Why Pro-China President Muizzu is Committed to Oust Indian Troops from Maldives

Posted By: Aditya Gogoi Posted On: Nov 19, 2023

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday formally requested India to withdraw its military troops from the country saying the Maldivian people have given him a “strong mandate” to make this request to New Delhi.

The statement comes within 24 hours after Muizzu, an engineer-turned-politician, took oath on Friday as the eighth president of the strategically-located archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean.

Maldives President had a meeting with Union minister Kiren Rijiju, where he maintained that he would keep his election promise of evicting Indian military personnel from his country.

The request to withdraw Indian personnel didn't surprise many as Muizzu, during the election campaign, had repeatedly indicated that the withdrawal of Indian military troops from the island nation is among the issues that need to be resolved by the two countries.

President Mohamed Muizzu was elected Maldives' eighth president last year, after receiving 54 per cent of the vote against his predecessor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's 46 per cent.

The election was seen a virtual referendum on which regional power – China or India – will have better relations with the island nation in the Indian Ocean.

Muizzu, from the Progressive Alliance – a coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC), is considered pro-China. His opponent former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had good ties with New Delhi and the bilateral relations progressed between the two nations under Solih's rule.

Muizzu, a former mayor of the capital Male and a construction minister for seven years, is a close associate of former Maldives President Abdulla Yameen. Yameen is known for his pro-China approach and repugnance for India as he believes that New Delhi played a role in his defeat during the 2018 Presidential elections.

Muizzu also promised to cultivate “strong ties” with China like his ally Yameen, who forged close ties with Beijing during his Presidency from 2013 to 2018.

During the election campaign, he not only indicated the withdrawal of Indian military troops but also asserted that he was firmly committed to ensuring that his country remains “free” of any “foreign military presence” to preserve its independence and sovereignty.

How did Maldives become a geopolitical hotspot?

Famously known as one of the most expensive holiday destinations in South Asia, with pristine white beaches and secluded resorts, Maldives has also become a geopolitical hotspot as it is located strategically on the shipping route connecting East and West.

Maldivian foreign policy become a partisan domestic political issue, with parties either leaning toward China or India. Maldives leaned towards China under President Abdullah Yameen Gayoom, who was in office from 2013 to 2018.

In 2017, during Yameen's visit to China, the island nation agreed to join China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The development initiative is meant to build railroads, ports and highways to expand trade — and China's influence — across Asia, Africa and Europe. Since then, Maldives has reportedly borrowed hundreds of millions of dollars from China.

However, after the 2018 elections, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's came to power and rebuild strong ties with India. India, which sees the island nation as a key part of the Indian Ocean, has provided about $2 billion in development assistance to the country, according to BBC.

However, when Muizzu won the presidential poll, it was seen as a setback for India-Maldives ties as the progress made under Solih since 2018 suddenly backtracked.

Before winning the elections, Muizz told the Chinese Communist Party a year ago that he wanted stronger ties with Beijing should his Progressive Party win the 2023 elections.

How Many Indian Soldiers are Present in Maldives?

The number of Indian troops in the Maldives is not publicly known. Muizzu's Progressive Alliance has portrayed Solih's India-first policy as a threat to the Maldives' sovereignty and security.

As per experts, the secrecy in the agreement between India and Solih's government regarding the role and number of Indian military personnel has led to suspicion and rumours.

In 2021, the Maldivian defence force said about 75 Indian military personnel were based in the country to operate and maintain the Indian aircraft. India reportedly operates two Indian-donated helicopters and assists in search and rescue operations for people stranded or facing calamities at sea.

What China’s $4

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Nov 28, 2023
In 2017, Sri Lanka?s government handed over the Hambantota Port to a state-owned Chinese firm on a 99-year lease (Photo: AFP)

Sri Lanka has paved the way for a $4.5 billion investment by China in Hambantota. The town, which also houses a port that was leased to a Chinese state-owned shipping company in 2017, is at the heart of India’s concerns about growing Chinese influence in New Delhi’s strategic backyard. Mint take a look at the announcement and its implication.

What exactly was announced?

Sri Lanka's energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera broke the news on Monday that China's Sinopec will be awarded a contract to establish a refinery at Hambantota Port. “Cabinet approval was granted today to award the contract to China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) of China, to enter into an agreement to establish a new Petroleum Refinery & Associated Product Processing center in Hambantota," Wijesekera posted on X.

This came after the country signed an agreement with Sinopec in May for the storage, distribution and sale of petroleum products. This was particularly important for Sri Lanka, given the energy shortages that have rocked the country in recent years.

Why is this announcement significant?

At the heart of this new development is China's growing influence in India's strategic backyard. China has become a major investor, trading partner and political player in the island nation in recent decades. Hambantota Port, which was financed with an estimated $1.3 billion of Chinese money, is seen as a key example of the lengths to which China will go to expand its influence.

Experts have suggested that the economic logic for building the port has always been weak. Some reports suggest it was built to shore up China's relationship with the Rajapaksa family, which has played a dominant role in the country's politics.

Whatever the case, the project ran up large debts and Sri Lanka's government eventually handed it over to a state-owned Chinese firm on a 99-year lease in lieu of those debts. This is seen as an instance of China's “debt-trap diplomacy".

What are India?s concerns?

New Delhi has a range of concerns about China's increased role in Sri Lanka. The first is that its economic presence gives it leverage over Sri Lanka's government. Experts also suggest that India has been concerned about the security implications of China's investments in Hambantota. Chinese vessels like the Yuan Wang V have docked at Hambantota Port, amid concerns that these ships are in the Indian Ocean to gather intelligence on India's military capabilities. Given that Sri Lanka is currently battling for its economic survival, China's role may continue to expand, as the latest investment from Sinopec suggests.

How has India reacted to China's growing ties with Sri Lanka?

India has stepped up its own efforts to become a ‘partner of first resort' for Sri Lanka. It approved a $4 billion economic rescue package for the country as its economic crisis worsened in 2022. It also played a key role in helping Sri Lanka secure a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. India has also unveiled a slew of new initiatives, including an energy pipeline, to alleviate some of Sri Lanka's resource constraints. It has also conveyed its concerns to Sri Lanka about China's military presence in the region.

IND vs AUS, 3rd T20I

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

Australia skipper Matthew Wade won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the third T20I match on Tuesday at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. India have already won the first two matches to take a 2-0 lead and one win on Tuesday will help them to seal the series.

The Australian bowlers will have a big task ahead of themselves to stop the in-form India's batting line-up to cross the 200-run mark in the third straight match.

Australia made few changes in their XI as Travis Head, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff got places in the side as several stars, who were part of the ODI World Cup-winning squad, returned to their home to manage their workload.

Skipper Wade said that the dew will affect the match right from the start and with time it will only get difficult for the bowlers.

“We will bowl. I don't think it matters a lot, dew should settle in early. We are not a 100% sure, but it's quite wet already and could only become a bigger factor. We were short in a couple of phases, but the boys are in good shape. We have a few going out after this game – Travis Head, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff,” Wade said at the toss.

Meanwhile, India made one change to their XI as Avesh Khan came in place of Mukesh Kumar who is getting married as skipper Suryakumar Yadav also wished him all the best for the biggest game of his life.

“Happy to bat first, not surprised with the dew coming along early. We just want to do the same thing, have the game plans and express ourselves. One change for us – Avesh replaces Mukesh, who is playing his biggest game, he's getting married and we wish him all the best,” Suryakumar said at the toss.

India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan(w), Suryakumar Yadav(c), Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna

Australia (Playing XI): Travis Head, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade(w/c), Nathan Ellis, Jason Behrendorff, Tanveer Sangha, Kane Richardson

China Navy Ships Arrive in Myanmar for Joint Drills Amid Ongoing Border Conflict Published 4 minutes ago

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Nov 28, 2023

Three Chinese navy ships have arrived in Myanmar for joint drills with its navy, the country's junta said, as a border conflict strains ties between the Southeast Asian nation and its most important ally.

A destroyer, frigate and a supply vessel carrying hundreds of sailors arrived at Thilawa port on Monday ahead of “naval security exercises between Myanmar and China”, the junta's information team said. It did not give details about the drills or when they would begin but state media reported the Chinese “naval task force” was 700 sailors strong.

Beijing is a major ally and arms supplier of Myanmar's junta and has refused to label its 2021 power grab a coup. Relations have been tested recently as the junta battles an alliance of ethnic minority groups across a swathe of territory near the China border. The junta has said the groups are using drones made in China in their offensive that has seized trade hubs and dozens of military outposts in northern Shan state.

Earlier this month protesters gathered at a rare demonstration in Yangon to accuse China of backing the armed groups, in what analysts say was a move sanctioned by junta authorities. Beijing has expressed “strong dissatisfaction” over the clashes in northern Shan state, home to oil and gas pipelines that supply China and a planned billion-dollar railway link.

China has said the fighting has caused Chinese “casualties” on its side of the border, without giving details. Beijing has also been frustrated by the junta's failure to crack down on online scam compounds in Myanmar's lawless borderlands that target Chinese citizens.

On Saturday, China kicked off military exercises near the Myanmar border, days after an attack on a compound in the Myanmar border hub of Muse destroyed more than one hundred vehicles. The offensive launched last month by an alliance of three ethnic minority armed groups has galvanised other opponents of the junta. Clashes have spread to the east and the west of the country and forced nearly 335,000 people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.

Suryakumar Yadav's India take on Matthew Wade's Australia in the third T20 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Assam on Tuesday. The Men in Blue have thrashed the Aussies in the last two matches and will be looking to seal the tournament with a win in the third T20 of the five-match series.

Surya-led India have looked energetic on the field and somewhat ultra-aggressive with the bat, following in their captain's footsteps. In their last encounter, the Indian side had handed Australia a comfortable 44-run defeat, buoyed by half-centuries from India's top three batsmen and later by the onslaught of left-hander Rinku Singh.

Another left-hander in the side, Tilak Varma, will be under the scanner in the 3rd T20 match as there may be changes in the Indian XI with Shreyas Iyer taking over the vice-captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad from the next match. Varma, who was out cheaply to Tanvir Sangha in the first game and barely got any time at the crease in the second, will be looking to make an impact in the third T20I to seal his place in the Indian XI.

India vs Australia 3rd T20: Fantasy XI

Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Josh Inglis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jason Behrendorff, Ravi Bishnoi

India vs Australia 3rd T20: Match prediction

As per Google's win probability, there is a 55% chance that India will win today.

Meanwhile, according to CricTracker, no matter who bats first, India will emerge victorious. MyKhel also says that India are likely to win and take an unassailable lead in the series. We believe the Men in Blue, who have looked the superior side in the series so far, will come out on top once again against a tired Aussie line-up.
