UNSC Meeting Convened on Friday as Israel-Hamas War Escalates Published 30 minutes ago

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Oct 12, 2023

Brazil, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, called a Friday meeting of the body to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, its foreign affairs ministry said Wednesday.

Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira has interrupted an Asia trip to travel “to New York to participate in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, called by Brazil… to address the situation in the Gaza Strip,” the ministry said in a statement.

Brazil previously called an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Sunday, the day after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. Israeli forces say 1,200 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the onslaught — the worst in the country's history.

As Israel pounded Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip — a densely populated enclave of 2.3 million people — in response, the death toll there has also reached 1,200 people, including a high number of civilians, according to Palestinian authorities.

More than 338,000 people in the enclave have been displaced, according to the United Nations. At Sunday's Security Council meeting, members were divided over policy concerning Israel and the Palestinians.

Earlier on Wednesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for urgent international action to protect both Palestinian and Israeli civilians, especially children. “Children must never be held hostage, anywhere in the world,” Lula wrote on social media platform X.

“Hamas needs to free the Israeli children who were kidnapped from their families. Israel needs to stop its bombing so Palestinian children and their mothers can leave the Gaza Strip via the Egyptian border,” he said. “There needs to be a minimum of humanity in the insanity of war.”

Ex-Barcelona Defender Dani Alves Looking At 9-Year Prison Sentence In Spain For Sexual Assault

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Nov 24, 2023

Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence for Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman last year, a Spanish court said Thursday.

Alves is set to face trial over allegations he assaulted the woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 30. He was indicted by an investigative judge in August and the court said this month there was enough evidence to open a trial. A date for the hearings was not yet set.

The former Barcelona defender has denied any wrongdoing, claiming he had consensual sex with the accuser.

Prosecutors also want Alves to pay 150,000 euros ($163,000) in damages to the victim, and to be prohibited from having any contact with her for an additional 10 years. They also want Alves to be remain supervised for a decade after serving his prison term.

If found guilty, Alves would be prohibited from any type of work with minors for 10 years after his term, in accordance with Spanish law.

Under Spain's new sexual consent law, the charge of sexual assault takes in a wide array of crimes from online abuse and groping to rape, each with different possible punishments. In Spain, a claim of rape is investigated under the general accusation of sexual assault and convictions can lead to prison sentences of between four and 15 years.

The 40-year-old Alves has been in pre-trial jail since January, when he was arrested after an initial investigation by authorities.

All of Alves' bail requests have been denied because the court has considered him a flight risk. The player had offered to turn in his passports and wear a tracking device while awaiting the court's decision.

Prosecutors this week again opposed the most recent request for freedom made by Alves' lawyers.

Alves won 42 soccer titles, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil. He played at his third World Cup last year in Qatar.

His lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Crazy Scenes

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Nov 22, 2023

The atmosphere at the Maracana Stadium turned quite chaotic ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifier between two South American powerhouses Brazil and Argentina on Wednesday.

With Lionel Messi leading the Argentine side, many visiting fans were at the stadium to cheer for their country. Before the on-field proceedings would kick off, mayhem erupted between the Brazilian police and a section of Argentine fans behind one of the goals. The stand was holding more than 3,000 spectators. The turbulent scenario transpired during the national anthems after fans of both teams suddenly got engaged in a brawl.

When the situation went out of control, the Brazilian police had to intervene. They went on to charge with batons to break up the fight. In some widely circulated videos, the police personnel were seen hitting some Argentine fans, while the others were falling behind with fear. A few of them also came down to the pitch to save themselves. One fan was captured lying on the ground with a bloodied face. He was later taken out of the stadium on a stretcher.

While all of these were happening, Messi and other Argentine footballers were waiting for the match to start. Players of both sides came forward and urged their fans to calm down. Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez climbed up on the railings to stop the police from hitting the fans.

Glimpses of the unpleasant event were shared on X by football journalist Fabrizio Romano. “Crazy scenes in the stands at Maracanã between Brazilian police and Argentina fans,” the caption of the post read.

According to a report by AFP, Col. Vagner Ferreira, the highest-ranking police officer in the stadium, put the entire blame on the organisers of the match, citing the lack of a barrier between the fans of both teams in the stands. Irked by the police's behaviour, the Argentine squad decided to leave the field and went straight into the tunnel. The Brazilian unit stayed at the pitch and waited for 22 minutes until their opponent came out of the locker room.

Messi addressed the topic during the post-match press conference. “There were families of the players there. We were more worried about that than playing the match. We went to the locker room because that was the way to make it all calm. From below, we couldn't do much, we saw how the police hit people,” the Argentine captain said.

Looking at the on-field development, Argentina secured a narrow victory in the tense South American World Cup qualifier, thanks to a goal by Nicolas Otamendi. With five wins in six games, Messi and Co. are holding the top spot in the table. Meanwhile, Brazil have managed only two victories thus far and are reeling in sixth place.

In a fiery 2026 World Cup qualifying clash, Argentina emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Brazil. But, the match was overshadowed by pre-match crowd trouble that caused a delay in kick-off.

The tension between the two South American giants escalated at Rio's iconic Maracana Stadium before the game even began. Brazilian police were forced to intervene. They used batons to disperse a group of Argentine fans, creating a volatile atmosphere.

The Argentine players attempted to calm the situation. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez even tried to confront a baton-wielding Brazilian police officer.

At one point, Lionel Messi and his teammates briefly left the field. Messi expressed their reluctance to play amid the chaos. "We're not playing, we're leaving," AFP quoted Leo as apparently saying.

The teams finally returned to the field after a delay of approximately 30 minutes. The tense atmosphere continued. Early clashes led to bookings for both sides.

None of the teams could produce clear-cut chances in the first half. Frequent fouls disrupted the flow of the game. Brazil's Raphinha was booked for an arm-to-face incident. Argentina's Rodrigo De Paul also faced rough challenges.

Brazil struggled to create meaningful opportunities, with their first shot on goal coming in the 38th minute. Gabriel Martinelli's attempt was cleared off the line by Argentina's Cristian Romero.

The second half saw Brazil with a more positive approach. However, Argentina took the lead in the 63rd minute with Nicolas Otamendi's headed goal from a corner delivered by Giovani Lo Celso. Brazil's woes continued as substitute Joelinton was sent off in the 82nd minute for an off-the-ball incident with De Paul.

Brazil in trouble

This was Brazil's third consecutive defeat in World Cup qualifiers, a first in their football history. It also marks their first-ever home loss in a World Cup qualifier. Argentina's victory further confirmed their place on top of the South American qualifying standings with 15 points from six games. Brazil now find themselves in the sixth place with seven points from six games.

Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador are ahead of Brazil on the points table at the moment. The five-time world champions, however, have a lot of time to recover since the South America World Cup qualifiers will go on until September 2025.

Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves will face trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a night club last year, a Spanish court said Tuesday.

The Barcelona-based court said “there was enough evidence to open the trial” considering the statements given to court and the evidence presented in the investigation phase. A date for the hearings was yet to be set.

The 40-year-old Alves has been in pre-trial jail since January when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting the woman at a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 30. He was indicted by an investigative judge in August.

Brazil to help India boost ethanol production

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 15, 2023
Sugarcane crop being harvested in Brazil for ethanol production. (Bloomberg)

New Delhi: Brazil has started sharing technology with India to help it achieve 20% ethanol blending for petrol by 2025-2026, and will send indigenous breeds to improve productivity in the livestock and poultry sector, said Brazilian agriculture and livestock minister Carlos Favaro in an interview. Brazil is the world’s second largest producer of ethanol.

Brazil will also take measures to correct some of the imbalance in the agricultural trade relationship by improving market access for Indian agriculture exports, including urea, to Brazil. “We, through some companies, have already started sharing the technology to enhance ethanol blending with petrol. As India produces a lot of sugarcane, it's easy for them to reach up to 30% because we already have technologies with a capacity of 27.5 that can go up to 30%. The technology that we are sharing with India will help them to achieve the 20% blending target by 2025-26," Favaro told Mint during his visit to India earlier this month.

“In the past, we have received some genetic materials from other countries in Brazil and we managed to enhance the productivity of those indigenous breeds. Now we are planning to send those genetic materials to India so that they can take advantage of the breed that has higher productivity and increase their net milk and poultry production. We are happy to share it with India. Additionally, to ensure food security, Brazil can help India by transferring more technology, so that the country can produce more and meet their requirements. Embrapa (a Brazilian state-owned research corporation) has the technology to improve the soil quality and productivity to 6,000-7,000 kg per hectare from 2,000 hectares. It is relatively low in cost. This way India's collaboration with Embrapa will help them produce more than the current production," Favaro added. In turn, India's UPL, a Mumbai-based crop nutrition products company, will help Brazil convert degraded pastures into productive land for agricultural uses to increase production and ensure food security, Favaro added. Brazil boasts an extensive landmass of 851 million hectares, with 584 million hectares (66%) covered by forests and 159 million hectares (18.6%) allocated to pastures. Among these pasture lands, 40 million hectares have been identified as having substantial potential for agricultural development, including the production of grains and oilseeds.

“We are committed to ensuring food security and food availability to address hunger and malnutrition. At the same time, we are committed to saving our forests and India can help us a lot in that area. We had a meeting on 2 November with Indian business houses as we are seeking investment to do farming in a way that we produce more so that we don't need to cut the forest to have more farmland," Favaro said.

The push for cooperation in agriculture comes ahead of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva launching a programme to convert degraded pastures into productive land.

“We have discussed it with some Indian companies like UPL that can help us with the investment," the agriculture minister said. The estimated cost of pasture restoration, encompassing soil correction, acquisition of modern machinery, the implementation of environmentally responsible agricultural systems, and support for operational expenses is $1,500-3,000 per hectare. Consequently, this project presents investment opportunities of up to $120 billion.

“We (India and Brazil) are both fighting hunger, ensuring food security and preserving the environment. By using this land, we don't need to go into the Amazon region because we have spare degraded land that we can convert into high-using land," Favaro added.

Brazil is also looking at India for cooperation in sectors of fertilisers, especially urea, innovative chemical products, bio fertilisers, software and algorithms so that the country can have competitiveness.

Another focus is redressing the unbalanced agriculture trade between India and Brazil. In 2021-22, India exported agricultural goods to the tune of just over $71 million to Brazil and imported similar goods worth $1.4 billion, according to the Indian government's trade data.

Favaro revealed that both sides are finalising an agreement to grant more access for Indian millets and sorghum in the Brazilian market. India will reciprocate by providing more access to Brazilian avocados and citrus.

Neymar Jr's Partner Bruna Biancardi And Newborn Baby Escape Kidnapping Attempt In Brazil Residence

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Nov 09, 2023

Seems like Liverpool's Luis Diaz is not the only one combating having family members kidnapped, as the latest reports state that the parents of Al Hilal forward Neymar Jr's girlfriend, Bruna Biancardi, were tied up and robbed in an attempted kidnapping of his newborn daughter in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The Biancardi's residence, located in the municipality of Cotia, was stormed by a criminal gang on Tuesday. Thankfully both Bruna and her newborn baby were not present in their residence when their home was broken into, but the armed suspects are said to have scoured the premises in search of the two, stated the Municipal Civil Guard.

Follow all the action from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 including the World Cup schedule, World Cup 2023 results, and ICC Cricket World Cup points table. Players are vying to top the World Cup 2023 Most Runs and World Cup 2023 Most Wickets charts.

In retaliation, the suspects are said to have “tied up” Biancardi's parents and stole valuables from the house. No injuries to anyone was reported.

As well as the two armed gang members, a third man was apparently seen outside the property shortly before the break-in.

“According to reports, three armed men allegedly entered the residence and overpowered the 50-year-old and 52-year-old victims. The suspects stole purses, watches, and jewellery,” a statement issued by the Sao Paulo Department of Public Security was quoted as saying.

It has been reported that one accused of the three, a 20-year-old man, has been captured and taken into custody for questioning.

Bruna Biancardi took to social media platform Instagram to express her relief after the happenings.

“Material things are recovered, the important thing is that everyone is OK and that the people involved are being found (sic),” she stated.

Neymar also took to social media to inform that it was a “sad day” for him due to two unfortunate news.

“First was the attack that Bru's parents suffered, but thank God everyone is fine! (sic),” he posted, adding that the second news was of the death of his friend.

Neymar is currently in rehab after sustaining a horror ACL injury and will be unavailable to indulge in any footballing action for the foreseeable future.

Neymar underwent surgery at a hospital in his native Brazil to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage suffered during a national team match last month.

The injury is expected to sideline him for several months, including for Brazil's upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month against Colombia and arch rivals Argentina.

Ronaldinho Lights Up Durga Puja Festivities in Kolkata During India Visit

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Oct 17, 2023

Wearing his infectious goofy grin, 'Samba Magician' Ronaldinho cast a spell on the football-crazy denizens of Kolkata as his arrival for a two-day visit here ushered in an early onset of the Durga Puja festival.

The Durga Puja, the grandest festival in the region, traditionally commences on the sixth day (Shasthi) following Mahalaya, but it got rolling on the second day itself with the 'Gaucho' inaugurating a series of pandals.

On a day Union Home Minister Amit Shah also came to inaugurate a Durga Puja pandal, it was the Brazil legend who took all the limelight.

Wherever he went, chants of 'Ronaldinho, Ronaldinho' and 'Brazil, Brazil' echoed through the crowd, as hundreds of fans eagerly gathered to catch a glimpse of the former Barcelona and AC Milan star.

Ronaldinho got himself dressed up in casual shorts, a loosely-fitted navy blue T-shirt, and topping it with his signature snapback cap.

”Muchas gracias. Mucho carino (many thanks, much affection),” the 'King of Jogo Bonito' conveyed with a ‘I Love You' gesture with his goofy smile captivating his fans who followed him everywhere he went.

The 43-year-old Brazilian great, who checked in late on Sunday, defied jetlag and began his day heading to inaugurate his academy — ”R10” — at Merlin Rise residential complex in the eastern suburbs.

Hundreds of kids of various age groups gathered at the academy to catch a glimpse of their favourite Brazilian star, who shot himself into the limelight with his extraordinary dribbling skills, close ball control, and creativity on the field during their 2002 World Cup triumph, the last one for the five-time champions.

A giant screen on the backdrop of the stage showed Ronaldinho's magical football moments, including his spectacular long-range free-kick that virtually ended England's fate in the 2002 World Cup quarterfinal.

His next destination was in north Kolkata, where he inaugurated a Durga Puja pandal designed around a Disneyland theme. Ronaldinho got a traditional Hindu welcome, with a tilak on the forehead as he showed curiosity, exploring the pandal while inquiring about the rituals.

Ronaldinho also paid floral tributes to a statue of Argentine icon Diego Maradona who also had enthralled Kolkata's football fans during his twin visits in 2008 and 2017.

Calling on Mamata Banerjee was the next on Ronaldinho's agenda, as he headed to the West Bengal chief minister's residence in Kalighat where officials of the 'Big Three' clubs — Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting — welcomed him.

”The CM briefed him about the clubs' century-old legacies, and he appeared deeply engrossed. The CM also requested him to consider sending more Brazilian players to Kolkata to elevate the standards of the game. We all presented him with club jerseys,” East Bengal's top official, Nitu Sarkar, told PTI.

Ronaldinho also met with East Bengal sponsors later in the day.

The Brazilian then took part in an official trophy-handing ceremony of the Calcutta Football League Premier Division tournament, crowning Mohammedan Sporting champions at the Indian Football Association.

There were more Durga Puja pandal inaugurations, this time crisscrossing the city and extending to the southern suburbs in Narendrapur and Baruipur, but Ronaldinho remained high in spirits and obliged his fans at every stop.

More excitement is in store for his fans on Tuesday as well as the Brazilian is expected to weave his 'Samba Magic' during an exhibition match at the south-western suburb of Maheshtala in the afternoon.
