5 Killed in Attack on Police Station in Balochistan Province Published 21 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Oct 31, 2023

At least five people, including a policeman, were killed and two others injured on Tuesday in an attack on a police station by the militants in Pakistan's restive south-western Balochistan province.

Police said that about 20 militants attacked the Naseerabad Police Station in the Turbat area of the volatile province in the early morning.

District Police Officer Muhammad Baloch confirmed the attack, saying constables Essa and Hassan tried to engage the attackers but the former was killed while Hassan was overpowered. The attacker took possession of the weapons of the two policemen.

The other four killed in the attack were labourers who had come to spend the night at the police station due to fear of attack by the militants after gunmen had killed six workers in an attack on October 14 in Satellite Town of Turbat.

After the attack, the local authorities had asked the workers coming from outside of the province to stay at police stations during the night until the security situation improved.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Such attacks are carried out by the Baloch nationalists against the poor workers mostly belonging to the neighbouring Punjab province who come to the Balochistan province in search of work.

The Baloch extremists allege that the outsiders, especially from the Punjab, steal local jobs and resources and target them.

Balochistan caretaker Chief Minister Ali Mardan Khan Domki expressed regret over the deaths, terming the attack “condemnable and intolerable”.

“No religion in the world allows terrorism,” he said. “The killing of labourers is a sad incident and the involved elements will be brought to justice.” Balochistan, bordering Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency. Baloch insurgent groups have previously carried out several attacks targeting the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects in the region.

India vs South Africa

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Dec 09, 2023
The matches in the T20 and Test format will be most crucial for Team India

India vs South Africa: The stage is set for India's tour of South Africa and the young Indian team already reached Durban on 6 December. The series encompasses 3 T20 internationals from 10 December, 3 One Day Internationals (ODIs) from 17 December, and 2 Test matches from 26 December. The matches in the T20 and Test format will be most crucial for Team India ahead of the T20 World Cup next year and from the standpoint of the ICC World Test Championship.

'From 2000 match-fixing scandal to Tendulkar's suspension': 5 biggest India vs South Africa controversies

In the ICC World Cup 2023, India and South Africa displayed some strong performances, but both teams failed the finish the tournament due to visible shortcomings. As India embarks on another series in South Africa, let's have a look at the previous record, when India went away for the cricket series.

India vs South Africa: How previous tours spanned out for India?

1. 1992/93: Mohammed Azharuddin led India in the first tour of South Africa where both teams clashed in four Test matches and 7 ODIs. The results were not in favor of India as three matches were drawn, while South Africa managed to win one Test. In the ODI series, South Africa defeated India 5-2.

2. 1996/97: Similar results were seen in the subsequent Indian tour of South Africa as India lost the three-match Test series 2-0.

3. 2001/02: The results of 2001/02 were not different from the previous ones as India lost the three-match Test series 2-0 against South Africa.

4. 2006/07: It was in Johannesburg when things started changing for Team India. Owing to the stunning spell by Indian pacer S Sreesanth, Team India clinched the first-ever Test win in South Africa. India lost the Test series 1-2 and also the ODI series by 0-4 but still the performance raised hopes in Indian fans.

5. 2010/11: The Indian cricket team successfully managed to tame South Africa's Test talent during the 2010-11 tour. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India managed to equalize the Test series 1-1.

India's tour of South Africa: Full schedule, timing, squads and more

6. 2013/14: This was one of the most disastrous tours of South Africa by the Indian cricket team as the the Indian squad failed to win even a single game during that tour. India lost the ODI series 2-0 and Test series 1-0.

7. 2017/18: Under the leadership of young Virat Kohli, Team India embarked on another tour in South Africa and managed to clinch the ODI series this time. But, the team was still out of luck when it came to the Test series which the team lost 2-1.

8. 2021/22: This was the last time India and South Africa came across on South African soil and the Proteas continued their superiority in the Test format of the game as they again defeated India 2-1 during their last tour.

Junior Women's Hockey World Cup 2023

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Dec 08, 2023

India came from behind to outwit Korea 3-1 in the 9th-12th place classification match of the Junior women's hockey World Cup in Santiago (Chile).

Ropni Kumari (23rd minute), Mumtaz Khan (44th) and Annu (46th) scored for India, while Jiyun Choi (19th) was the goal-getter for Korea on Thursday.

In the opening quarter, Korea dominated possession and secured the first penalty corner, but they could not utilise the chance.

India, opting for counter-attacks, kept Korea's defence busy but couldn't convert their promising entries to the opposition circle, resulting to a goal-less deadlock after the first 1quarter.

The second quarter mirrored the intensity of the first, with India and Korea persisting in their attacking plays.

Choi broke the deadlock with a precise penalty corner strike, but India swiftly responded through Ropni, who equalized from another penalty corner.

Korea, desperate to regain the lead, ramped up their aggression. Despite their fervent efforts, India's solid defence thwarted Korea's advances and counter-attacked skillfully, keeping the pressure on their opponent's defensive line.

However, no more goals were scored in the second quarter as both teams entered the half-time break with the score levelled at 1-1.

In the third quarter, India dominated the proceedings by keeping possession and troubling Korea's defence rigorously. The strategy paid dividends as Mumtaz brilliantly slotted the ball home from a penalty corner to give her team the lead.

The penultimate quarter ended 2-1 in favour of India.

India intensified their attacks and extended their lead early in the fourth and final quarter of the game as Annu netted a superb field goal, securing a two-goal advantage for her team.

India continued to unsettle Korea's defence, maintaining their momentum and denying any chance of a comeback.

The victory means that India, who had earlier bowed out of the title contention after finishing third in Pool C, will stand a chance to finish ninth in the tournament when they take on either Chile or USA in their last match on Saturday.

Much has been said about the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad where hearts of a billion fan broke as Australia defeated India by 6 wickets in the finals of ICC World Cup 2023. The final game was played on the used pitch of Ahmedabad and behaved in a manner contrary to India's expectations. The development comes as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) faced intense backlash on choosing the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad for the final match. As per the reports, Australian skipper Pat Cummins raised some objection over the pitch, which was previously used for the India vs Pakistan match in World Cup fixtures.

After India lost the finals, former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said that India's pitch ploy has “backfired."

New York on 'High Alert' after Man Fires Shotgun Outside Synagogue Ahead of Jewish Holiday Updated 26 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Dec 08, 2023

A man was arrested in the New York capital of Albany on Thursday after firing a shotgun outside a synagogue, the state's governor said, instructing the police to be on high alert and increase existing patrols of at-risk sites. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred just hours before the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

The 28-year-old resident was seen “walking around outside the synagogue acting very suspicious, according to witnesses,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. He then “fired off a round from a shotgun while making threatening statements.”

“I'm directing @nyspolice and @NationalGuardNY to be on high alert and increase existing patrols of at-risk sites. Undermining public safety at a synagogue on the first night of Hanukkah is deplorable. New Yorkers stand united against antisemitism, hate, and violence in all forms,” Hochul wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The safety of Jewish New Yorkers is nonnegotiable,” Hochul said. “Every act, whether it's verbal or physical, any act of anti-Semitism is unacceptable.” New York rejects “hate, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia,” she said, adding that police would be on alert during Hanukkah.

Hochul and Eric Adams, mayor of New York City located some 150 kilometers to the south of Albany, participated in several demonstrations in support of Israel and Jewish Americans at the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Antisemitic incidents in the United States have risen significantly since war broke out in the Middle East after Palestinian Islamist outfit Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7. In October, a 400 percent rise was reported by US advocacy groups.

Virat Kohli likely to be excluded from T20 World Cup squad

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Dec 07, 2023
India's Virat Kohli reacts after losing the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 final match against Australia by 6 wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad (ICC Twitter)

T20 World Cup 2024: Virat Kohli has been India's best player in the last 15 years and is expected to surpass legendary Sachin Tendulkar in almost all cricket records. In ICC World Cup 2023 too, Virat Kohli displayed his class and slammed that highest 765 runs in the format which included 3 centuries. However, a recent report by the news platform Dainik Jagran informed that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is not sure about Virat Kohli's spot for the T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled for June next year.

India's tour of South Africa: Full schedule, timing, squads and more

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, and chairman of the selection panel Ajit Agarkar conducted a 5-hour meeting with the BCCI officials on the plans for the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled in the United States and West Indies. One clear problem that was in front of them is that Team India is playing very less T20s ahead of the World Cup.

India is set to start its South Africa series with three T20 internationals from 10 December and then the team will play three T20Is against Afghanistan in India. Senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah will stay away from the T20 series in South Africa.

Ishan Kishan on number 3

The report also mentioned that BCCI is considering Ishan Kishan for the number 3 position, on which Virat Kohli plays. The BCCI official present in the meeting told Dainik Jagran that they want someone, who can play attacking cricket at number 3 and Ishan Kishan has shown that multiple times.

Virat Kohli can surely make a space for himself if he plays wonderfully well in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but the only problem is that he opens for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), a position where BCCI is clear about keeping either Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal with skipper Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma to lead?

After Rohit Sharma asked for a break from the white ball format in the South Africa series, rumors were in the air that the Indian skipper is considering stepping down from the short formats of the game. But, as per the sources, the BCCI has asked Rohit Sharma to lead India in the T20 World Cup.

Welcome' Sign Prompts Closure of Afghan-Pak Border Crossing as Both Sides Argue Over Its Installation Updated 4 minutes ago

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Dec 06, 2023

A ‘Welcome to Pakistan' sign meant to greet travellers from Afghanistan instead caused the brief closure of the busiest frontier crossing on Wednesday, as officials on both sides argued over its installation. Pakistan and Afghanistan have had increasingly fraught relations in recent months, with Islamabad accusing the Taliban government of failing to root out militants staging attacks on Pakistan from Afghan soil — a claim Kabul has denied.

In response to the rising militancy, Islamabad has forced the deportation or voluntary transfer of Afghans it says are living illegally in the country, with more than 4,00,000 crossing over since October, as per the United Nations refugee agency. Both sides blamed the other for the latest shutdown of the Torkham border to vehicles.

The closure was caused by the “Taliban, who were unhappy with Pakistan's deportation policy” and “the installation of the billboard was just an excuse”, a senior Pakistan border official, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP.

However, Pakistan authorities later ordered the sign to be removed, as per officials on both sides. An AFP journalist on the Afghan side of the border also saw traffic flowing late in the afternoon.

Quraishi Badloon, from Nangarhar province's information and culture department, said the board was removed by Pakistan. “The Pakistani side agreed in talks not to install the new billboard,” he told AFP.

He said earlier there were suspicions the signage was being used as a guise to open a new gate encroaching across the border. The Torkham crossing — equidistant between Islamabad and Kabul — has been frequently shut this year, with tensions sometimes spilling over into armed clashes between border guards across the frontier.

Many of those leaving Pakistan for Afghanistan since Islamabad announced the migrant crackdown left through the Torkham crossing, a vital waypoint for trade between the countries. No government in Kabul has ever recognised the colonial-era demarcation between Afghanistan and Pakistan, leading to a long history of border disputes.

Seeds of Thought

World Soil Day is held every year on December 5 to raise awareness about soil health and how it is interconnected to the well-being of our ecosystem and agricultural production. This year, the theme of World Soil Day is “Soil and water, a source of life”.

In India, the issue of soil protection got a major boost after Jagadish Vasudev, popularly known as Sadguru, the founder of the non-profit Isha Foundation started the Save Soil Movement in March 2021.

Jagadish Vasudev launched the initiative by starting a 30,000 km long motorbike journey across 27 countries for over 100 days. The journey started from London on March 21 and ended on June 21 in India. Throughout his journey, he met important stakeholders and commoners and spoke to them about the cause of soil protection.

1. To reverse the threat of soil extinction, we must come together as one force. In the richness of the soil is the vitality of our life.

2. You cannot address climate change and sustainability without addressing the Soil. Soil is the core of all that is manifest.

3. The Earth and the Soil are living entities. It is my wish and my blessing that we act as one humanity to turn the situation around from the brink of disaster. Save Soil. Let us make it happen.

4. Agriculture can only thrive on rich soil – there is simply no other way. Regeneration of Soil is Invigoration of Life.

5. The Save Soil movement is a love affair with the land and life around us, not a fight with anyone.

6. Saving Soil is no different from loving life around you.

7. Soil is the mother of all mothers. Keeping the soil alive and passing it on that way to future generations is the way to know the power of Motherhood.

8. We are behaving as if we are the last generation on this planet. If we value life and the lives of future generations, we have to take care of our Soil and Water.

9. We must impart to every human being that soil, water, and air are not resources to be used and thrown away. These are life-making ingredients.

10. Our rivers and soil are being depleted at a dramatic pace. In the near future, we will not be able to feed our population and quench their thirst. The simplest and most effective solution is to increase the tree cover, and in turn, enrich the soil and replenish water bodies.

Celebrate World Soil Day 2023 by sharing your favourite Sadhguru quote on social media using #WorldSoilDay2023 and #SadhguruQuotes.

Chinese Real Estate Giant Evergrande’s Woes Grow as Court Postpones Debt Restructuring Hearing Published 3 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Dec 04, 2023

A Hong Kong court postponed until Jan. 29 a court hearing scheduled for Monday on troubled Chinese property developer Evergrande's winding-up petition.

Evergrande is trying to win support from its creditors for a plan to restructure more than $300 billion in debt to stave off liquidation. The company's lawyer told the court it was requesting an adjournment to “refine” its new debt restructuring plan.

The Hong Kong High Court has postponed the hearing over Evergrande's potential liquidation several times. Judge Linda Chan had said in October that Monday's hearing would be the last before a decision is handed down.

Evergrande could be ordered to liquidate if creditors reject its plan.

The company, the world's most indebted property developer, ran into trouble when Chinese regulators cracked down on excessive borrowing in the real estate sector.

Last month, the company said Chinese police were investigating Evergrande's chairman, Hui Ka Yan, for unspecified suspected crimes in the latest obstacle to the company's efforts to resolve its financial woes.

In September, Evergrande abandoned its initial debt restructuring scheme after authorities banned it from issuing new dollar bonds, which was a key part of its plan.

The company first defaulted on its financial obligations in 2021, just over a year after Beijing clamped down on lending to property developers in an effort to cool a property bubble.

Evergrande is one of the biggest developers to have defaulted on its debts. But others including Country Garden, China's largest real estate developer, have also run into trouble, their predicaments rippling through financial systems in and outside China.

The fallout from the property crisis has also affected China's shadow banking industry — institutions which provide financial services similar to banks but which operate outside of banking regulations.

Police are investigating Zhongzhi Enterprise Group, a major shadow bank in China that has lent billions in yuan (dollars) to property developers, after it said it was insolvent with up to $64 billion in liabilities.

Real estate drove China's economic boom, but developers borrowed heavily as they turned cities into forests of apartment and office towers. That has helped to push total corporate, government and household debt to the equivalent of more than 300% of annual economic output, unusually high for a middle-income country.

To prevent troubles spilling into the economy from the property sector, Chinese regulators reportedly have drafted a list of 50 developers eligible for financing support, among other measures meant to prop up the industry.
