually cool down to 27 degrees later in the evening. With no chance of rain and a clear sky, Ahmedabad will offer moderate humidity at 69%.

South Africa vs Afghanistan prediction

As per Google's win probability, there is a 76% chance that South Africa will beat Afghanistan in this match.

Virat Kohli, Tendulkar's reaction to Maxwell's double century breaks internet

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 08, 2023
ICC World Cup 2023: Australia's Glenn Maxwell celebrates his double-century and the team's victory against Afghanistan in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, at Wankhede Stadium (ICC)

ICC World Cup 2023: Australia's all-rounder Glenn Maxwell single-handedly took his team to the semi-finals as he crushed Afghanistan with an unbeaten 201. Australia was in a dire position at 91/7 and Afghanistan almost took the game home when the Big Show arrived on the crease and he was just unstoppable. Despite injuries, Glenn Maxwell kept slamming boundaries and finally took his team to victory. Glenn Maxwell's terrific innings attracted praise from Indian legends as Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar shared posts for the batter.

England vs Netherlands Live Score Updates

"Only you could do this, freak @gmaxi_32" Virat Kohli said in the Instagram story.

"A wonderful knock by @IZadran18to put Afghanistan in a good position. They started well in the 2nd half and played good cricket for 70 overs but the last 25 overs from @Gmaxi_32 was more than enough to change their fortune. From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I've seen in my life. #AUSvAFG," Sachin posted from his X handle.

Coming back to the ‘Big Show,' Glenn Maxwell has been great in the ICC World Cup so far. He missed the last match against England due to injury, but what a way to come back. Earlier, he slammed the fastest 100 of the World Cup history as he smashed a ton in just 40 balls.

"We talked about coming off, trying to get some work into my back, and trying to loosen up my legs a little bit. Jonesy (Nick Jones) the physio said it would be really hard for me to come back down the stairs after that. We just came up with 'let's stay at the same end' for as long as you can until you feel like you can walk to the other end or if there's an easy single here and there," Glenn Maxwell told cricket.com.au.

"It was a strange one because I was cramping in one of my toes, which was going up the front of my shin. Then as I set off to try and get down the other end, I cramped in my calf as well. I was cramping both sides of my lower leg, and as I went 'Oh no, I'm cramping' I cramped in my left hamstring at the same time. I was like, I've got both legs cramping, and then I had a back spasm when I hit the ground," the all-rounder said.

New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan to fight for last semi-finals spot

With this victory, Australia became the third team to qualify for the semi-finals and Afghanistan's road to the top 4 became more difficult. New Zealand, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are the three teams in the race for the fourth spot on the points table and the three teams will play their final league stage matches in the upcoming days. New Zealand seems to have an advantage over the other three as they have a better Net Run Rate (NRR).

Wounded lion most dangerous

Glenn Maxwell of Australia in action against Afghanistan, during cricket world cup, at Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai,

Australia vs Afghanistan: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell smashed a historic double century that helped Aussies script a miraculous win over Afghanistan in their ICC Cricket World Cup match at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. His epic show by smashing an unbeaten 201* in 128 balls, with 21 fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of over 157 on Tuesday brought Team Australia qualify for semi-final.

Australia joined India and South Africa in the last four and damaged Afghanistan's unlikely bid to reach the semifinals.

After the match, Glenn Maxwell said his entire body was in pain and that he almost retired during an epic match-winning double century. Maxwell was experiencing excruciating cramping. There was a point when he gave way in excruciating pain, limping between the wickets.

Maxwell admitted discussing with Australian physio Nick Jones whether he should retire after his body gave up and he sank to the ground while on 147 and with 55 runs still needed to win.

"It was a strange one, because I was cramping in one of my toes, which was sort of going up the front of my shin. And then as I set off to try and get down the other end, I cramped in that calf as well," he told Australian media.

Witnessing his astonishing performance, cricket fans on social media expressed their reactions through memes with some calling comparing him with The Undertaker. Some also drew parallels between Maxwell and a wounded lion, calling him dangerous.

Human rights or 2 points

Afghanistan's Naveen-ul-Haq. (AFP)

Afghanistan cricket team fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq on Saturday took a dig at Australia before the two teams face off against each other in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on November 7, Tuesday. He posted a story on his official Instagram handle and referred to the time in 2021.

The Australian team cancelled its travel plans to Afghanistan in 2021 due to the political situation when the Taliban took control of the Afghan nation.

“Refusing to play the bilateral series, now it will be interesting to see cricket Australia stand in the World Cup #standards #humanrights or 2 points," Naveen wrote on the social media platform.

Meanwhile, Australia on Saturday defeated England by 33 runs to officially knock out the defending champions out of World Cup 2023. Spinner Adam Zampa clinched some crucial wickets to provide breakthroughs for his team, while Ben Stokes fought well for England scoring 64 runs.

Australia's strong batting order couldn't do that well against out-of-the-form English bowlers and the team was all out on a score of 286 runs. Chris Woakes clinched 4 wickets while Mark Wood and Adil Rashid got 2 wickets each to stop Australia just shy of the coveted 300 run mark.

The five-time world champions have had a decent campaign so far and are looking set to reach the semi-finals of the marquee event with 5 wins in their 7 matches so far.

On the other hand, Afghanistan on Friday dominated the game as they defeated the Netherlands by 7 wickets to clinch their 4th win of the tournament. Mohammad Nabi was awarded player of the match for picking up three wickets in the Netherlands vs Afghanistan World Cup match.

Afghanistan has played really well in the ICC World Cup 2023 so far and defeated three world champions- England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The team that entered as underdogs in the tournament are dominating the game and have a good chance of entering the World Cup 2023 semi-finals.

Pakistan Using Its

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Nov 04, 2023

To counter the backlash over the expulsion of Afghan refugees, Pakistan is using its “puppet Prime Minister” Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, who is a Pashtun, as its cover, said Afghanistan's Acting President-in-Exile Amrullah Saleh in an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18.

“As to what they want politically out of it, because their puppets are in power in Kabul, this way they are trying to shift some of the militant training camps under the pretext of the expulsion of refugees into Afghanistan,” he said. “I have no doubt that the Pakistan intelligence establishment has thought of 3-4 other steps…if there's something happening, then they say it is not us, it has happened from Afghanistan, we are pushing the refugees out. So we have to be vigilant about that angle of this matter also. In the meantime, for us, the political face of it they are using a puppet Prime Minister, who is not elected, and he is a Pashtun.”

With this ploy, Pakistan is trying to minimise the racial aspect of the refugee expulsion, Saleh said.

“It was not done by a Punjabi, it was not done by a Sindhi, it was done by a Pashtun prime minister, from the same clan, same blood, same ethnic background. So they have calculated this also. But we all know that Kakar is a puppet of the GHQ, he is not elected, and his remarks against his own identity in the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) were so disgraceful,” he said. “In the meantime, there are reports that because the Durand Line in recent years had become very blurred, and it had lost relevance, although the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan made several references to the Gandamak treaty, that had also lost relevance psychologically, this year in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, there was no flag of Pakistan hoisted by communities during their independence celebrations.”

Pakistan is very fearful, said Saleh. “And they see this situation as conducive and suitable to apply maximum pressure on their puppets in Kabul to gain some concessions on the Durand Line issue. They are trying everything, including causing massive human pain, causing a massive humanitarian crisis, then using that pain to gain concessions. This is a very old tactic,” he said.

Until recently, the Netherlands were not aware that they would qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025 if they managed to finish the ICC World Cup 2023 among the Top 8 teams. They didn’t realise that a change in rules a couple of years back had made it possible for lower-ranked teams. Now, that should be enough inspiration for them to try to pull off a victory against Afghanistan even though the Dutch do not technically have a chance to move ahead in this tournament.

Afghans, on the other hand, will go for glory. Presently at number 6, they can create history by qualifying for the semi-finals if they end up being among the Top 4. They cannot afford to lose this match as their remaining two matches are against mighty opponents, Australia (Nov 7) and South Africa (Nov 10). If Afghanistan win this match, they will level their points with Australia and New Zealand (current number 3 and 4 respectively)

Netherlands vs Afghanistan head-to-head records

These two teams have played 9 ODIs against each other so far. Afghanistan have won 7 of those and the Netherlands 2. The last time (January 2022) these two faced off in in Doha, Qatar, when Afghanistan won the ODI series 3-0.

Netherlands vs Afghanistan pitch report

The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow is known as a haven for spinners and slower bowlers, resulting in low-scoring games. However, the new World Cup wickets, made from black soil, have favoured batters as well.

So far, 8 ODIs have been played at this venue. There were 4 occasions when teams batting first won the match. It's the same number for those bowling first.

Netherlands vs Afghanistan weather

In Lucknow, there are predictions for early morning showers. However, there is no chance of rain later in the day, as per Weather.com. The temperature will go as high as 31 degrees when the match starts. It will significantly cool down to 22 degrees during the late evening. The humidity will be moderate at 58%.

Netherlands vs Afghanistan prediction

As per Google's win probability, there is a 74% chance that Afghanistan will beat the Netherlands in this match.
