Russell Brand Questioned by London Police on Sex Assault Charges
London police have questioned the comedian and actor Russell Brand over allegations of three sexual offences, The Times reported Sunday, following claims from several women of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse.
Brand, 48, has denied the claims stemming from an investigation by The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4 of the alleged incidents, which are said to have taken place between 2006 and 2013.
Without identifying Brand by name, Scotland Yard said, “A man in his 40s attended a police station in south London on Thursday” for questioning in relation to “three non-recent sexual offences. Inquiries continue”.
The inquiry was opened in September against the provocative actor who has become an anti-establishment influencer on social media, with millions of followers.
Police have said “a certain number of claims” of sexual assault had since emerged, and Brand's former employers the BBC and Channel 4 as well as a production company have also opened investigations.
The BBC recently said it had received two more complaints, for a total of five against the actor in Britain on “allegations of inappropriate conduct in the workplace, including urinating in bottles in a BBC studio”.
Earlier this month, court documents revealed that Brand was accused by an unnamed actress of sexually assaulting her during the filming of the film “Arthur” in 2010 in New York.
According to the investigation by the newspapers and a documentary, Brand allegedly raped one woman in his Los Angeles home.
Another claims he assaulted her during a three-month relationship when she was 16 and still at school.
Brand became known internationally as the former husband of pop star Katy Perry after forging a career as a stand-up comedian with risque routines, often about drugs and sex.
Shane MacGowan, songwriter and lead singer of Celtic folk-punk band The Pogues, died early Thursday at the age of 65 after a long illness, his widow announced.
Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me... has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese," wrote MacGowan's widow Victoria Mary Clarke in an Instagram post. Later, the band said on its official website that "Shane died peacefully at 3.30 am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife and sister by his side.
MacGowan, who had been in and out of hospital in Dublin since July, is most famous for penning the Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York", a duet sung with Kirsty MacColl in 1987.
Co-formed by MacGowan, the Pogues fused punk and Irish folk music. He was born in England but spent much of his childhood in Ireland with his mother's family.
The band became an international symbol of Irishness, both at home and for the sprawling diaspora, with MacGowan's contribution recognised in a slew of tributes from political leaders.
"Shane will be remembered as one of music's greatest lyricists," Irish President Michael D. Higgins said in a statement.
"So many of his songs would be perfectly crafted poems, if that would not have deprived us of the opportunity to hear him sing them," he said.
Taoiseach (prime minister) Leo Varadkar called MacGowan "an amazing musician and artist".
"His songs beautifully captured the Irish experience, especially the experience of being Irish abroad," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Micheal Martin, Varadkar's deputy, said he was "devastated" by MacGowan's death, calling him "iconic".
"His passing is particularly poignant at this time of year as we listen to Fairytale of New York -- a song that resonates with all of us," he wrote.
There were tributes too from Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army paramilitary group which fought for decades against British rule in Northern Ireland.
The Pogues' 1988 song "Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six", which recounted the plight of six Irishmen wrongly imprisoned for deadly pub bombings in Birmingham, was banned from British airwaves.
The 1974 attacks that killed 21 and left scores more injured were blamed on the IRA.
The Birmingham Six saw their convictions quashed on appeal in 1991.
Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald called MacGowan "a poet, dreamer and social justice champion".
"He was a republican and a proud Irish man. Nobody told the Irish story like Shane. He sang to us of dreams and captured stories of emigration," she said.
Her predecessor Gerry Adams a central figure in "The Troubles" and a close friend of MacGowan and Clarke said: "Ireland has lost a great patriot, a poet and friend of the down-trodden and marginalised."

Husky can’t control her excitement as pet dad sings DuckTales theme song
Social media is filled with videos of dogs reacting to their favourite things. You may have seen pooches getting excited over toys, balls, films, and even sticks. However, have you ever seen a dog unable to control her emotions because of a cartoon song? Meet Leia, a husky who gets super excited when her pet dad sings the theme song of DuckTales for her.
A video of Leia was shared on Instagram earlier this year on an Instagram page dedicated to her and her pet sibling, Archer. The video was posted with the caption, “Your husky's biggest trigger is the late 1980s / early 1990s cartoon jingles”.
The video is creating a stir after recently being shared on Reddit. It shows a dog standing on what appears to be a portico. Her pet dad is heard saying, “I don't know what you want Leia”. At this point, the dog calmly stands and keeps looking at her pet dad. However, as soon as he starts singing the theme song for DuckTales, the scene instantly changes.
Leia gets excited and jumps around. She even ignores her doggo brother standing next to her. At one point, the dog also runs to the backyard to calm herself. However, she again starts her zoomies once her pet dad continues singing.
The video was posted a day ago. Since then, it has collected close to 1,600 upvotes. The share has further accumulated several comments from people.
“Oh man, you're actually a pretty damn good singer. That was hilarious. Huskies are easily the goofiest of dogs,” wrote a Reddit user. “This is so cute! We sing to our dogs as well and I think it's something about us being happy and the pitch of our voice that makes them happy as well,” shared another. “Omg, I love this so much! Hahah!” expressed a third. “That's my best of the Internet today,” commented a fourth.

Five Takeaways for National Politics on Road to 2024 Published 3 minutes ago
Exit polls have been a critical weathervane in the political theatre that has characterised key poll contests ever since the American pollster Warren Mitofsky conducted the first one in 1967 for the Kentucky governor's contest. Individual polls may get it wrong sometimes, for sure, but a wider poll of exit polls – averaging out the findings of all key pollsters — more often than not, does provide a sense of the direction in which the people's mood is moving.
So, what does the poll of exit polls – showing a possible 2-2 draw between Congress and BJP — in key Hindi heartland states and Telangana mean for national politics? If these numbers (see chart) hold on results day, here are five key takeaways:
• Brand Modi still delivering, even in state contests: A BJP victory in Rajasthan (which would be part of the state's historical pattern of replacing incumbents) and a tight margin call in Madhya Pradesh (going against the grain of 20 years of anti-incumbency) would first and foremost indicate that Prime Minister Modi's brand appeal retains its electoral potency, even in local contests.
Remember that in both Rajasthan and MP, the party made it clear that it has no CM face – despite the presence of its traditional satraps, Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chauhan. The Prime Minister – or ‘Modi ki guarantee' as the party's poll slogan put it – has been at the centre of the party's campaign in both states, to paper over the internal fissures created by the party's effort to effect a generational change in both states.
• BJP's Core Voter Base and Last Mile Party Machinery Remain Strong in Hindi Heartland: After two decades of incumbency in Madhya Pradesh, few gave BJP a chance even three months ago. Despite that, a BJP resurgence in the state showcases the inherent strengths of the party's cadre.
MP was the original bastion of the Sangh, long before even Gujarat. If the polls are right, then they indicate that BJP managed to overcome internal differences and galvanise its core cadres, in sharp contrast to what happened in Karnataka just three months ago. To a lesser extent, this is true in Rajasthan as well.
• Jury Still Out on Mandal 2.0 and Caste Survey: The runup to these assembly polls was animated by Rahul Gandhi's call for a nationwide caste census. The opposition was betting big on this gambit as a way of cutting through the BJP's Hindutva plank and to fracture the new Other Backwards Classes (OBC) base that has powered the party's post-2014 victories in the Modi era.
This seems to have had limited impact on the ground. Almost one-third of MP's 230 assembly seats, for example, are OBC-dominated. If the exit poll average in two key Hindi heartland battleground states is right, it indicates a lukewarm response to what many saw a game-changing super weapon to combat the BJP's poll juggernaut ahead of the 2024 polls.
• Congress's Telangana Surge Indicates Emergence of a Different South India Model: The revival of the Congress in Telangana resurrects a core party bastion that had simply crumbled away in the aftermath of the new state's formation in 2014. After the party's Karnataka sweep earlier this year, the Telangana surge hands the Congress a second southern state, with a strong economic and financial base.
Like Karnataka, the Congress benefitted from a strong local leadership in Telangana. And it hugely benefitted from defections by many leaders who began to see it as a viable challenger in Hyderabad after the Karnataka victory. The party's Telangana campaign essentially followed the same template as Karnataka and voters moved to it after it became clear that it was a serious challenger to the status quo. If the exit polls are right, then it also indicates a significant movement of minority votes in Telangana to Congress from the BRS.
• Women Voters Have Changed the Game: These elections have once again underscored the crucial role of the Mahila-factor. In MP, for instance 18.3 lakh women voters cast their ballots, 2% more than last time. Women ‘labharthees' clearly played a pivotal role in the BJP's resurgence, driven by new welfare measures like the ‘Ladli Behna' [Beloved Sister] scheme that put money directly in their pockets.
Women voters have been crucial to the BJP's poll advances since 2014 in north India, on the back of welfare schemes and last-mile delivery with direct-benefit-transfers. Their rise has been a game-changer overturning traditional politics. The higher turnout of women voters is also intrinsically linked to the creation of a new ‘labharthee' class' and the rise of a new kind of competitive welfare politics. This trend is here to stay. As these elections showed, no major party can afford to ignore this.
Finally, it is important to remember that BJP had lost all these 4 key state assembly contests in December 2018. Yet, just a few months later in the 2019 national polls, it swept Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh and made inroads in Telangana. Voters often vote differently in state (where local issues matter more) and national contests.
Yet, five years later, the fact that BJP has managed to get ahead now in two assembly contests, indicates that it remains in pole position on the road to 2024. The Congress has cause to celebrate with its Telangana resurgence, for sure. However, in the Hindi heartland, if these polls hold, it still faces a huge uphill battle up ahead in head-to-head contests with the BJP in 2024.
