Xi Jinping Tells Aus PM Albanese China

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Nov 06, 2023

Chinese leader Xi Jinping told Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Monday that their countries could become “trusting partners”, pledging to work with Canberra on everything from regional security to climate change as the two leaders eased years of tensions that cut billions of dollars in trade.

Beijing is Canberra's biggest trading partner, but relations plummeted in 2020 after Australia's then-conservative government barred Chinese tech giant Huawei from 5G contracts and called for an inquest into the origins of Covid-19, which was first detected in China.

A furious Beijing then slapped punitive tariffs on a slew of Australian commodities including coal, barley and wine as the relationship descended into a deep freeze.

But China has reversed course since Albanese took power in May last year, lifting most of its restrictions on Australian goods and saying it wants “healthy and stable” ties.

Meeting Albanese in Beijing on Monday, Xi said the two countries had “no fundamental conflict of interests”.

China and Australia, Xi said, could “become mutually trusting and mutually successful partners”, according to a readout of the meeting by state broadcaster CCTV.

“In the face of major changes in the world, the two sides should grasp the correct development direction for China-Australia relations,” he said.

This included cooperation on everything from “the peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region” to climate change, the Chinese leader said.

And in opening remarks shown by Australia's public broadcaster ABC, Albanese — the first Australian leader to visit China in more than seven years — hailed the “unquestionably very positive” progress in ties.

Since the two leaders met in Indonesia last year, Albanese told Xi, “trade is flowing more freely to the benefit of both our countries”.

“We can of course today take up the opportunity to explore how we can have further cooperation between our two countries,” he said.

Albanese has previously acknowledged the need to remain “clear-eyed” about the differences between the two countries.

“We need to cooperate with China where we can, disagree where we must, and engage in our national interest,” he told reporters Monday.

And China has bristled at Australia's security pact with the United States and Britain, and rebuked its decision to purchase nuclear-powered submarines — widely seen as an effort to parry Chinese military might in the Asia-Pacific.

Albanese has spoken up on behalf of nations' right to self-determination, as well as human rights and maintaining peace — including in the Taiwan Strait, which separates China from the self-ruled island it regards as part of its own territory.

But Xi on Monday told Albanese the two could work together on regional security challenges.

“Where there are efforts to cause disturbances in the Asia Pacific region, we must firstly stay vigilant, and secondly oppose them,” the Chinese leader said.

And in the South Pacific — where Canberra and Beijing have in recent years clashed over influence — Xi said China was willing to work with Australia to “support the strengthening of development”.

It also sought to cooperate on protecting “the peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region with openness and tolerance” and “tackle challenges including climate change”, he said.

But analysts say high-level meetings this week will see Beijing project itself as a “benevolent and benign partner” welcoming a wayward friend back to the fold.

“China won't want to dwell on criticisms of its economic coercion or hostage diplomacy,” Courtney Fung, scholar in residence with the Asia Society Australia, told AFP.

Analyst Yun Sun said Beijing would be keen to present “the trip as Australia recognising its previous mistakes”.

“It will portray Albanese as being on the right side of history and making the correct choice for the sake of (Australia's) economy, especially export industries, including its wine industry,” said Sun, of the Washington-based Stimson Center.

“That will be the Chinese narrative.”

Much has been said about the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad where hearts of a billion fan broke as Australia defeated India by 6 wickets in the finals of ICC World Cup 2023. The final game was played on the used pitch of Ahmedabad and behaved in a manner contrary to India's expectations. Amid the criticism around choosing a used pitch for the final match, International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed its rating for the Ahmedabad pitch.

The development comes as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) faced intense backlash on choosing the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad for the final match. As per the reports, Australian skipper Pat Cummins raised some objection over the pitch, which was previously used for the India vs Pakistan match in World Cup fixtures.

“I have so many wonderful memories of Melbourne, and of course winning the Australian Open is an all-time career highlight,” Wozniacki, who was ranked No. 242 this week, told Australian Open organizers on Wednesday.

Wozniacki won her only Grand Slam singles title in Australia two years before she left the sport in early 2020 to start a family. She spent time working as a TV analyst, and now she and former NBA player David Lee are the parents of two children.

Wozniacki said she planned to travel to the tournament at Melbourne Park with her daughter, Olivia, and her son, James.

Communist Party of China Under President Xi to Intensify Crackdown on Corruption Published 14 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Dec 04, 2023

China's ruling Communist Party headed by President Xi Jinping has warned of intensifying the crackdown against corruption, saying that despite the decade-long fight against the menace, the problem is prevalent among thousands of cadres and officials.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has been busy overseeing a massive anti-graft campaign since Xi assumed power in 2012 under which over a million officials including top military personnel were punished.

The intensity of the campaign also attracted criticism that Xi, 70, has made effective use of it to silence his critics and rivals within the party.

The CCDI said corruption was becoming harder to detect and its plan to extend the crackdown on extravagant government spending would be stepped up as the festive season, especially the Spring festival and Chinese New Year approaches.

During the festival season, Chinese officials in the past used to accept extravagant gifts to clear projects. In a post on its website and social media accounts on Monday, the CCDI said that in the first 10 months of the year, it investigated nearly 80,000 violations of the anti-extravagance regulations and some 114,238 people were placed under investigation and received a warning.

Of those, as many as 80,096 have faced party or administrative disciplinary action. The CCDI also said corruption was taking new forms and becoming harder to detect.

At present, the soil where unhealthy tendencies can thrive still exists, as does the risk of a rebound in corruption cases, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted CCDI as saying.

The anti-graft watchdog said the four forms of decadence had become better hidden or transformed and called for more investigation into the specific corruption activities taking place across regions and industries so that precise supervision could be carried out.

China uses four forms of decadence to describe formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance — the problems it considers to be the most prevalent among the tens of millions of party cadres and government officials in China.

In his work report submitted to the party's Central Committee in February, Li Xi, who heads the anti-corruption watchdog, vowed to crack down on wasteful expenditure by naming and shaming those responsible.

He said graft-busters would dig deeper to tackle new forms of corruption such as bribes delivered via AirDrop on smartphones, those given in the form of inflated fees for lectures or consultancy work, and extravagant gifts such as luxury wine, mooncakes and cigarettes.

Also, Xi, who is currently touring Shanghai, called for strong confidence in the country's political system and firm commitment to the leadership of the party to the state system of people's democratic dictatorship, and to the political system of people's congresses, all of which are mandated by the Constitution.

Xi, also the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party, emphasised the need to implement the thought on socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics for the new era.

He stressed efforts to accelerate the improvement of the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics with the Constitution at its core, and continuously enhance constitutional implementation and oversight.

Xi urged the vigorous promotion of the spirit of the Constitution and the spirit of socialist rule of law, ensuring the implementation of the Constitution as a conscious action of the Chinese people.

Matthew Wade struggles to accept defeat amid umpiring mistake

Posted By: Jogendra Kumar Posted On: Dec 04, 2023
India vs Australia, 5th T20: Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav greets Australian captain Matthew Wade after India won the 5th T20I cricket match against Australia, at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru (PTI)

India vs Australia, 5th T20: Team India pacer Arshdeep Singh bowled a thrilling final over and defended 9 runs as India snatched a certain win from Australia by 6 runs. With the win in the 5th T20, India displayed dominance as they won the series comprehensively 4-1. Australian skipper Matthew Wade was not happy with the results and said it was hard for him to wrap his head around the defeat. Some questions are also raised on the umpiring decision in India vs Australia 5th match especially during Arshdeep Singh's final over.

India vs Australia Highlights, 5th T20

It's hard to wrap my head around at the moment after not being able to get us home," Wade said of the loss. “I thought we bowled relatively well. We kept them to a total that probably should have been chased at this ground. It's pretty disappointing. It would have been nice to get the result tonight. I think 3-2 would have been a reflection of where the series was at.

Australian skipper is right when he says that his team bowled well. Team India's batting order collapsed against the fiery pace of Australia. The light rains changed the pitch conditions and the ball was not coming properly on the bat. Apart from Shreyas Iyer (53) and Axar Patel (31), no batter could do much significant on the pitch of Bengaluru.

Team India did well in the bowling with spinner Ravi Bishnoi 2/29 and pacer Mukesh Kumar 3/32 displaying their magic against the deep Australian batting lineup. It eventually came down to the last over when 10 runs were required and Matthew Wade was on strike.

Thrilling final over

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav introduced pacer Arshdeep Singh for the final over and the first ball of the final over was subject to intense discussions. Arshdeep Singh started with a bouncer and the ball sailed over Wade's head, but the umpire didn't give it wide. Matthew Wade expressed shock over the decision and was clearly not happy about it.

The Australian skipper then tried a big shot on the 2nd ball, but it landed straight in the hands of Shreyas Iyer. Arshdeep Singh managed the rest of the over well and India won by close margin of 6 runs. Matthew Wade said that Australia is looking forward to the T20 World Cup in June.

"There's always a temptation [to move up the order]; it was spoken about but looking forward to the World Cup. My job is to get us home in situations like tonight. It would've been nice to get the result, but we learn and I thought Ben McDermott bounced back, Behrendorff, Dwarshuis, and Sangha made an impact in tough conditions," added Wade.

India’s developing tech certifications presenting business opportunities

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Dec 04, 2023
Dell?s global chief technology officer John Roese.

New technology certifications and standards that are being developed in India are opening up fresh business opportunities for Dell Inc., Peter Marrs, the American hardware and services company’s president for Asia-Pacific and Japan, and John Roese, its global chief technology officer, said at a media roundtable on technology trend projections for the next year.

The rising adoption of zero trust in cybersecurity, practical implementations of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the emergence of multi-cloud edge platforms, and the development of quantum computing combined with generative AI will shape global enterprise technology adoption in the coming year, they added.

“India, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia are all building out certifications and cyber standards. We are excited at this opportunity and with our technology, we will help those customers," added Marrs.

India's developing technology certifications, regulations and standards include cybersecurity laws, besides social media intermediary guidelines announced last year, and the Digital Personal Data Privacy Act notified in August.

In November, union information technology (IT) minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said new regulations on AI deepfakes are also being drafted. The Digital India Act, which is also expected to add to technology legislations, is also being worked on, but work on drafting the law will be resumed by the “next government," said union minister of state for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, since it requires more consultations.

The spate of regulations may lead to more enterprise technology use cases, as more firms seek compliance support through technology service providers such as Dell. Another key theme, Roese said, will not only be restricted to generative AI business use cases, but across the entire spectrum of AI.

“AI is the centre of the universe and edges are the way to put it into production. Zero trust is the way to end up securing it, and ultimately quantum will be the thing to power it over the long term for the performance and efficiency needed to scale it into a global system. Actively think of AI, but do not do it independent of other architectures—this is how you'll make sure your visions and actions align for long-term success," he added.

The alignment of this vision will also translate into real-world business use cases for generative AI, with actual returns on investment for tech clients, Roese said. “While generative AI has sparked incredibly creative ideas of how it will transform business and the world, there are very few real-world, scaled generative AI activities. As we move into 2024, we will see the first wave of generative AI enterprise projects reach maturity levels that will expose important dimensions of the technology that are not yet understood in the early phases."

India's $245 billion IT services industry is currently making a significant wager on the development of genuine generative AI business cases.

All of India's top five IT service providers—Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), Infosys Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd, Wipro Ltd and Tech Mahindra Ltd—have made generative AI announcements, and disclosed ongoing pilot partnerships.

TCS, the largest of the five, said during its September quarter earnings call that it had over 250 pilot partnerships and had trained over 100,000 employees in new generative AI skills. Infosys, too, hinted at increasing generative AI use cases.

However, industry analysts argued that while pilot partnerships are steadily increasing, both service providers and tech clients are still experimenting with practical business use cases. As a result, despite increasing pilots, generative AI is not likely to help the IT services sector ramp up its revenue growth in what has so far been a weak financial year.

Roese's prediction, however, points at increasing maturity of generative AI through the next calendar year—something that technology service providers around the world will hope to be true.

Don't Forget he Averages 50 in Ranji Trophy

Posted By: Ajay Rawat Posted On: Dec 02, 2023

The Indian team management has gearing up for the future and plenty of youngsters and players on the fringes will now be given a chance across formats as they hope to find replacements for the ageing superstars.

Among the names that has caught the eye is a certain Rinku Singh who continues to impress with his impressive finishing skills but on Friday, he showed another side to his game by batting deep after walking in early against Australia during the 4th T20I in Raipur.

Before he his 29-ball 46 propelled India to a match-winning total of 174/9, the 26-year-old was called up to their ODI squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa besides being part of the T20Is as well.

And former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra has reminded everyone that Rinku may be known more for his batting in T20s but he averages an excellent 57.82 in first-class cricket too underlining his temperament and skills to bat for long.

“People know Rinku Singh because of T20 but don't forget he averages around 50 in Ranji Trophy too,” Nehra said on JioCinema. “He's been called up to for the one-day squad too. Selectors must've seen something. He came in to bat early today. We have seen him bat in the death overs a lot of times but the way he played today deserves appreciation. He batted the way team needed him. At one point, it looked they could make 190 but if India would've lost Rinku at that stage, scoring 160 would have become a challenge too.”

“It's a big plus for India that they have selected him in 50-over format and today, he got a chance to bat early and he showed that (he can bat long),” he added.

India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs during the South Africa tour and Rinku will be hopeful of making his debut in the one-dayers having already proven his credentials in the shortest format.

BCCI seeks answers from Rohit Sharma

Posted By: Jaydatt Chaudhary Posted On: Dec 02, 2023
ICC World Cup 2023: Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Head Coach Rahul Dravid after India lost the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 final to Australia, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad (PTI)

ICC World Cup 2023: Team India fans are still recovering from the heartbreak they faced on 19 November after Australia defeated India in the ICC World Cup 2023 finals to lift the trophy. Team India, former cricketers, experts, and fans are all wondering about the things that went wrong in the last match of the tournament, where India did so well, winning all 10 matches before the final game. The Board of Control of Cricket (BCCI) decided to sit with Team India skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to mull over the possible reason behind the comprehensive 6-wicket defeat.

As per a report by news platform Dainik Jagran, before the announcement of India's squad for the South Africa tour, the senior officials of BCCI had a word with Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid about the possible reasons for India losing the final match despite doing so well in the tournament. Rohit Sharma joined the meeting through a video call as the Indian skipper is currently in London on a holiday.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, vice-president Rajeev Shukla, and Treasurer Ashish Shelar were part of the meeting as per the report.

The Pitch Factor

Team India coach Rahul Dravid mentioned the role played by the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad which didn't respond to their expectations and also made toss ‘deciding factor.' Rahul Dravid said that had the pitch gone their way, India would have successfully strangled Australia in the chase.

It is to be noted that the final match was played on a used pitch of Ahmedabad stadium, which is not usual. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) doesn't speak explicitly on the matter, usually the knockout stages of a tournament are played on fresh pitches, and used pitches are avoided due to their unpredictable behavior.

The pitch on which India played its final against Australia was the same pitch where Indian bowlers dominated Pakistan. To provide some assistance to spinners, the pitch was watered less but the decision backfired for India as the pitch didn't behave as expected during the first half of the final match.

BCCI officials questioned Rahul Dravid on the necessity of such plans when Indian pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were doing well, but the Indian coach explained that the same strategy worked for them throughout the tournament.

India Overtake Rivals Pakistan to Set New Record After They Clinch T20I Series Against Australia Published 19 minutes ago

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Dec 02, 2023

As India managed to seal the five-match T20I series against Australia thanks to the all-round efforts of various players. India will now head to the final game with nothing to lose as they have already clinched the series 3-1.

Team India has had a long history in the shortest format. They started in the T20 scene in 2006-07, where they went up against South Africa in a one-off game. The legendary opening batter, Virender Sehwag, led the side and since has come a long way.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni led a young Indian side into the inaugural edition of the World Cup as well where they went on to defeat Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup to become the first-ever champions in the format as well.

Since then India has gone on to play many more T20Is and after their win over Australia in Raipur managed to set a new record with the most wins in T20I history. India managed to pip their arch-rivals Pakistan to set a new record. The Indian side now stands at 136 T20I wins getting over Pakistan at 135 wins.

India was able to do this thanks to contributions from various players in the fourth T20I match. Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma managed to hold their own in the latter stages of the innings to push India to set a target of 175 runs for the Aussies.

Despite the quick start from Travis Head, the Indian spinners were able to dominate the proceedings from the powerplay to restrict the Australian side to just 154 runs. Bishnoi picked up the one-wicket for just 17 runs and Axar Patel was the star with the ball picking up three wickets which included the likes of Travis Head, Ben McDermott and Aaron Hardie for just 16 runs to help seal the series for India.

India will now travel to Bengaluru where they go against Australia for the final match of the series and will look to best prepare themselves for the T20 World Cup 2024 jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America where the Men in Blue will look to get their hands on the title which has eluded them since the inaugural edition.
