Hamas 'Takes Evil to Another Level' from IS Jihadists

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Oct 13, 2023

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday said Hamas fighters took “evil to another level” from Islamic State jihadists, as he pledged “iron-clad” backing for Israel in its war against the Palestinian Islamists.

“In encountering ISIS I felt as if we were staring evil in the eye — it was truly evil,” said Austin after talks with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant. “And what we've seen from Hamas, it takes that evil to another level.”

Austin underlined that there is “never any justification for terrorism and that's especially true after this rampage by Hamas”. Washington, he said, will provide Israel with what it needs to defend itself. “The United States has Israel's back and that is not negotiable and it never will be,” vowed Austin.

The defence secretary however cautioned that the fightback against Hamas must take place within boundaries. “Democracies like ours are stronger and more secure when we uphold the laws of war,” he said, expressing confidence in the “well-led” Israeli forces to “be disciplined” in their operations to uproot Hamas.

MotoGP Great Valentino Rossi to Race Full WEC Season and Le Mans

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

MotoGP great Valentino Rossi will do a full season with BMW in the new LMGT3 category of the FIA World Endurance Championship, including competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours, organisers announced on Monday.

The LMGT3 category replaces the LMGTE class that has been on the grid since 2012.

Rossi, 44, will be making his Le Mans 24 Hours debut next June in the number 46 car — the same number he raced with on two wheels in a career that brought him nine world championships.

The Italian, who also owns the VR46 MotoGP team, won a Road to Le Mans support race this year.

“I am very excited to compete in the FIA WEC. It is the next step for me to participate in a world championship, not only in Europe but to race globally again,” he said in a BMW statement.

“I am already familiar with the car after this season, but the format with three drivers from three different performance categories will be new for me. Overall, I believe we will be very well positioned.”

Polish former Formula One driver Robert Kubica will be driving a Ferrari in the top Hypercar category of the championship with the AF Corse team after winning the now-defunct LMP2 category.

Mick Schumacher, a Mercedes F1 reserve driver and son of Ferrari great Michael, will be making his Hypercar debut in the series with Renault-owned Alpine.

Championship organisers published the entry list on Monday with a record 19 Hypercars and 14 manufacturers represented across both classes. The LMGT3 class has 18 entries.

The manufacturers are Alpine, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Isotta Fraschini, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Peugeot, Porsche and champions Toyota. Nine of them will be competing in the Hypercar championship.

McLaren have partnered with United Autosports to make their LMGT3 debut.

“To have an entry list featuring 19 Hypercars plus 18 LMGT3 entries representing 14 different manufacturers truly reflects the golden era of endurance racing that we are experiencing right now,” said WEC chief executive Frederic Lequien.

Keep it within yourself

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 28, 2023
Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir (ANI)

Despite India losing the ICC Men's World Cup 2023 trophy to Australia on 19 November, one person applauded for making the team reach finals unbeaten was Indian head coach and legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid.

He received appreciation from a lot of former cricketers, but former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir lauded Rahul Dravid's coaching stint, calling it a successful one.

However, he also reminded captain Rohit Sharma that the team wants to win the World Cup for the country and not any particular individual.

ALSO READ: India not the ‘best team' in World Cup 2023: Gautam Gambhir says, ‘It did not matter whether you finished first…'

Reacting to a question about Dravid's future as India's head coach, Gambhir said on Sportskeeda, as quoted by Hindustan Times, "Dravid's contract as head coach should be automatically renewed. The kind of cricket that India played throughout the World Cup, if you are going to judge a coach by just one match then it is a wrong precedent."

On the contrary, Gambhir expressed his reservations against Rohit's statements before the World Cup final.

Earlier, on the eve of the final against Australia, Rohit had said that the team wanted to win the trophy for head coach Dravid for the kind of efforts he has put in for the betterment of the players, added the report.

"The way he stood by the players in difficult times, especially during the T20 World Cup, where we had a good run up until that semifinal, where we lost. How he reacted to certain situations and informed the players was helpful. He wants to be part of this big occasion, and it's for us to do it for him," the Indian captain had said.

This statement was not happily taken by Gambhirthe. Even in 2011 World Cup, many Indian players openly said that they wanted to win the World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar.

Reacting to this, Gambhir said, "Every player, every coach wants to win the World Cup. If he wants a renewal then definitely he should be given that chance. What better than continuity? I would never understand one thing. It happened during our time in 2011 too. When you say that you want to win the World Cup an individual, doesn't matter who that is... this statement is not right."

"You are trying to win the World Cup for the entire country. And if you want to say such a thing then don't say it in the media. Keep it within yourself. The truth is, it is more important to win a World Cup for the nation. I was asked the same in 2011 when everyone said we were trying to win the World Cup for one individual, I said no I want to win the Cup for my country. I picked up the bat for my country. So Rohit probably shouldn't have said this," he added.

Dravid as Indian coach:

Gambhir reiterated that Dravid should remain the India head coach and build towards the next T20 and ODI World Cups.

"But as far as Dravid's coaching credentials are concerned, he should be given an extension if he wants to continue. I', very happy with his tenure. And not just for a year but at least two years because India will enter a rebuilding phase soon. You might not see Rohit Sharma, Bumrah, and Shami in the next World Cup. So it's important to build towards the 50 over World Cup," he added.

Urge Strict Action

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

A prominent US Sikh body has condemned the heckling of India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu during a visit to a New York gurdwara and urged the shrine's management to take strict action against miscreants involved in the incident.

On Sunday, Ambassador Sandhu offered prayers at the Hicksville gurdwara in Long Island, New York on the occasion of Gurpurab. During his visit to the gurdwara, a group of Khalistani supporters made remarks about Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, killed in Canada in June this year, according to videos of the incident circulating on social media. The hecklers were later escorted out by members of the Sikh community.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sikhs of America said gurdwaras are places of worship and should be free from personal political views. “We urge the management of the Gurdwara Sahib to take strict actions against these miscreants so that peace-loving Sikh Community in New York can come to gurdwaras freely without any fear or pressure,” Sikhs of America's founder and chairman Jasdip Singh Jassee and its president Kanwaljit Singh Soni, was quoted as saying by PTI, in the joint statement.

“Ambassador Sandhu went to Gurdwara Sahib to pray and the management of Gurdwara Sahib honoured him with Saropa Sahib. After that, a handful of miscreants tried to disrespect him and violated the peace and sanctity of the Gurdwara Sahib. Gurdwaras are places of worship and should be free from personal political views,” the statement said. “Sikhs of America, the leading Sikh organisation in the USA, strongly condemns the disrespect of a Sikh devotee, Ambassador of India to USA Taranjit Singh Sandhu in a Gurdwara in Long Island, NY yesterday,” it said.

Ambassador Sandhu, who received a warm welcome at the Hicksville gurdwara against the perceived notion of opposition from Khalistanis, spoke about the historical linkages between Sikh Gurus, Sikhs, and Afghanistan. In his speech, Sandhu highlighted growth in the India-US partnership across healthcare, energy, IT, new emerging technologies, semiconductor and education sectors.

Khalistanis ‘Heckle' Indian Envoy at US Gurdwara? As BJP Leaders React, Here's What Sources Say

After the video of the ‘heckling' incident went viral on social media, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa denounced the incident, stating that these ‘goons' who disrespected the grandson of a great 20th-century Sikh leader are ‘not Sikhs.' BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh revealed that the pro-Khalistan supporter who was involved in the incident at Hicksville Gurdwara was in fact the President of Surrey Gurdwara and the coordinator for the Canadian Chapter of the Khalistan Referendum.

Dutch Firebrand Wilders Faces Crisis as Appointed Scout Resigns Over Fraud Allegations Published 18 minutes ago

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 27, 2023

Far-right Dutch firebrand Geert Wilders suffered a major blow Monday, as his handpicked “scout” to oversee coalition talks quit over fraud allegations, throwing the fraught process into chaos before negotiations had even begun.

Leaders in Europe and around the world are closely watching to see if Wilders and his PVV Freedom Party can form a government with partners wary of his strident anti-Islam, anti-immigrant and anti-EU views. Wilders pulled off a political earthquake on Wednesday with a shock election win, clinching 37 seats in the 150-seat parliament and putting him in pole position to replace Mark Rutte as prime minister.

But there was immediate turmoil as the “scout” Wilders appointed to shuttle between party leaders to clinch a deal stepped down after media reports surfaced over alleged graft at a past company. The “unrest” surrounding the reports and the time required to respond properly “do not go well together with my work as the scout,” said Gom van Strien, a PVV senator.

“I have therefore told Geert Wilders and the chairwoman of the parliament that I have resigned my position as scout with immediate effect,” said Van Strien. Van Strien was supposed to begin the formal task of forming a coalition later Monday, meeting the top party leaders, starting with Wilders himself. The meetings were later scrapped.

The NRC daily had reported on Sunday that a former employer of van Strien, Utrecht Holdings, had filed a police report about fraud allegedly carried out by the senator and other colleagues. Van Strien denounced the allegations as “unfounded” and said he had “complied with all laws and regulations”, vowing initially to soldier on, but the pressure apparently became too great.

“Not my dream start,” admitted the far-right leader, who had been in bullish mood at the weekend, writing that he would be “prime minister of this beautiful country.” He said he already had a replacement as scout in mind “with more distance from politics”, hoping to announce an appointment on Tuesday. “I don't find it very pleasant that I was not informed” about the fraud allegations, said Wilders.

Lower House chairwoman Vera Bergkamp said it was “annoying to start the scout process in this way” and urged a new candidate to be appointed as soon as possible. Even before the turmoil of the resignation, Wilders had already faced an uphill battle to build a coalition.

While he has repeatedly stressed his willingness to moderate his extreme views, the PVV manifesto calls for a ban on mosques, Korans, and headscarves, plus a referendum on leaving the European Union. His preferred coalition is with the BBB farmers party (seven seats), the pro-reform NSC party of Pieter Omtzigt (20 seats) and the party currently in power, the centre-right VVD (24 seats).

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz has already ruled out serving in a cabinet under Wilders, but has indicated she would be willing to “support a centre-right coalition.” Yesilgoz, who lost 10 seats compared to the last election fought by VVD Prime Minister Mark Rutte, has come under pressure even from inside her own party for this stance.

Wilders urged everyone to “come to the table to solve the problems of the Netherlands”, adding that a deal could be clinched “in a couple of weeks” if everyone was prepared to make compromises. However, most analysts do not expect a government to be formed until well into next year and the scout's sudden resignation will certainly slow the process down.
