Super Fog’ in US

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Oct 25, 2023

The toll from a series of crashes on a Louisiana interstate rose to eight dead and 63 injured Tuesday evening, a day after a “super fog” of marsh fire smoke and dense fog snared more than 160 vehicles in the fiery pileup, authorities said.

Lance Scott was among the many drivers caught in the wreckage on Interstate 55 west of New Orleans. The 51-year-old had been driving his daughter to the airport Monday morning when the fog thickened like a “white-out on a ski slope.” He slammed on his brakes, narrowly avoiding the cars in front of him while hearing “the most horrendous clank of metal” behind him.

“It was, ‘Bang. Bang. Bang.' It just went on… for probably 45 seconds,” Scott said. “As every second went by the clanking of the metal got a little bit fainter, which told me it was backing up — so I knew there was layers and layers of collisions.”

Scott turned to his 24-year-old daughter, an intensive care unit nurse, and said to her, “There's going to be a lot of people who need help and I need you to go out and do what you do.”

Amid the ominous crackling of flames in the wreckage, the fog slowly lifted afterward to reveal the extent of the pileup. Scott and his daughter helped people out of their cars, some with noticeably broken collarbones. One had to wait for first responders to bring the Jaws of Life.

An estimated 168 vehicles were involved in the crashes, Louisiana State Police said. By Tuesday evening the number of fatalities had increased from seven to eight and the number of reported injured more than doubled, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.

At least 63 people were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to critical, others sought medical aid on their own, authorities said in the update.

It is unclear whether it was the most significant crash ever handled by Louisiana State Police, given the number of vehicles and fatalities involved, state police Sgt. Kate Stegall told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

“However, I can tell you that this is an extensive and devastating incident, resulting in loss of lives and profound repercussions for both the community and first responders,” Stegall said.

The crashes began before 9 a.m. Monday along a one-mile (1.6-kilometer) stretch of the elevated interstate, which passes over swamp and open water between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, State Police Sgt. Kate Stegall said in a news briefing.

The crashes left a long stretch of mangled and scorched cars, trucks and tractor-trailers. Crushed vehicles were piled atop each other, blackened by flames. Some people got out of their vehicles and stood on the side of the road or on the roofs of their cars looking on in disbelief at the disaster. Others cried out for help.

Scott said there was “great camaraderie” as people sprang into action, helping others. With drivers warning others about a nearby fire from the crash, people moved away from the wreckage. They waited for 45 minutes for paramedics to reach them and for transportation off the bridge.

Clarencia Patterson Reed, 46, was driving to Manchac with her wife and niece and saw people waving for her to stop, but once she stopped, two other vehicles hit her car from behind and the side, she told The Associated Press. Patterson Reed escaped from her side of the car, but her wife was pinned inside, her side and a leg injured. Others stepped in to help, she said.

“I just thank God,” she said. “There was a casualty a few cars ahead of us.”

Another driver Christopher Coll, said he was already braking when a pickup truck “drove up on top of my work trailer and took me for a ride.”

Coll could smell smoke as he heard cars crashing and tires popping. He was able to kick open his passenger door to escape and then helped others — pulling one person out a car window.

School buses were summoned to transport stranded motorists from the accident sites.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards asked for prayers “for those hurt and killed” Monday and issued a call for blood donors.

Crews removed the last vehicles Tuesday afternoon and began a cleanup of debris, diesel and other chemicals littering the area, authorities said. Additionally, the state's transportation department identified multiple areas requiring bridge repairs as inspections continued.

The National Weather Service said there were multiple wetland fires in the region Monday and smoke from the fires mixed with fog to create a “super fog.”

Parts of the highway reopened Tuesday afternoon. But hazardous driving conditions Tuesday morning prompted several schools in the area to close or delay openings as tow trucks continued to haul debris off of the interstate.

Urge Strict Action

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

A prominent US Sikh body has condemned the heckling of India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu during a visit to a New York gurdwara and urged the shrine's management to take strict action against miscreants involved in the incident.

On Sunday, Ambassador Sandhu offered prayers at the Hicksville gurdwara in Long Island, New York on the occasion of Gurpurab. During his visit to the gurdwara, a group of Khalistani supporters made remarks about Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, killed in Canada in June this year, according to videos of the incident circulating on social media. The hecklers were later escorted out by members of the Sikh community.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sikhs of America said gurdwaras are places of worship and should be free from personal political views. “We urge the management of the Gurdwara Sahib to take strict actions against these miscreants so that peace-loving Sikh Community in New York can come to gurdwaras freely without any fear or pressure,” Sikhs of America's founder and chairman Jasdip Singh Jassee and its president Kanwaljit Singh Soni, was quoted as saying by PTI, in the joint statement.

“Ambassador Sandhu went to Gurdwara Sahib to pray and the management of Gurdwara Sahib honoured him with Saropa Sahib. After that, a handful of miscreants tried to disrespect him and violated the peace and sanctity of the Gurdwara Sahib. Gurdwaras are places of worship and should be free from personal political views,” the statement said. “Sikhs of America, the leading Sikh organisation in the USA, strongly condemns the disrespect of a Sikh devotee, Ambassador of India to USA Taranjit Singh Sandhu in a Gurdwara in Long Island, NY yesterday,” it said.

Ambassador Sandhu, who received a warm welcome at the Hicksville gurdwara against the perceived notion of opposition from Khalistanis, spoke about the historical linkages between Sikh Gurus, Sikhs, and Afghanistan. In his speech, Sandhu highlighted growth in the India-US partnership across healthcare, energy, IT, new emerging technologies, semiconductor and education sectors.

Khalistanis ‘Heckle' Indian Envoy at US Gurdwara? As BJP Leaders React, Here's What Sources Say

After the video of the ‘heckling' incident went viral on social media, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa denounced the incident, stating that these ‘goons' who disrespected the grandson of a great 20th-century Sikh leader are ‘not Sikhs.' BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh revealed that the pro-Khalistan supporter who was involved in the incident at Hicksville Gurdwara was in fact the President of Surrey Gurdwara and the coordinator for the Canadian Chapter of the Khalistan Referendum.

Dutch Firebrand Wilders Faces Crisis as Appointed Scout Resigns Over Fraud Allegations Published 18 minutes ago

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 27, 2023

Far-right Dutch firebrand Geert Wilders suffered a major blow Monday, as his handpicked “scout” to oversee coalition talks quit over fraud allegations, throwing the fraught process into chaos before negotiations had even begun.

Leaders in Europe and around the world are closely watching to see if Wilders and his PVV Freedom Party can form a government with partners wary of his strident anti-Islam, anti-immigrant and anti-EU views. Wilders pulled off a political earthquake on Wednesday with a shock election win, clinching 37 seats in the 150-seat parliament and putting him in pole position to replace Mark Rutte as prime minister.

But there was immediate turmoil as the “scout” Wilders appointed to shuttle between party leaders to clinch a deal stepped down after media reports surfaced over alleged graft at a past company. The “unrest” surrounding the reports and the time required to respond properly “do not go well together with my work as the scout,” said Gom van Strien, a PVV senator.

“I have therefore told Geert Wilders and the chairwoman of the parliament that I have resigned my position as scout with immediate effect,” said Van Strien. Van Strien was supposed to begin the formal task of forming a coalition later Monday, meeting the top party leaders, starting with Wilders himself. The meetings were later scrapped.

The NRC daily had reported on Sunday that a former employer of van Strien, Utrecht Holdings, had filed a police report about fraud allegedly carried out by the senator and other colleagues. Van Strien denounced the allegations as “unfounded” and said he had “complied with all laws and regulations”, vowing initially to soldier on, but the pressure apparently became too great.

“Not my dream start,” admitted the far-right leader, who had been in bullish mood at the weekend, writing that he would be “prime minister of this beautiful country.” He said he already had a replacement as scout in mind “with more distance from politics”, hoping to announce an appointment on Tuesday. “I don't find it very pleasant that I was not informed” about the fraud allegations, said Wilders.

Lower House chairwoman Vera Bergkamp said it was “annoying to start the scout process in this way” and urged a new candidate to be appointed as soon as possible. Even before the turmoil of the resignation, Wilders had already faced an uphill battle to build a coalition.

While he has repeatedly stressed his willingness to moderate his extreme views, the PVV manifesto calls for a ban on mosques, Korans, and headscarves, plus a referendum on leaving the European Union. His preferred coalition is with the BBB farmers party (seven seats), the pro-reform NSC party of Pieter Omtzigt (20 seats) and the party currently in power, the centre-right VVD (24 seats).

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz has already ruled out serving in a cabinet under Wilders, but has indicated she would be willing to “support a centre-right coalition.” Yesilgoz, who lost 10 seats compared to the last election fought by VVD Prime Minister Mark Rutte, has come under pressure even from inside her own party for this stance.

Wilders urged everyone to “come to the table to solve the problems of the Netherlands”, adding that a deal could be clinched “in a couple of weeks” if everyone was prepared to make compromises. However, most analysts do not expect a government to be formed until well into next year and the scout's sudden resignation will certainly slow the process down.

Never seen a PM…

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Nov 25, 2023

Former Indian cricketer Virendra Sehwag, while commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Indian dressing room following the World Cup final loss against Australia, said he has “never seen" any head of state offering this kind of moral support to a national team after their defeat.

The gesture by the prime minister will lift the morale of Indian players and encourage them to perform stronger in future tournaments, said Sehwag, who was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian squad.

“It is very rare for a prime minister to meet players in the dressing room and lift their spirits after a crushing defeat. I have never seen a prime minister taking time out of his busy schedule to lend a shoulder to players heartbroken after a defeat," Sehwag said on November 25, while speaking to news agency ANI.

“It was an incredible gesture by Prime Minister Modi to visit the dressing room and boost the morale of the boys. It was a time when the boys needed some hand-holding, a gesture of solidarity and support. In such lows, you need someone to comfort you like family members do. I believe it was a touching gesture that will go a long way to motivating our boys ahead of future engagements, especially multilateral events. It will motivate us to cross the final hurdle next time," the ICC Hall-of-Famer added.

India, which won 10 matches in a row in the recently concluded World Cup, lost in the final against Australia. The latter, headed by Pat Cummins, bagged its sixth ODI World Cup title.

In the final match played in Ahmedabad, where Modi was in attendance, India was put to bat first. The team was restricted to a below-par score of 240, which was chased down by Australia in 43 overs with six wickets in hand.

A section of Modi's critics, including his top political rival and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, took the “panauti (inauspicious)" jibe against the prime minister, linking him to India's defeat in the final.

“You don't lose a World Cup final because of any single individual. Our loss to Australia will spur us to chase glory in the next World Cup final," Sehwag was quoted as saying in the ANI report, in the context of critics linking Modi's attendance to the defeat in the World Cup final.

Nvidia delays launch of new AI chip in China amid US export rules

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Nov 25, 2023

Nvidia has informed its Chinese customers about a delay in the release of a new artificial intelligence (AI chip, as per a Reuters report citing sources. The chip, known as H20 is among a range of new products designed by the California-based chip giant to comply with tightened United States export regulations, it added.

Touted as the most potent among three China-targeted chips developed by Nvidia, the H20 faces a setback in its market debut. This delay may potentially impact Nvidia's competitive stance in China against local contenders such as Huawei, as per the report.

Also Read: Nvidia's AI boom almost blows past politics

Launch Rescheduled

While it was earlier expected to be unveiled as early as November 16, the H20's launch has been rescheduled for the first quarter of next year, sources told Reuters. One source hinted that the launch might occur in February or March.

Sources revealed that the postponement stemmed from challenges faced by server manufacturers in integrating the H20 chip into their systems. Alongside the H20, Nvidia has been strategising the launch of two other chips, the L20 and L2, to comply with the revised US export regulations. While the L20 remains unaffected by delays and is set for its original schedule, information regarding the status of the L2 remains undisclosed.

Also Read: Nvidia share price falls on downbeat China sales outlook

Nvidia has declined to comment, the report added.

Impact on Market Strategy

Nvidia's reliance on these chips as a means to retain its market presence in China became crucial after it was restricted from shipping products to China, including the advanced A800 and H800 AI chips, due to Washington's tightened export regulations.

Introduced as alternatives for Chinese consumers in November 2022, the H20, L20, and L2 incorporate many of Nvidia's latest AI features but have seen reductions in computing power to align with the new US regulations, as reported by SemiAnalysis.

Also Read: How Nvidia got huge and almost invincible

However, the export restrictions have provided openings for competitors such as Huawei to seize orders that would typically have been bagged by Nvidia. Case in point: Chinese tech giant Baidu reportedly placed a substantial order for Huawei AI chips, a move speculated to have occurred prior to the US export constraints, foreseeing potential limitations in procuring from Nvidia in the future.

Britain's Lloyds shake-up puts around 2

Britain's biggest high street bank Lloyds is putting around 2,500 jobs at risk as part of a shake-up, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, amid a renewed push by lenders to slash costs.

Lloyds is poised to begin a consultation with staff in a number of roles, including analysts and product managers, the source said, adding many would go through a selection process and it was unclear how many would ultimately be cut.

Staff are expected to be informed of the process as early as next week, the source said, adding it would also involve the creation of 120 roles.

The Guardian first reported on the process.

"We are evolving and transforming our business to ensure we can do more for our customers and deliver the products and services they need," a Lloyds spokesperson said, adding the bank was reviewing how teams worked without elaborating on potential cuts.

The news comes after Reuters reported on Thursday that Lloyds' rival Barclays is working on plans to save up to 1 billion pounds ($1.25 billion), which could involve cutting as many as 2,000 jobs.

Abdul Razzaq stoops to new low

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Nov 25, 2023
(File) Abdul Razzaq during a press conference (Screengrab) (X/@AskAnshul)

Days after comparing reference to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in his comments as Pakistan failed to reach the semi-final of ICC Men's World Cup 2023 and then apologizing for his controversial remark, former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq is in the news again. And this time too, for all the wrong reasons.

Razzaq launched a fresh tirade against the Indian cricket team after their defeat to Australia in the World Cup final.

Though several current and former cricketers have come out in support of the India team, Razzaq called India overconfident, accusing India of tampering with the pitch in Ahmedabad to their own advantage.

"Indians were over-confident. Cricket won and India lost. Had India won the World Cup, it would have been a very sad moment for the game. They used conditions to their advantage and I have never seen such a bad pitch for any ICC final before. It's great for cricket that India lost," Hindustan Times quoted Razzaq as saying on the Pakistani TV show 'Hasna Mana Hai'.

And again, this time too, he tried to prove his point by highlighting the two very contrasting semi-finals. He started by saying that the first one between India and New Zealand at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium proved to be a high-scoring game, while the second knockout in Kolkata's Eden Gardens was a little slower. He also accused that the surface used for the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium was something different though.

As per him, any team – pointing at India – that tried to make conditions more favourable towards them does not deserve to win anything, let alone the World Cup.

"Had India won, we would have felt very bad, because they were utilizing the conditions, one semi-final they scored 400, the other team scores 350. In the other semi-final, 220-230 runs were scored. Then in the final 240 runs were scored. That means there is something wrong (with the conditions). The pitches and the atmosphere should be fair. There should be fair pitches and, a fair atmosphere, both teams should have balance. Today also India took advantage. Had Kohli (Virat) scored 100, then India would have won the World Cup," he pointed out.

Will he apologize again?

After facing flak for drawing reference to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after Pakistan's World Cup exit, he apologized while appearing on Samaa TV, he said, “Yesterday, we were talking about cricket coaching and intentions. I had a slip of the tongue and mistakenly took Aishwarya Rai's name. I apologize to her personally. I did not intend to hurt anyone's sentiment."

ALSO READ: 'Very sorry, had a slip of tongue...': Ex-Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq on controversial remark on Aishwarya Rai

In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), he also wrote, “I am very ashamed of yesterday and I realize I said very bad words. I apologize to everyone, please forgive me."

Now the question arises, will he apologize again?

Wasim Akram, Sunil Gavaskar quashes 'pitch swapping':

Former India captain and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar labeled the accusations as 'pretty irrelevant'.

ALSO READ: Sunil Gavaskar hits out on 'pitch swapping' allegations by BCCI during WC, calls it 'pretty irrelevant'

"The accusation of BCCI interference in the selection of the pitches for India matches again was pretty irrelevant, as the ICC pitch consultant was around, and only after the ICC gave its approval was the match played on the pitch," NDTV Sports quoted Gavaskar writing in his column for Sportstar.

Apart from Gavaskar, legendary fast bowler and former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram had commented, as quoted by Cricaddictor, "It should be the last thing on the Indian Cricket Team's mind, I don't think that it will be in their conscience but if this is happening, it's credible news because someone has written a proper article and has mentioned the mail in that as well."

ALSO READ: Pakistan's cricket legends hail Indian team; Wasim Akram calls World Cup final ‘one bad day'

“The head groundsman of ICC, Atkinson said that the pitch number seven or whatever is a fresh pitch. The idea of a fresh pitch is to make sure that it doesn't favor anyone after winning the toss and that both teams get equal opportunities on the pitch. This pitch has already seen two matches, so I agree with you and I hope that the other panelists will agree that there is no need for this, it is just unnecessary. I don't know who is doing this, they have said so and they have their entire base covered," said Wasim Akram.
