Khalistani Extremists in Canada Attack Surrey Laxmi Narayan Temple President

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Dec 29, 2023

Khalistani extremists attacked the president of Canada's Surrey's Laxmi Narayan Temple's president Satish Kumar on Wednesday. People familiar with the developments told CNN-News18 that Khalistani separatists were involved in the attack.

Satish Kumar's residence was subjected to indiscriminate firing with almost 14 rounds being fired at his residence. People close to him said his house was attacked around 2am in the morning (local time).

The temple of which Kumar is the president witnessed at least three attacks allegedly led by Khalistani extremists in the recent past. A peaceful counter-protest was staged last month against the vandalism when the extremists gathered to attack the temple premises.

People mentioned above also told CNN-News18 that Satish and his family may have been attacked for their counter-protest and anti-Khalistan stance.

Over the past couple of months several Indo-Canadian businesses and their owners have been targeted by Khalistani extremists. Their businesses and residences were subjected to open firing and they received voice notes and letters demanding extortion money.

Nawab Motors, a motor showroom owned by an Indo-Canadian businessman, was among the businesses that were targeted along with at least 10 other Indian-owned businesses through extortion letters and voice notes. One group which is identifying itself with the Vicky Gounder group claimed that it attacked the establishment.

Gounder was killed in 2018-19 in an encounter.

An Indo-Canadian business in Brampton was targeted but the law enforcement was able to arrest one person connected to the attack. Andy Dugga, the owner of New Millennium Tyre, was attacked in Brampton.

Firings were also reported from White Rock where a businessman's home was targeted.

The police said these victims, who are businessmen from Punjab, are contacted through social media platforms and demands for money are made which if they fail to pay they will have no protection from future attacks. The police feel these extortion letters are sent to scare businesses.

Some of these businesses are car showrooms and there is a high craze for cars among Punjabi youth. The attacks targeted these showrooms and bullets struck the showrooms but no one was injured as the attacks happened after office hours.

Government sources familiar with the developments told CNN-News18 that these problems are occurring due to the lack of coordination between the Indian and Canadian agencies as the Canadian agencies are not taking the threats posed by the miscreants seriously.

They said that gangsters are coming to Canada and getting asylum there and are creating safety concerns for the Indian community in Canada. These gangsters who are backed by Pakistani spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), are now not only shooting the videos of the attacks but are also circulating it on social media.

The people mentioned above said it is alarming to see these groups operating from countries like Spain and Portugal as well as from other European countries.

Raja Bhaiya to Vote for BJP’s RS Candidate in Kaushambi

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Feb 26, 2024

Despite a visit by Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, Raghuraj Pratap Singh, popularly known as ‘Raja Bhaiya', is set to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the Rajya Sabha (RS) elections on Tuesday.

The poll has 11 candidates — eight from the BJP and three from the SP — vying for 10 seats. The BJP's seven candidates and SP's two are set to win unopposed. But the BJP has made things difficult for the SP by fielding an eighth candidate. Raja Bhaiya's party Jansatta Dal (Lok Tantrik) has two votes, including his.

While both Yadav and UP BJP President Bhupendra Chaudhary met Raja Bhaiya, Chaudhary was also accompanied by Shravan Baghel, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

A day before the polls, both SP as well as Adityanath's office invited Raja Bhaiya for dinner arranged for the MLAs who will be voting for the eighth Rajya Sabha candidate.

During negotiations, Bhaiya proposed to back his preferred candidate, Shailendra Kumar, in Kaushambi Lok Sabha constituency. Sources say both the parties agreed to it, following which he asked for another seat, which wasn't agreeable to either.

So what proved to be the clincher?

Last year, acting on the direction of the Supreme Court, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team had reached Kunda in Pratapgarh to re-investigate the role of Bhaiya and his four aides in the murder of deputy SP Zia-ul-Haq in 2013. It is believed that it might have played a role in the way he votes on Tuesday, along with his party MLA.

This is not the first snub to the SP from the Kunda strongman.

In the 2018 Rajya Sabha election, despite being on Yadav's side, Bhaiya did not vote for Bhimrao Ambedkar — the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate whom the SP was backing. Bhaiya instead voted for the BJP Rajya Sabha candidate. It had more to do with a longstanding history, where Bhaiya was sent to prison during Mayawati's rule.

Russia Must Win This War

Posted By: Vanshika Pathak Posted On: Feb 26, 2024

In a slip of the tongue, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said “Russia must win the war”, giving ammunition to social media users to bash him. However, upon recognising the error, Trudeau promptly corrected himself, asserting that he meant to say “Ukraine must win this war against Russia”.

“We know that Russia must win this war. Sorry, Ukraine must win this war against Russia,” said the Canadian PM, who immediately offered an apology for the unintended blunder.

The Canadian PM had recently visited Ukraine and announced USD 2.2 billion in financial and military support for the war-torn country.

Trudeau made the statement while addressing a press conference with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk at Warsaw on Monday.

The clip where Trudeau the gaffe was widely shared on social media, mainly X, formerly Twitter.

Mocking Trudeau, a X user sarcastically commented that he has expressed his “heart's wish,” while another user pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an ally of Canada, might not appreciate the slip-up.

Another user humorously chimed in, suggesting that Trudeau might have misspoken, but he “hit the nail on the head!”

Didn’t Insult or Stab Anyone in the Back

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Feb 26, 2024

After getting the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) name and symbol, Ajit Pawar, national president of the party, posted a 10-point letter to the people of Maharashtra to clear his position that he joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government in the state only for development, and “did not insult or back-stab anyone".

Deputy Chief Minister Pawar, who is known for his aggressive style of work and good grip over administration, has been at the centre of criticism for taking a stand different from that of NCP founder Sharad Pawar and splitting the party. Pawar has earlier, too, explained that he had not betrayed Sharad Pawar, rather he followed his orders every time, including for the morning swearing-in in 2019. With these 10 points, Pawar again justified his decision to join Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government.

Ajit Pawar joined Maharashtra politics in 1991 when he contested the Lok Sabha election for the first time and won. Pawar said that there was “enough discussion over who brought him into politics, who made him the minister and who gave him opportunities". “But I got the opportunity to enter politics accidentally. There was an opportunity for a young leader, hence I was given this opportunity by the family. I sacrificed my personal responsibilities and focused on work related to people. For the past 30 years, I have been doing this, as just getting an opportunity is not enough, you need to work tirelessly to make the best use of that opportunity for people," said Pawar.

In the same letter, Pawar wrote: “From day one of my political career, I have always kept focus on developmental issues. Today also, I am doing the same and the same will be followed in the future. I have seen the pace of work when you have power and have also seen the pace of work, when you are in the opposition. If you want to work for people at that pace, you need to have the help of the power (government) to do the developmental work…"

He further wrote, “I have not compromised on any ideology or with the vision of development. The decision I took was with the purpose of speeding up development. While doing so, neither did I back-stab nor did I insult anyone."

“The way development is taking place under the able leadership of PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah is remarkable. I personally liked their qualities of strong leadership and right decision-making, which were similar to my working style. I knew this would make it easy to implement my ideas and plans for development of Maharashtra, hence I decided to join hands with them," Pawar said.

India's Three-Dimensional Approach Slashes Left Wing Extremism Violence by Over 50%

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Feb 24, 2024

The government of India's three-dimensional approach to wiping out Left Wing Extremism (LWE) has shown a significant decline in violence.

According to government data, cases of violence have reduced by 52 per cent and the number of deaths by 69 per cent from 6,035 to 1,868 in the decade 2014-23 compared to 2004-14. A total of 195 new camps have been established in the Red zone.

Similarly, cases have been given to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe thoroughly, special task forces have been constituted with offensive strategy and air support have been given for effective operations.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, after various high-level deliberations and interactions with the state governments concerned in dealing with this decades-old problem, it was felt appropriate that an integrated approach aimed at the relatively more affected areas would deliver results.

“With this in view, a detailed analysis of the spread and trends in respect of Left Wing Extremist violence has been made and 70 districts in 10 states have been taken up for special attention with regard to planning, implementation and monitoring various interventions,” MHA said.

According to MHA data, incidents of Left Wing Extremism have reduced from 14,862 to 7,128. The number of deaths of security forces due to LWE has declined by 72 per cent from 1,750 in 2004-14 to 485 during 2014-23 and the number of civilian deaths has declined by 68 per cent from 4,285 to 1,383. Similarly, the number of districts with violence was 96 in 2010, which declined by 53 per cent to 45 in 2022. Along with this, the number of police stations reporting violence decreased from 465 in 2010 to 176 in 2022.

The Union government closely monitors the situation and supplements and coordinates their efforts in several ways. These include providing the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs); sanction of India Reserve (IR) battalions, setting up of Counter Insurgency and Anti-Terrorism (CIAT) schools; modernisation and upgradation of the State Police and their Intelligence apparatus; reimbursement of security related expenditure under the Security-related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme; providing helicopters for anti-LWE operations, assistance in training of State Police through the Ministry of Defence, the Central Police Organisations and the Bureau of Police Research and Development; sharing of Intelligence; facilitating inter-State coordination; assistance in community policing and civic action programmes etc.

The underlying philosophy is to enhance the capacity of the state governments to tackle Maoist menace in a concerted manner.

Magnitude of Breach Alarming

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Feb 24, 2024

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Friday the force was investigating — and at the same time trying to stop — a major cyberattack on its networks.

“A breach of this magnitude is alarming,” federal police spokesperson Marie-Eve Breton said in a statement, adding that the force was “actively managing” the threat.

No information was provided about the suspected source of the attack.

The RCMP has launched a criminal investigation into the breach, vowing to “hold those responsible accountable.”

With assistance from Canada's national cryptologic agency — which provides Ottawa with IT security and foreign signals intelligence — it said it was still assessing “the breadth and scope of the security breach.”

“The situation is evolving quickly,” explained Breton, adding that there was no impact on policing, and “at this time, no known impacts on safety and security partners in Canada or abroad.”

PM Modi’s ‘Poll’ Vault to Cross 370

Posted By: Ramesh Sharma Posted On: Feb 23, 2024

From southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to Maharashtra in the west, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a whirlwind tour across the country over next week. The PM is also scheduled to have at least two visits to the eastern state of Bengal.

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will first arrive in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, on February 27. The visit will kick off with Modi's tour of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which will be followed by launch of several development projects. The prime minister will also be holding a mega public rally in the capital city.

Modi will also participate in the last and closing day of the Patra, undertaken by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Tamil Nadu president Annamalai. He is expected to address the gathering. He will also visit Madurai for a digital mobility event for the MSME sector.

On February 28, Modi will participate in government programmes, where he will place the foundation stone and inaugurate several development projects in Thuthhukodi (Tuticorin). This is the constituency of K Kanimozhi, daughter of K Karunanidhi and sister of Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin.

On February 28 evening, PM Modi will arrive in Maharashtra. He is expected to inaugurate several development projects in Yavatmal. A public address by the Prime Minister is also on the cards.

PM Modi is expected to visit Bengal for two trips early next month. As per the schedule that has been released through BJP sources, Modi will hold government programmes and a public rally in Arambagh on March 1. On the following day, March 2, he will be in Krishna Nagar for programmes and public rally.

ALSO READ | PM Modi's Mega Rally in West Bengal on March 7: 2L Women, Including Sandeshkhali Victims, Expected to Attend

Interestingly, Krishna Nagar is the constituency from where Mahua Moitra won the election in 2019. She was recently stripped of her Lok Sabha membership, following complaints received against her for having shared her Lok Sabha login ID and password with businessman, Darshan Hiranandani.

The big focus on these visits will be his public rally which is scheduled to take place in Barasat on March 6. The state BJP has prepared to bring close to 2,00,00 women to attend this rally, which will take place in the same district as Sandeshkhali, where trouble has been mounting for the last couple of weeks. It is also being seen as a major face-off between the Trinamool Congress-led state government and the principal opposition BJP.

These visits, in the run-up to the big 2024 election, are extremely important.

This is Modi's third visit to the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu this year. With big thrust on winning seats, so far, the BJP campaign has been unsuccessful in these two southern states. Of the 59 Lok Sabha seats, 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and 20 in Kerala, the saffron party does not have a single MP.

ALSO READ | PM Modi Aims for the ‘South Poll', Going on Third Trip to Region This Year on January 19

It has seen a dismal performance in other southern states too. Of the 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP has failed to win a single one. In the neighbouring Telugu state of Telangana, of the 17 seats, the BJP was able to win 4 last time. The most successful campaign for the BJP has been in the state of Karnataka, which is one of the oldest organisation for the party. In the last election, the BJP secured 25 of the 29 seats. This time the BJP is an alliance with JDS.

The battle of Bengal has also been aggressive for the BJP. Branded as a party of outsiders, the BJP, which had just two seats in the 2014 elections, stunned many by securing 18 Lok Sabha seats in 2019. Currently, the party stands at a seat strength of 16. Two of the sitting MPs jumped back to the TMC. This included former union minister Babul Supriyo and Arjun Singh.

Much water has flown under the bridge since the last election, both in the Centre and the state assembly in Maharashtra. After having secured 17 seats each, both the BJP and Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, had a bitter fallout, and the party joined hands with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress to form a coalition government. But another twist in the tale saw Eknath Shinde branch out of the Uddhav Thackeray faction along with 12 MPs and a majority of the MLAs to join the NDA government. With less than a year to go for the Lok Sabha elections, another party split in Maharashtra. This time around it was Ajit Pawar and Praful Patel, who led a rebellion against Sharad Pawar and their NCP also joined the NDA government.

With over 100 seats in the south, including 59 in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, 48 in Maharashtra and 42 in Bengal, the BJP is hoping that their biggest star campaigner and in whose name the party has been winning every election from Panchayat to Parliament, Modi can once again set the stage for them ahead of the announcement of the election dates. The prime minister had declared on the floor of the house in Lok Sabha that this time the BJP will secure 370 seats on its own and the NDA will have a strength of over 400 in the house.

Confident of Third Term

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Feb 23, 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no doubt that the BJP will come back to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and has set an ambitious target not just for his party but also the NDA.

While several opposition parties are still trying to stitch together an alliance to pose a challenge to ‘Modi magic', the prime minister demonstrated his confidence in the last cabinet meeting as he asked his ministers a crucial question: “What is your plan for the next 100 days once we come back to power?”

This is not it. Sources told CNN-News18 that during the meeting, the ministers were also asked to identify focus areas of work for the next five-year term from 2024 to 2029. It is expected that officials from the cabinet secretariat will establish contact with each minister individually and find out about the plans for the years to come.

On March 3, the council of ministers will meet at the Sushma Swaraj Bhavan in the national capital for a day-long discussion. This will be the last council of ministers meeting for the present government before elections. Sources indicated that a detailed discussion may take place with the council during the meeting on the focus for the next 100 days if BJP comes to power in 2024.

After coming into power in 2019, the Modi government held its first expansion in 2021. Several new faces found a place in the council, including those from the OBC community. From bureaucrats-turned-politicians like Ashwini Vaishnaw to technocrats like Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the council was a mixed bag with several women ministers too. At present, there are nine women in PM Modi's council of ministers, including cabinet ministers like Nirmala Sitharaman and Smriti Irani. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who waited for over a year since joining BJP, was also made a cabinet minister.

The PM Modi-led BJP, supported by the NDA, stormed to power in 2014. The mandate of victory in the next Lok Sabha election in 2019 was even bigger than in 2014. This time, as the saffron party looks to form a government at the Centre for a record third time, the prime minister is looking at achieving another landmark by holding the chair for the third time in a row.

Pakistan ISI Gave Three Choices to Imran

Posted By: Anita Mamgai Posted On: Feb 23, 2024

Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi is claiming that the Pakistani establishment wants to kill Imran Khan and his entire family. A close aide of the former Pakistan prime minister told CNN-News18 that the establishment is clamping down hard on Imran and those close to him.

The aforementioned people said the Pakistani spy agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) contacted him with a deal which he refused.

Imran Khan in a message to his wife Bushra Bibi said he was contacted by the ISI who put forward a deal that he refused. The deal had three options. The first option was to retire from politics. The second option was to propose three names of his choice for the role of the Pakistan prime minister and the third option was to remain under house arrest for the rest of his life at his Bani Gala residence in Lahore but Imran Khan refused all the options.

They also said that the establishment is trying to poison Bushra Bibi, the former first lady and the wife of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo to break his resolve. Referring to his sister Aleema Khan's conversations with foreign media outlets, the establishment accused Khan's sister of speaking to “foreigners”. They also referred to the arrest of journalist Imran Riaz Khan, a scribe sympathetic to Imran Khan, and said the journalist was abducted and tortured for months.

“In this dangerous climate, the danger to Imran Khan and his close family and relatives in Pakistan has exponentially grown. The ‘state' might try to harm Imran Khan to eliminate him,” the people mentioned above said.

Minister in Jail

Posted By: Jaydatt Chaudhary Posted On: Feb 22, 2024

Senior ministers and some alleged strongmen of the Trinamool Congress, who were in-charge of the organisation and polls for two districts — South 24 Pargana and North 24 Pargana — are either behind bars or on the run.

Jyoti Priya Mallick aka Balu, the minister in-charge of Bengal's largest district with five Lok Sabha constituencies, is in jail now. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the ration scam. In his absence, one of his close aides, locally known as his “henchman” — Sheikh Shahjahan — was calling the shots in two of the most important blocks in the district.

However, things took a turn for the worse after he allegedly orchestrated an attack on on-duty ED officers in early January. Following this, allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing started pouring in against Shahjahan who is on the run now for 49 days.

Trinamool's fort in south Bengal crumbling? TMC says otherwise

The two most important and sensitive districts of south Bengal — South and North 24 Pargana — include a total of 10 Lok Sabha seats and have always been locally controlled and managed by senior Trinamool Congress leaders like Shahjahan, Arabul Islam, Saokat Mollah and some others.

Of these leaders, Saokat and Arabul are MLA and ex-MLA respectively while Shajahan is a senior member of the Zila Parishad.

However, the panchayat poll-centric violence in Bhangar last year, Mallick's arrest and Sandeshkhali upheaval over allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault, seem to have dealt a body blow to the party structure in the area.

But senior Trinamool leaders are confident that Sandeshkhali will “settle” soon and people will forget Shahjahan as the incidents and allegations are “partly fabricated by the BJP and CPM”.

Talking to News18, Mollah said: “Our party structure is intact. There is nothing to worry about.”

Another senior Trinamool Congress leader of the area said, “There were certain issues in the area, but most of the allegations, if not all, are partly fabricated. The party is probing them. The administration is also doing its job. Everything will settle soon. Sandeshkhali block has 11 panchayats, of which we faced a little trouble in some booths in one panchayat. The rest is ours.”

Arabul, an ex-MLA, was arrested post the violent clashes in Bhangar in South 24 Pargana district last year. He is still in jail. Mollah, Trinamool MLA from Canning and senior leader in the party, holds the charge for South 24 Pargana district.

All three of them have several allegations of violence against them. However, there are no FIRs as such, barring against Arabul Islam, who is behind bars now. Mollah, known to be close to Trinamool MP and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, is also believed to be a leader who has “excellent organisational capacity” and can mobilise cadres. Mollah is one of the trusted lieutenants of the party who manages several areas of South 24 Pargana district.

Sandeshkhali to Bhangar: The political flashpoints

For context, one needs to understand why these two districts are the most crucial for the ruling Trinamool Congress. These two districts account for 10 Lok Sabha seats, over 60 assembly constituencies and 510 gram panchayats.

The political and administrative stakes are high as these two districts are the keys to south Bengal and cover almost one-fourth of Bengal's Lok Sabha seats. Moreover, some blocks and several assembly segments across the districts are dominated by Muslims. Muslims constitute almost 30 per cent of Bengal's vote share and contribute a lion's share to Mamata Banerjee's political calculation.

Areas like Sandeshkhali, Hingalganj, Basanti, Bhangar — all political flashpoints of South Bengal — are also seen as ‘money bags' for any political party that ruled the state. Capturing fish ponds, grabbing land have been the way to rule over these places and all such actions continued through intimidation and unabated violence by both Left Front and Trinamool. The geographical location and remote and interior nature of the rural side of these districts make ‘absolute political control' easy in the area, said a senior police officer who worked in the region.

Both the districts are also located near the international border with Bangladesh, which makes some of the areas strategically vulnerable.
