China, US Appear to Restart Military Talks Despite Disputes Over Taiwan, South China Sea Published Just now

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Oct 26, 2023

China and the United States appear to be restarting dialogue between their militaries, despite continuing disputes over Beijing's claims to Taiwan and the South China Sea. Chinese reports, as yet not confirmed by Washington, say the US will send a Department of Defense official to attend a Chinese Defense Ministry international gathering that aims to discuss international security cooperation and raise China's status as a global power.

China attaches great importance to the development of military-to-military relations between China and the United States, ministry spokesperson Col. Wu Xian said at a briefing on Thursday, China froze military exchanges after then-speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi last August visited self-governing Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. China's annual Xiangshan Forum is scheduled for October 29-31. As we see it, the ranks of the personnel taking part in the exchanges are not the most important. What is more important are the contents of the exchanges, Wu said.

The comments came as China's top diplomat Wang Yi departed for Washington to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. That follows a series of high-level visits from the United States to China in recent months. In the latest sign of thawing ties, Blinken met Chinese President Xi Jinping, the leader of the ruling Communist Party, in Beijing in June. China had attributed its refusal to restart military communications to sanctions imposed by Washington, including a refusal to allow former defense minister Li Shangfu to visit the US. However, on Tuesday China announced the removal of Li as defense minister without giving any explanation or naming a replacement.

In answer to a reporter's question on Li's removal, Wu said: I suggest you pay attention to the release of authoritative information. Former foreign minister Qin Gang was also removed from office this year under circumstances that the government has yet to explain. China's highly opaque political system lends itself to heavy speculation around the reasons why officials are removed, mostly focusing on possible corruption, political differences, or violations of an unwritten code of personal conduct.

China on Thursday also released a video it said showed a close encounter between the Chinese navy and the USS Ralph Johnson, claiming the American destroyer harassed the navy's latest-generation type 052 destroyer Guilin while it was undergoing routine training in the South China Sea on August 19.

China claimed the USS Ralph Johnson took a sharp turn and accelerated, crossing the bow of the Chinese ship near the disputed Paracel Islands, which China calls Xisha. What the US side wants is to threaten China's national security with unrestricted provocation and nuisance against China Wu said, adding that the Chinese military is always on high alert and will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the sovereignty, security, and maritime rights of the nation. China claims almost all of the strategically vital South China Sea as its own territory. Neighbouring countries, including the US ally the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan also claim territory in the region.

What China’s $4

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Nov 28, 2023
In 2017, Sri Lanka?s government handed over the Hambantota Port to a state-owned Chinese firm on a 99-year lease (Photo: AFP)

Sri Lanka has paved the way for a $4.5 billion investment by China in Hambantota. The town, which also houses a port that was leased to a Chinese state-owned shipping company in 2017, is at the heart of India’s concerns about growing Chinese influence in New Delhi’s strategic backyard. Mint take a look at the announcement and its implication.

What exactly was announced?

Sri Lanka's energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera broke the news on Monday that China's Sinopec will be awarded a contract to establish a refinery at Hambantota Port. “Cabinet approval was granted today to award the contract to China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) of China, to enter into an agreement to establish a new Petroleum Refinery & Associated Product Processing center in Hambantota," Wijesekera posted on X.

This came after the country signed an agreement with Sinopec in May for the storage, distribution and sale of petroleum products. This was particularly important for Sri Lanka, given the energy shortages that have rocked the country in recent years.

Why is this announcement significant?

At the heart of this new development is China's growing influence in India's strategic backyard. China has become a major investor, trading partner and political player in the island nation in recent decades. Hambantota Port, which was financed with an estimated $1.3 billion of Chinese money, is seen as a key example of the lengths to which China will go to expand its influence.

Experts have suggested that the economic logic for building the port has always been weak. Some reports suggest it was built to shore up China's relationship with the Rajapaksa family, which has played a dominant role in the country's politics.

Whatever the case, the project ran up large debts and Sri Lanka's government eventually handed it over to a state-owned Chinese firm on a 99-year lease in lieu of those debts. This is seen as an instance of China's “debt-trap diplomacy".

What are India?s concerns?

New Delhi has a range of concerns about China's increased role in Sri Lanka. The first is that its economic presence gives it leverage over Sri Lanka's government. Experts also suggest that India has been concerned about the security implications of China's investments in Hambantota. Chinese vessels like the Yuan Wang V have docked at Hambantota Port, amid concerns that these ships are in the Indian Ocean to gather intelligence on India's military capabilities. Given that Sri Lanka is currently battling for its economic survival, China's role may continue to expand, as the latest investment from Sinopec suggests.

How has India reacted to China's growing ties with Sri Lanka?

India has stepped up its own efforts to become a ‘partner of first resort' for Sri Lanka. It approved a $4 billion economic rescue package for the country as its economic crisis worsened in 2022. It also played a key role in helping Sri Lanka secure a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. India has also unveiled a slew of new initiatives, including an energy pipeline, to alleviate some of Sri Lanka's resource constraints. It has also conveyed its concerns to Sri Lanka about China's military presence in the region.

Bigger bounties for independent directors as companies queue up

Posted By: Preeti Dabar Posted On: Nov 28, 2023
Companies are especially seeking non-independent directors with niche talent in digital and consumer behaviour, and an understanding of generative artificial intelligence. (Photo: iStock) (iStock)

Independent directors are in huge demand and companies are rewarding them handsomely with hefty pay hikes to be on their boards.

On average, the compensation of independent directors of 50 stock bellwethers increased by 15% between financial years 2017-18 and 2022-23, shows a Deloitte study shared exclusively with Mint. Independent directors on the boards of life sciences companies reaped the highest hikes, although those with IT services firms get paid the most, exceeding Rs1 crore in annual compensation.

Overall, four out of 10 independent directors now earn salaries beyond Rs1 crore, compared with just one out of 10 five years earlier, per Deloitte.

“Independent director remuneration increased 15% CAGR over the last 5 years to Rs58 lakh in FY2023 in Nifty50 companies," the audit firm says in its study titled ‘Independent Director Remuneration in India–Beyond the headlines'. “The average independent director remuneration is the lowest in Financial Services, while it is highest in (the) IT services sector."

Compensation for independent directors has surged over the past few years as companies scramble to recruit niche and skilled individuals to their boards, particularly as senior industry executives typically prefer joining “brag value boards", or boards of established companies. Demand for them has become urgent now, with more than 2,000 independent directors set to complete their tenures by April 2024.

Companies are especially seeking non-independent directors with niche talent in digital and consumer behaviour, and an understanding of generative artificial intelligence.

Information technology companies end up offering higher remuneration on average to their independent directors chiefly because they have four times more international hires than firms in other sectors. Compensation for these directors increased from Rs1.04 crore in FY2018 to Rs1.52 crore in the financial year gone by.

But it is the life sciences industry that has registered the sharpest spikes with companies keen to retain their independent directors. Average compensation for independent directors in the sector increased from about Rs30 lakh in FY2018 to Rs64.8 lakh in FY2022 and Rs70 lakh in the following year.

Directors in the financial services sector have had no such luck. Limits on remuneration (in addition to fees and expenses related to attending meetings) for non-executive directors at banks and insurance companies is capped by the Reserve Bank of India at Rs20 lakh. Independent directors fall under the subset of non-executive directors.

“Life Sciences, which is largely a promoter-led sector, witnessed the highest growth in independent director compensation as two companies introduced the component of commission in their remuneration structure compared to 2018," said Dinkar Pawan, director, human capital, at Deloitte.

Those two companies did not pay commissions to independent directors before the pandemic years but have started doing so since 2021, according to Deloitte. The consulting firm did not disclose individual company data.

An independent director's remuneration is largely dependent on a mix of fees for attending board meetings, called sitting fees, and commissions linked to a company's performance. While sitting fees are capped at Rs1 lakh, commissions are expected to increase.

“We expect that the pay mix will become more skewed towards commission in the coming years as more firms hit the sitting fee cap," said Pawan.

Currently, about 84% of a director's remuneration is in the form of commissions, with sitting fees accounting for the remaining pay; excluding banks and insurance companies, the commissions average about 89%.

The sitting fees are dependent on whether a director attends a regular board meeting or an audit/nomination/remuneration committee meeting. Per Deloitte's study, the median sitting fees for board meetings increased from Rs50,000 in FY2018 to Rs1 lakh in FY2023.

Establishing a well-defined and role-based remuneration structure, Pawan said, would increase transparency and help attract the right talent to meet the increasing demand for, and expectations from, independent directors.

IND vs AUS, 3rd T20I

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

Australia skipper Matthew Wade won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the third T20I match on Tuesday at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. India have already won the first two matches to take a 2-0 lead and one win on Tuesday will help them to seal the series.

The Australian bowlers will have a big task ahead of themselves to stop the in-form India's batting line-up to cross the 200-run mark in the third straight match.

Australia made few changes in their XI as Travis Head, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff got places in the side as several stars, who were part of the ODI World Cup-winning squad, returned to their home to manage their workload.

Skipper Wade said that the dew will affect the match right from the start and with time it will only get difficult for the bowlers.

“We will bowl. I don't think it matters a lot, dew should settle in early. We are not a 100% sure, but it's quite wet already and could only become a bigger factor. We were short in a couple of phases, but the boys are in good shape. We have a few going out after this game – Travis Head, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff,” Wade said at the toss.

Meanwhile, India made one change to their XI as Avesh Khan came in place of Mukesh Kumar who is getting married as skipper Suryakumar Yadav also wished him all the best for the biggest game of his life.

“Happy to bat first, not surprised with the dew coming along early. We just want to do the same thing, have the game plans and express ourselves. One change for us – Avesh replaces Mukesh, who is playing his biggest game, he's getting married and we wish him all the best,” Suryakumar said at the toss.

India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan(w), Suryakumar Yadav(c), Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna

Australia (Playing XI): Travis Head, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade(w/c), Nathan Ellis, Jason Behrendorff, Tanveer Sangha, Kane Richardson

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. (ANI)

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday drew parallels between Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the father of the nation as "mahapurush" of the last century and PM Modi as “yugpurush" of this century. He called them “two great personalities" while focusing on common things between them.

Addressing an event dedicated to Jain mystic and philosopher Shrimad Rajchandraji, Dhankhar said, “Mahatma Gandhi freed us from the slavery of the British through satyagraha and non-violence. India's successful Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken us to a path where we always wanted to be."

China Navy Ships Arrive in Myanmar for Joint Drills Amid Ongoing Border Conflict Published 4 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

Three Chinese navy ships have arrived in Myanmar for joint drills with its navy, the country's junta said, as a border conflict strains ties between the Southeast Asian nation and its most important ally.

A destroyer, frigate and a supply vessel carrying hundreds of sailors arrived at Thilawa port on Monday ahead of “naval security exercises between Myanmar and China”, the junta's information team said. It did not give details about the drills or when they would begin but state media reported the Chinese “naval task force” was 700 sailors strong.

Beijing is a major ally and arms supplier of Myanmar's junta and has refused to label its 2021 power grab a coup. Relations have been tested recently as the junta battles an alliance of ethnic minority groups across a swathe of territory near the China border. The junta has said the groups are using drones made in China in their offensive that has seized trade hubs and dozens of military outposts in northern Shan state.

Earlier this month protesters gathered at a rare demonstration in Yangon to accuse China of backing the armed groups, in what analysts say was a move sanctioned by junta authorities. Beijing has expressed “strong dissatisfaction” over the clashes in northern Shan state, home to oil and gas pipelines that supply China and a planned billion-dollar railway link.

China has said the fighting has caused Chinese “casualties” on its side of the border, without giving details. Beijing has also been frustrated by the junta's failure to crack down on online scam compounds in Myanmar's lawless borderlands that target Chinese citizens.

On Saturday, China kicked off military exercises near the Myanmar border, days after an attack on a compound in the Myanmar border hub of Muse destroyed more than one hundred vehicles. The offensive launched last month by an alliance of three ethnic minority armed groups has galvanised other opponents of the junta. Clashes have spread to the east and the west of the country and forced nearly 335,000 people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.

OnePlus 12 Teaser Shows New

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

While the device looks quite reminiscent of the outgoing OnePlus 11, upon closer inspection, one can observe that OnePlus' iconic feature—the Alert Slide—has switched positions. It is now found on the left side of the device instead of the right. For those uninitiated, the alert slider lets you quickly toggle between ring, silent, and vibrate modes. OnePlus has also stated why this move happened:“Based on internal testing, it has been determined that the optimal position for gaming antennas is between the forefingers of the user when the phone is held in landscape orientation,” the company notes.

As for the colourways, the new green colour features a pattern on the back that would remind you of forests, nature, and landscapes—and that's what OnePlus is using for their marketing as well. “Inspired by Nature,” OnePlus calls it.

The white looks almost pearlescent, and from the renders, it reminds us of the white titanium finish that Apple offers with its iPhone 15 Pro. The black, on the other hand, looks like the same old OnePlus we know—with the sandstone-like finish. You can watch the teaser here.

It has also been confirmed that the device would pack a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 64-megapixel 3X periscope telephoto lens. Coming to the chipset, the device will get the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

In addition, the OnePlus 12 will feature a QHD+ (1,440 x 3,168) AMOLED display made by BOE. It will support a peak brightness of 2600 nits, making it brighter than some recent flagships, including the iPhone 15 Pro (2000 nits) and the Pixel 8 Pro (2400 nits). Moreover, the display has received an A+ rating from DisplayMate. This panel is called the ‘X1 Oriental Screen.'

OnePlus India also updated its website yesterday with an image of the OnePlus 12 and the aforementioned trailer. This signals that the device may launch in India soon after the brand is done with the December 5 launch in China.

Suryakumar Yadav's India take on Matthew Wade's Australia in the third T20 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Assam on Tuesday. The Men in Blue have thrashed the Aussies in the last two matches and will be looking to seal the tournament with a win in the third T20 of the five-match series.

Surya-led India have looked energetic on the field and somewhat ultra-aggressive with the bat, following in their captain's footsteps. In their last encounter, the Indian side had handed Australia a comfortable 44-run defeat, buoyed by half-centuries from India's top three batsmen and later by the onslaught of left-hander Rinku Singh.

Another left-hander in the side, Tilak Varma, will be under the scanner in the 3rd T20 match as there may be changes in the Indian XI with Shreyas Iyer taking over the vice-captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad from the next match. Varma, who was out cheaply to Tanvir Sangha in the first game and barely got any time at the crease in the second, will be looking to make an impact in the third T20I to seal his place in the Indian XI.

India vs Australia 3rd T20: Fantasy XI

Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Josh Inglis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jason Behrendorff, Ravi Bishnoi

India vs Australia 3rd T20: Match prediction

As per Google's win probability, there is a 55% chance that India will win today.

Meanwhile, according to CricTracker, no matter who bats first, India will emerge victorious. MyKhel also says that India are likely to win and take an unassailable lead in the series. We believe the Men in Blue, who have looked the superior side in the series so far, will come out on top once again against a tired Aussie line-up.
