India Need More People To Take Up Sport For Bigger Olympic Success
Abhinav Bindra reckons that investing in just elite athletes will not make India a sporting superpower and if the country aspires to take its medals tally to double digits in the Olympics, more people need to enter the playing arenas and sport should not be looked at from the narrow prism of high performance.
India's top athletes have been receiving tremendous financial support from the government and corporate houses, of late, and the results have only got better as elite athletes get to train abroad and they now work with best support staff.
Bindra said the investment in just top level athletes will not suffice.
“If you want to get to 50 (Olympic medals), it is not just going to be pumping money into the elite (athletes). It is only going to be a very small percentage of your population that is going to get involved in sports, so you need more people to play,” Bindra said during the RCB Innovation Lab Leaders Meet here.

Bindra, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist in 10m air rifle, added that India was at a juncture where sport must become a mass movement now.
“The by-product of that hopefully will be that more people will be involved in sport. So I believe that the shift in perspective needs to happen and it needs to happen now.” The former world champion also said that for India to become a sporting nation, a “sustainable” and “thriving ecosystem” should be created where sport is not judged from the narrow lens of high performance.
“What I would really like to see India as a country is to start looking at sport more holistically and not singularly from the prism of high performance.
“It is a very narrow view and if you only look at it from a high-performance perspective, it will be very challenging to make that next leap from seven Olympic medals in Tokyo,” he said.
India had its best-ever tally at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics, where it returned home with seven medals, including a gold in javelin throw from Neeraj Chopra.

Bindra, 41, added that more that just celebrating India's success in major events, if the country could celebrate sports, it could bring about the “real change” in the ecosystem.
“Giving more opportunities to young people to simply enjoy sport is that to me an important element that has to be developed for the whole Olympic project. The number two point is developing an economy for the future. The whole country needs to be involved in not just celebrating Indian success but also celebrating sports.
“If you have that larger goal in mind and you have this more holistic thought process in mind, I think you come up with an interesting project that will not just be limited to the two weeks of sports, but to how the Olympic Games can truly be the driver for real change,” he said referring to India's endeavour towards hosting 2036 Olympic Games.
On RCB Innovation Lab creating a platform for a dialogue on sports, Bindra said, “Event like these bring experts from all over the world to ideate, which in turn make one aware of the “newest global trends, and opportunities that exist”.

Shane MacGowan, songwriter and lead singer of Celtic folk-punk band The Pogues, died early Thursday at the age of 65 after a long illness, his widow announced.
Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me... has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese," wrote MacGowan's widow Victoria Mary Clarke in an Instagram post. Later, the band said on its official website that "Shane died peacefully at 3.30 am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife and sister by his side.
MacGowan, who had been in and out of hospital in Dublin since July, is most famous for penning the Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York", a duet sung with Kirsty MacColl in 1987.
Co-formed by MacGowan, the Pogues fused punk and Irish folk music. He was born in England but spent much of his childhood in Ireland with his mother's family.
The band became an international symbol of Irishness, both at home and for the sprawling diaspora, with MacGowan's contribution recognised in a slew of tributes from political leaders.
"Shane will be remembered as one of music's greatest lyricists," Irish President Michael D. Higgins said in a statement.
"So many of his songs would be perfectly crafted poems, if that would not have deprived us of the opportunity to hear him sing them," he said.
Taoiseach (prime minister) Leo Varadkar called MacGowan "an amazing musician and artist".
"His songs beautifully captured the Irish experience, especially the experience of being Irish abroad," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Micheal Martin, Varadkar's deputy, said he was "devastated" by MacGowan's death, calling him "iconic".
"His passing is particularly poignant at this time of year as we listen to Fairytale of New York -- a song that resonates with all of us," he wrote.
There were tributes too from Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army paramilitary group which fought for decades against British rule in Northern Ireland.
The Pogues' 1988 song "Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six", which recounted the plight of six Irishmen wrongly imprisoned for deadly pub bombings in Birmingham, was banned from British airwaves.
The 1974 attacks that killed 21 and left scores more injured were blamed on the IRA.
The Birmingham Six saw their convictions quashed on appeal in 1991.
Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald called MacGowan "a poet, dreamer and social justice champion".
"He was a republican and a proud Irish man. Nobody told the Irish story like Shane. He sang to us of dreams and captured stories of emigration," she said.
Her predecessor Gerry Adams a central figure in "The Troubles" and a close friend of MacGowan and Clarke said: "Ireland has lost a great patriot, a poet and friend of the down-trodden and marginalised."

Matthew Perry, who shot to fame for playing Chandler Bing on the hit NBC sitcom 'Friends', was found dead at his Los Angeles home last month. He was 54 years old. His cause of death remains "deferred" after an initial postmortem showed no signs of meth or fentanyl in his system.
Now, a month after his stepson's tragic death, Mr Morrison on Monday took to social media to honour the late actor. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Dateline correspondent encouraged people to donate to the Matthew Perry Foundation in celebration of Giving Tuesday. "This is not the sort of thing I commonly do, this pitch. But this year is different," Mr Morrison wrote. "And tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. Do what you can; he would have been grateful," he continued before including a link to the website for the Matthew Perry Foundation - a charity for those "struggling with the disease of addiction".

Husky can’t control her excitement as pet dad sings DuckTales theme song
Social media is filled with videos of dogs reacting to their favourite things. You may have seen pooches getting excited over toys, balls, films, and even sticks. However, have you ever seen a dog unable to control her emotions because of a cartoon song? Meet Leia, a husky who gets super excited when her pet dad sings the theme song of DuckTales for her.
A video of Leia was shared on Instagram earlier this year on an Instagram page dedicated to her and her pet sibling, Archer. The video was posted with the caption, “Your husky's biggest trigger is the late 1980s / early 1990s cartoon jingles”.
The video is creating a stir after recently being shared on Reddit. It shows a dog standing on what appears to be a portico. Her pet dad is heard saying, “I don't know what you want Leia”. At this point, the dog calmly stands and keeps looking at her pet dad. However, as soon as he starts singing the theme song for DuckTales, the scene instantly changes.
Leia gets excited and jumps around. She even ignores her doggo brother standing next to her. At one point, the dog also runs to the backyard to calm herself. However, she again starts her zoomies once her pet dad continues singing.
The video was posted a day ago. Since then, it has collected close to 1,600 upvotes. The share has further accumulated several comments from people.
“Oh man, you're actually a pretty damn good singer. That was hilarious. Huskies are easily the goofiest of dogs,” wrote a Reddit user. “This is so cute! We sing to our dogs as well and I think it's something about us being happy and the pitch of our voice that makes them happy as well,” shared another. “Omg, I love this so much! Hahah!” expressed a third. “That's my best of the Internet today,” commented a fourth.
