What Does Former PM Nawaz Sharif's Homecoming Mean for Pakistan Published 19 minutes ago

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Oct 20, 2023

Three-time Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif will return from exile eager to make yet another comeback in a country mired in political and economic chaos.

The 73-year-old is one of the nation's wealthiest men, with a fortune earned in the steel business, but is admired by supporters for his approachable “man of the soil” demeanour.

Often draped in a red Gucci scarf, his political fortunes have risen and fallen on his relationship with Pakistan's powerful military establishment –- the country's true kingmakers. Fans call him “the Lion of Punjab”, the eastern and most populous province where his support is strongest, and he is known to parade big cats at extravagant political events drumming up support.

Despite a conviction for graft hanging over him, a court this week granted him protective bail until Tuesday — paving the way for a welcome home rally that has been on the cards for months. After four years of self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom, it will be a major test of clout for one of the big beasts of Pakistani politics.

Sharif is widely believed to have continued pulling the strings of his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, even after his brother Shehbaz led them to power last year in a coalition ousting Imran Khan. Nawaz first took power in 1990 with the blessing of the establishment, but was forced out three years later by corruption allegations — a theme that has dogged his career.

He has lived for years in Saudi Arabia and London — where the Sharif family have extensive luxury properties — only to return to Pakistan each time with renewed zeal. Stung by the nationalisation of the family steel business — which he later regained control of — Sharif is a fiscal conservative and champion of economic liberalisation and free markets.

He oversaw the privatisation of several key state enterprises — including banks and energy producers — in a process critics say was riven by corruption.

He was also one of the key drivers of the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that underpins relations between Islamabad and Beijing.

During his various stints as premier he was accused of stacking courts with loyalist judges, tinkering with the constitution, and rigging provincial elections to shore up his party's power bases.

His second reign of power lasted two years and ended in 1999 with him deposed in a military coup after plotting to sideline his army chief of staff, Pervez Musharraf. Sharif narrowly avoided the death sentence in a hastily convened trial before being sent into self-imposed exile.

More than a decade later and he was back in power, in part because of his brother's diligent performance as chief minister of Punjab, regarded Pakistan's most powerful constituency. But fresh graft allegations emerged when his children were named in the Panama Papers leak for holding offshore companies.

He was later convicted over separate corruption allegations and disqualified from office for life. It was the third time that he failed to complete a full term.

Less than a year into a seven-year prison sentence he was granted permission to travel to the United Kingdom for medical care and then declined to return.

But with Khan falling spectacularly out of favour with the military, Sharif's fortunes began to change last year.

His return has been smoothed by legal changes downsizing the period lawmakers can be barred from elections.

Analysts also say there has likely been a deal with the establishment to prevent further court challenges.

But the “Lion of Punjab” must also win over a population weary of dynastic politics and weighed down by economic crisis.

Big Relief for Nawaz Sharif as Pak Court Acquits Him in Avenfield Case Published 15 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 29, 2023

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday acquitted former Pakistan Prime Miniter Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield reference. The verdict was announced by a two-member bench on Nawaz's appeal against his conviction in the case.

In July 2018, an accountability court sentenced the PML-N supremo to rigorous imprisonment for a term of 10 years with a fine of £8 million in the Avenfield Apartments corruption reference for owning assets beyond known sources of income and an additional year for not cooperating with National Accountability Bureau (NAB), both of them to be served concurrently.

Nawaz, who was declared a proclaimed offender in December 2020, returned to Pakistan last month, seeking the restoration of his appeal. The IHC set aside the accountability court's verdict, citing a lack of evidence and legal flaws. Nawaz's lawyer argued that the prosecution failed to prove the link between Nawaz and the Avenfield properties. The court highlighted the suspension of Nawaz's sentence based on previous Supreme Court judgments.

The case revolves around the purchase of four flats in Avenfield House, London. Last year, the IHC had acquitted Nawaz's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, and her spouse, retired Capt Safdar, in the same case. The verdict holds significance in the context of PML-N supremo's political future and the ongoing legal battles.

Lareb Hashmi Stabbing

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Nov 27, 2023

Lareb Hashmi, the 20-year-old accused who has been arrested for attacking a bus conductor with a cleaver after a dispute in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, has revealed the reason for attacking the conductor.

The engineering student claimed that the dispute was over ticket fare and alleged that the conductor used “casteist” words.

The accused Lareb Hashmi also revealed that he follows the teachings of Pakistan's Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi. He said that though he has not met Rizvi in person but has seen him “on the internet”.

What Led to the Attack?

The incident took place on Friday when Hashmi took a cleaver to bus conductor Harikesh sending him to hospital with serious wounds. Hashmi was nabbed the same day later from Chandi village after a gunfire encounter with police during which he was shot in the leg.

The incident came to light when a video shot by Hashmi went viral on social media. “He was abusing a Muslim. Insha Allah he will not survive,” Hashmi says in the video referring to the bus conductor.

“Nobody should think that the government is of Modi and Yogi. Only Mustafa rules our hearts. Allah hu Akbar, Allah hu Akbar,” he said.

Who is Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi?

Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi was known for his fiery oratory in Urdu and Punjabi and his memorisation of Arabic verses from the Quran, which he often quotes in his speeches.

Rizvi memorised the Quran and was an ardent follower of the Islamic theologian Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, who was born in Bareilly, UP in the 19th century and founded the Barelvi school of thought.

Rizvi was the head of a religio-political party Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), a radical grouping of the Barelvi sect among Sunni Muslims. He, however, weaponised Barelvism in a way unparalleled in the subcontinent in recent history.

Rizvi has been confined to a wheelchair since 2006 ever since an accident near Gujranwala. He died in 2020 at the age of 54 due to an unknown cause.

The wheelchair-bound preacher was also a former Pakistan government employee and hails from Attock district in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

How Khadim Rizvi Shot to Prominence?

Khadim Rizvi shot to prominence when he resigned from his government job to lead the charge against the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and governor of Punjab Salmaan Taseer.

He smeared Taseer for committing blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad and called for the governor's death.

Taseer, a prominent name in Pakistan, was pleading for mercy on behalf of Asia Bibi, who was famously accused of blasphemy and languishing in prison. In 2011, a policeman from the governor's security Mumtaz Qadri, inspired by Rizvi, shot and killed Taseer.

Khadim Rizvi's Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan magnified the slogan ‘Sar Tan Se Juda' among the masses of Pakistan to shield Qadri for the murder of Salman Taseer.

?Sar Tan Se Juda? Slogans in India

The slogan – ‘Sar Tan Se Juda', which has been raised in several protests across India in the past few years, traces its roots to Moulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi.

Rizvi has often invoked “Man Sabba Nabiyan Faqtolohu”, which translates into “Whoever Insults a Prophet, Kill him”. During his rallies, he would raise a question to the audience during the mass demonstrations, “Gustakh-e-Rasool ki Ek hi Saza?” (What's the only punishment for the Blasphemer?) to which the protestors would respond by chanting “Sar Tan Se Juda, Sar Tan Se Juda”.

Later, his followers normalised the slogan through YouTube videos and popularised it in protests. The slogans were also raised during the protests against BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her remarks against the Prophet and in Hyderabad during protests against Raja Singh's derogatory remarks.

Champions Trophy to be shifted out of Pakistan or held in hybrid model

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Nov 27, 2023

The 2025 edition of Champions Trophy, the second biggest multilateral One-Day International (ODI) cricket tournament after the World Cup, would be shifted out of Pakistan or played under hybrid model, reports said on November 27.

The tournament could be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), or played under an Asia Cup-like hybrid model with matches scheduled in both the countries, the media reports claimed.

Livemint could not independently verify the development.

Pakistan is currently scheduled to host the Champions Trophy 2025, but speculations are rife that the International Cricket Council (ICC) may come out with an alternative plan as India may decide against sending its national team to the neighbouring nation due to political and security reasons.

A similar scenario emerged during the recently held Asia Cup, which was originally scheduled in Pakistan. However, after India decided against sending its team to the country, the tournament was held under hybrid model in Sri Lanka.

Four Asia Cup matches were played in Pakistan, whereas, the remainder of the tournament was held in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has urged the ICC to sign the Champions Trophy 2025 hosting rights agreements with it, stressing that the PCB should be compensated if India refuse to travel to the country citing political and security reasons, reports said on November 26.

A highly reliable source in the PCB told news agency PTI that while the ICC has marked Pakistan as the host of the tournament, the global body is yet to sign the important hosting agreement with it.

The source reportedly disclosed that PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf and COO Salman Naseer had met the ICC executive board in Ahmedabad to discuss the hosting of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February-March, 2025.

“Pakistani officials discussed the probability of the Indian board (BCCI) again refusing to send its team to Pakistan and made it clear that in any given situation the ICC must avoid taking unilateral decisions on the tournament," the person was quoted as saying.

He said the PCB officials had told ICC that if India refuses to play in Pakistan on security grounds, the global body should appoint an independent security agency.

The PCB further said the agency could liaison with Pakistan government and security officials to assess the security situation of the participating teams including India.

“The PCB officials said many top teams had toured Pakistan in the last two years without any security concerns.

“They also made it clear that in case of India not sending its team and its matches being moved to another country, then the ICC must compensate Pakistan for this," the source was further quoted as saying.

In a video that has gone viral Pakistan cricketer Hasan Ali is seen involved in a fun wrestling match with team masseur Malang Ali. The video was uploaded by Sports Paktv on their YouTube channel.

Pakistan Test squad will tour Australia for three Test matches scheduled from December 14 to January 7, 2024. Following the recent ICC World Cup 2023, Pakistani cricket has seen many changes, including the departure of Babar Azam in his role as captain.

Shan Masood will be leading the side in his first assignment as Test captain. He was named Pakistan's captain for the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle after taking over the reins from Babar Azam last week.

Left-handed opening batter Saim Ayub and right-arm fast bowler Khurram Shahzad have earned maiden Test call-ups for the three-match series.

Pace bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who last appeared in Tests for Pakistan during England's tour of Pakistan in late 2022, has returned to the squad.

Left-arm pacer Mir Hamza, who registered 32 wickets at 20.88 in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24, and right-arm pacer Mohammad Wasim Jnr are making a return to the squad as well.

The two fast bowlers were part of Pakistan's squad during New Zealand's tour of Pakistan that took place from December 2022 to January 2023.

"The squad has been assembled keeping in mind the challenging Australian conditions. We have kept the pitches in mind and added more pace bowling resources to the team to ensure that the management can be flexible with the team combinations in all three Test matches," Chief Selector Wahab Riaz said, according to an official statement.

"Saim Ayub has been added to the squad after the extraordinary domestic season he has had this year. He has impressed with the bat during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy and Pakistan Cup, pushing the case for his selection. His inclusion will strengthen our solid batting line-up," he added.

He said Pakistan has started off the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 really well, after their success in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

"We hope that the team can carry this momentum ahead in Australia as well. We have tried to ensure that the team has all relevant resources to find success in Australia," Riaz said.

Pakistan squad for Australia Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Pakistan Continues Crackdown on Hindu Temples

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 24, 2023

In yet another series of egregious human rights violations, authorities in Pakistan have reportedly targeted places of worship belonging to Hindus. The Hinglaj Mata Mandir (temple) in Sindh province became a victim of this crackdown on religious minorities, as officials in the Tharparkar District cited a court order to justify the demolition of this Hindu temple in the city of Mithi.

Adding to this, exclusive information from CNN News18 reveals the demolition of another Hindu site – the Sharda Peeth Mandir (temple) near the Line of Control (LOC). This action occurred despite a standing Supreme Court order aimed at protecting the temple. There are reports indicating the construction of a coffee house near the temple, scheduled for inauguration in November this year.

Top government sources acknowledge that such atrocities against Hindus are not isolated incidents in Pakistan. The community has faced persistent challenges, including targeted violence, killings, and encroachments on their lands. Local involvement in these acts, often followed by government endorsement, has been a recurring pattern.

Even the Sharda Peeth, recognised as a UNESCO site, did not escape destruction. The demolition contradicts international preservation efforts and raises questions about protecting cultural and religious heritage in the region. These incidents highlight the continued persecution faced by Hindus in the country.

Pakistan Cricket Board has named Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new white-ball captain, while Shan Masood will lead the men in green in Test matches. The appointment by the PCB comes after Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan captain in all three formats.

The 34-year-old Masood has played 30 Tests for Pakistan, scoring 1597 runs at an average of 28.52 with a highest score of 156. Afridi, meanwhile, has taken 104 and 64 wickets respectively in the 53 ODIs and 52 T20s he has played to date.

Afridi also has a proven track record as a captain, leading Lahore Qalandars to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) title in the 2022 and 2023 editions. The first challenge for Shan, who has been appointed skipper until the end of the ICC World Test Championship 2023, will be the three-match Test series against Australia starting on 14 December.Meanwhile, Shaheen will take over the captaincy for the first time in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand from 12-21 January.

Babar ends captaincy stint:

Soon after Babar's post stepping down from the captain's post, Shaheen Afridi wrote a heartfelt tribute to his skipper on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “(Babar Azam) under your exemplary leadership, it's been a privilege to witness true teamwork and camaraderie. Your forefront leadership and commitment to team unity and collective success are commendable. Looking forward to seeing you break more batting records, In sha Allah."

PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf also praised in an official statement, he wrote, "Babar Azam is truly a world-class player and we want him to continue to thrive as a player. He is one of the best batters Pakistan has ever produced. He is our asset, and we will continue to support him. His batting prowess is a testament to his dedication and skill. He is a role model for the present generation,"

"We want to see him grow as a great batter and now without his additional burden of the captaincy, he can focus more on his performances to reach even greater heights. We respect his decision and will continue to back him," the statement further noted.

Babar Azam steps down as Pakistan captain after World Cup debacle

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 15, 2023
ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistan's captain Babar Azam attends a practice session ahead of their 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup one-day international (ODI) match against England at the Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium in Kolkata (AFP)

ICC World Cup 2023: After a below-average performance in the ICC World Cup, Pakistan's Babar Azam has decided to step down as the captain of the team from all formats of the game. In a long post on social media platform X, Babar Azam said that it is a difficult decision but he feels that this is the right time for the call.

The decision comes as Pakistan couldn't perform up to its potential in ICC World Cup 2023 and the on-ground decisions of skipper Babar Azam were questioned multiple times. At the individual level, Babar Azam was not that great with his bat and scored 320 runs in 9 matches of the tournament.

“I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I've experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world. Reaching the number 1 spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I'd like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey," the former Pakistan skipper said in a long post on X.

?Here to support the new captain?

While announcing his decision to step down as the skipper of the Pakistan cricket team, Babar Azam said he was present to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication. The batter then thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board for the responsibility.

PCB likely to sack entire set of foreign coaches after World Cup debacle

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Nov 14, 2023
FILE - Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf. (AP Photo/B.K. Bangash, File) (AP)

With Pakistani skipper Babar Azam's captaincy hanging like a pendulum after post dismal performance in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, another report surfaced that the Pakistan Cricket Board may sack its entire group of foreign support staff members.

Pakistan head coach Grant Bradburn, team director Mickey Arthur, and batting coach Andrew Puttick will likely be released after the team's disappointing show in the World Cup 2023 in India, as per Pakistani news channel Samaa TV.

Apart from this, the report added that the PCB chief Zaka Ashraf is set to hold an emergency meeting with former captain Younis Khan on Tuesday and announce the decision, quoted HT.

Review meeting:

The PCB members will review Pakistan's poor show in the ongoing ICC Men's World Cup tournament, where Babar Azam-led Pakistan managed to win only four of their nine league fixtures. They failed to book a semi-final spot and finished fifth in the points table.

It is worth noting that this was the second ODI World Cup in a row where Pakistan failed to advance beyond the group stages. Also, in the 2015 World Cup, they were stopped in the quarter-finals.

Umar Gul to replace Morne Morkel:

Earlier on 13 November, Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel quit. Pakistan had reshuffled their coaching staff earlier this year with Morkel, Arthur, Bradburn, and Puttick.

Babar Azam praises Indian hospitality:

Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Babar Azam was happy with the love and support his team received in the host country.

The Pakistani skipper said, "To be honest - first I got a lot of love from India, a lot of support. Not only me, but the entire team. Of course, I was not able to get a good finish. My goal was to get a good finish in the batting. I didn't have a goal to score 50 or 100. The main thing was to make the winning team. The performance that helps the team, not my individual performance. I played slow, I played fast, depending on the situation. I play according to the situation and according to what my team needs."

Ex-Pakistan's allrounder gets trolled for 'controversial' Aishwarya remarks

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 14, 2023
Abdul Razzaq during a press conference (Screengrab) (X/@AskAnshul)

After the dismal performance by the Pakistani cricket team in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, where they failed to book a semifinal seat, former Pakistan cricketer Abdul Razzaq stooped very low and compared with a reference to Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Razzaq, while hitting out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s intentions, shelled out a bizarre example, mentioning the name of Aishwarya.

Speaking at a press conference, where former players like Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi were also present, Razzaq said, “Here, I am referring to their (PCB's) intention. While I was playing, I was aware of my captain Younis Khan's good intentions. That gave me strength and confidence, and with Allah's help, I was able to perform well for Pakistani cricket."

He added, while elaborating more, “We don't really intend to improve and enhance the players, in my opinion. That will never happen if you believe that I will marry Aishwarya (Rai) to have a good-natured and moral child. Therefore, you must first amend your intentions."

To much surprise, Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul were seen smiling and clapping after Razzaq's controversial remarks.

Captaincy does matter

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 13, 2023

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is in the headlines following the team's dismal performance in the ICC Men's Cup 2023, where they finished fifth and lost a semifinal spot for the third time in a row.

Apart from this, it happened for the first time Pakistan lost five matches in a single World Cup edition, including four of which took place consecutively.

Though Babar received an amount of backing from former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja, who called for a 'change in the system' rather than the captain, former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir launched a fiery rant on Raza.

ALSO READ: 'You can't make Babar scapegoat': Wasim Akram blasts critics blames faulty Pakistan cricket system

Disagreeing with Raza's call for a 'change in the system', Amir, during a show ‘Haarana Mana Hay' on Geo news, Amit hit out at both Raza and Babar saying captaincy matters more than what the members of the PCB management comprises of. Amir even gave examples of Pakistan's 1992 World Cup win under Imran Khan, 2009 T20 World Cup victory, and win over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.

“Captaincy does matter. What is the system? It is not a wall. Five and six people have been given the responsibility to run Pakistan cricket. A captain is also one of them. In 1992 under Imran Khan, we won the World Cup, and the system was the same. In 1999 our team was a world-beater, who reached the finals. We won the 2009 T20 World Cup with the same system, and we won the 2017 Champions Trophy under the same system," HT quoted Geo News where Amir made his comments.

ALSO READ: ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistan's Babar Azam all set to relinquish captaincy in white-ball format, details here

Apart from this, the former Pakistani pacer cited the example of how England managed to bounce back from a horrible 2015 World Cup exit to win the trophy in 2019 under Eoin Morgan.

“Babar is captain for the past four years. He has built his team on his own. Buttler is not part of our system, so why did England play so badly? Does the system in England also need a makeover? After the 2015 debacle, Morgan said I want to play this brand of cricket, I want these 25 players. The system remained the same, it was the captain, who changed his mindset. England were struggling in Test cricket for two years. Joe Root was the captain. The system is the same but we say England's Test cricket has changed. It was Ben Stokes, who changed his approach," he said.

“As long as the captain's mindset will not change, the system can do nothing. Was it the system, who told him not to play Abrar Ahmad, or bench Fakhar after the first match," Amir added.

Mentions Dhoni:

Amir even mentioned former Indian skipper and legendary player Mahendra Singh Dhoni to elaborate his point on how the latter shaped Ravindra Jadeja to be one of the leading all-rounders across formats.

“We say Dhoni changed India's cricket, but he never changed the system. People kept saying that for how long he kept giving Jadeja and Ashwin chances. And now we say Jadeja is the World's best all-rounder. MS Dhoni has given them the team," said Amir.
