Japan Earthquake

Posted By: Tarun Kumar Posted On: Jan 02, 2024

Japan Tsunami Earthquake Updates: Japan has been hit by 155 earthquakes since Monday including the main 7.6-magnitude jolt that struck Ishikawa and another over 6, the Japan Meteorological Office said on Tuesday. They said that most of the earthquakes were of magnitude higher than 3 on the Richter scale. They also said that even though the strength gradually moderated, at least six strong jolts were still felt on Tuesday.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the earthquake that struck central Japan on New Year's Day caused “extensive” damage with numerous casualties. He said that authorities are in a “race against time” to rescue victims.

“Very extensive damage has been confirmed, including numerous casualties, building collapses and fires,” Kishida was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.

A report by news agency AFP said that Japan, however, has lifted all tsunami warnings.

Monday's major temblor killed six people and triggered tsunami waves over a metre high. The earthquake damaged homes and sparked a major fire that caused damage overnight. The authorities are still assessing the scale of the damage from Monday's quake.

Japanese news broadcasters showed footage of toppled buildings, sunken boats at a port and countless charred homes indicating the damage caused by the earthquake. Several citizens were out in the cold, without electricity, in freezing overnight temperatures.

The port of Wajima was hit by waves of at least four feet high and a series of smaller tsunamis were reported in other parts of the country.

In Suzu, aerial footage shared by Japanese broadcasters showed sunken boats at the city's fishing port and devastation from a major fire in Wajima. Over 32,700 homes were without power on Tuesday.

The Japanese fire and disaster management agency ordered tens of thousands of people to evacuate. The nation's defence ministry said around 1,000 people were staying at a military base.

A major fire engulfed a row of houses in Wajima. Japanese officials evacuated people in the dark with some of them carrying babies and blankets. Wajima Fire Department officials said they are overwhelmed with rescue requests and reports of damages. They said they received over a dozen reports of structural damage.

“Since this morning, the number is rising. We are dealing with various fires and sending our resources for those too,” an official was quoted as saying by AFP.

“I have never experienced anything like this before, it was scary. I went out right away but the ground was shaking,” an elderly man told Japanese broadcaster NHK. Another person said people are in a “horrible situation” and urged for immediate help.

A six or seven-storey building toppled over, but the officer could not give details on whether any people were inside. Many houses collapsed in the city of Suzu, reports said.

Japanese authorities shut down several major highways around the epicentre of the earthquake. Authorities also suspended bullet train services from Tokyo. Flights and mobile phone coverage were reportedly disrupted while many convenience stores were shut.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned local residents of possible further quakes during the coming week or so.

The earthquake on Monday was also felt in capital Tokyo, which lies 300 kms away from the epicentre. A public New Year greeting event that was to be attended by Emperor Naruhito and his family members was cancelled.

US President Joe Biden was briefed on the quake and offered Japan “any necessary assistance” to cope with the aftermath.

Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year and the vast majority of them cause no damage. The nation has strict building and construction regulations due to which buildings built there can withstand strong quakes. The Japanese people and authorities also hold routine emergency drills to better their preparedness in case of an earthquake.

Priyanka Gandhi Played

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Feb 29, 2024

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra played a “pivotal” role in protecting people's mandate in Himachal Pradesh, remaining in constant touch with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and senior leaders to “foil” the BJP's ‘operation Lotus', sources said Thursday.

This came after the Congress asserted that the situation in Himachal Pradesh is “completely under control” of the party and the BJP has “failed” in its attempts to “destabilise the elected government” there.

“The way Congress MLAs rebelled in Himachal Pradesh during the Rajya Sabha elections, it seemed that another state would be lost from the hands of the Congress. But the high command of the party showed activeness and strictness, as it not only averted the crisis of rebellion but the government was also saved,” a party source said.

The sources alleged that the BJP had “hatched a complete conspiracy” to topple the government in Himachal Pradesh but as soon as there was a hint of rebellion, the high command became active.

“Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi immediately became active and took the lead herself along with senior party leaders. Senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda, DK Shivakumar and Bhupesh Baghel were sent as observers and given strict instructions that they had to take everyone along,” the source said.

They also conveyed the stern message that anyone rebelling or working against the party will not be tolerated.

The sources said that Priyanka Gandhi remained in constant touch with the party president, the chief minister, ministers and all important leaders, and did not allow any laxity.

“This deflated the BJP's Operation Lotus. On the other hand, in this entire episode, the image of Himachal Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu was strengthened,” the source said.

Priyanka Gandhi was the face of the Congress' campaign in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections in 2022. She has earlier also played the role of a “trouble-shooter” for the Congress.

Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Thursday disqualified six Congress MLAs who had cross-voted in the recent Rajya Sabha polls for the lone seat in the state.

They had also abstained from voting on the Budget in the assembly, defying a party whip to vote in favour of the government on the Finance Bill.

This was stated to be the reason for their disqualification. Amid the crisis, Chief Minister Sukhu held a breakfast meeting with party MLAs at his official residence, in an apparent show of unity.

In the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly, the Congress has 40 MLAs while the BJP has 25 legislators. The remaining three seats are held by independents.

Shinde along with his deputies Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, all political rivals of Sharad Pawar, will be attending a job fair, 'Namo Maharojgar Melava', in the premises of Vidya Pratishthan college in Baramati town of Pune district.

The surprise invitation to Shinde and the two deputy CMs by Senior Pawar comes in the backdrop of a split in the NCP, a party founded by him in 1999, and strained ties with his nephew Ajit Pawar, who parted ways with him and joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government in July last year.

There are also talks to Ajit Pawar, who has got the NCP name and symbol following the split, thinking of fielding a candidate for the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency, currently represented by his cousin and Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024

Posted By: Vishal Maurya Posted On: Feb 29, 2024
Lok Sabha Elections 2024: BJP-led NDA has finalized seat-sharing in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details (HT_PRINT)

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 11 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will contest two seats and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) will contest one seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. There are a total of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam.

The AGP will contest from Barpeta and Dhubri, while UPPL will field its candidate in Kokrajhar, news agency PTI reported. "The allies will support each other's candidates in all the 14 constituencies," Sarma said.

In a press conference on Thursday, Sarma said he is confident that the BJP will win 11 seats in the state. "The BJP and its alliance will win 11 out of 14 seats (in Assam) and we will contest on the other three seats tooth and nail...but I am optimistic about 11 seats as of now," Sarma said.

Sarma also informed that there will always be new faces in the upcoming elections. "This is because there are many existing MPs from the BJP's side who expressed their desire not to contest and devote their time and energy for the party," the Assam Chief Minister said.

The BJP has nine MPs in the outgoing Lok Sabha from Assam, while the AGP and UPPL have no representation. The Congress holds three seats and the AIUDF one, while another is with an independent candidate.

Assam CM on Congress' ?downhill journey?

Sarma added that "today is a landmark day for Assam BJP". He said two working presidents of the Congress party, one Rana Goswami who was also secretary of the All India Congress Committee at some point of time and worked closely with the UP team under Priyanka Gandhi, has resigned and joined BJP.

"Another working president, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has also extended his support, full support outside and inside the assembly to the BJP-led present government. So these two are very important joining for us and I am sure that there will be many more joining in days to come," Sarma said.

Sarma was hopeful that “there will be many more joinings in days to come".

He said the Congress's "downhill journey of Congress began" when "people saw Rahul Gandhi in the street of Assam and they clearly realised that he is boycotting the Pran Pratishtha ceremony".

"I am sure that barring 4-5 MLAs, I do not think in days to come, maybe six months, one year, two years, other people will remain in Congress party," Sarma said.

Over 12 crore Indians have adopted online shopping in the country in recent years, PwC report

Indian shoppers have embraced online marketplaces with open arms. According to PwC India's latest report, 12.5 crore (approx) have adopted online shopping in the country in recent years, with a significant portion hailing from tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. More than 60% of surveyed respondents said they prefer online shopping via “mobile applications" due to ease of navigation, user-friendly interfaces, and vernacular support.

The report underlined that tier 2, 3, and 4 consumers are driving the retail revolution in the country. With "more brand choice, exchange of products, cash on delivery options, etc" e-shopping has not just become convenient but also a lifeline for non-urban dwellers largely.

Online retailers must minimize wares being returned

According to Somick Goswami, Partner, and Business Transformation Leader, PwC India, the next phase of growth in e-commerce will be driven by consumers from tier 2, 3, and 4 cities because “online shopping provides a gateway for more brand choices as compared to physical stores".

The PwC also pointed out that online shoppers largely rely on YouTube while buying a product because of the platfrom's content that comprises unboxing videos, usage experience, etc.

'How Indians shop online: Urban vs Rest of India'

Further, the PwC India report highlighted disparities in e-commerce shopping patterns between urban and rural India. While urban dwellers are enticed by perennial discounts and the convenience of online shopping, consumers from the rest of India regions are driven towards online shopping by factors such as limited product availability and stockouts in local offline stores.

According to the report, 50% of consumers in metros and tier-1 cities value quick delivery, while for 54% of consumers in tier-2, 3, and 4 cities, deals and offers take precedence.

Scientists Find Oceans Of Water On Planet Forming Star

Posted By: Pawan George Posted On: Feb 29, 2024
HL Tauri is a part of one of the largest and closest star-forming regions to Earth.

HL Tauri is a part of one of the largest and closest star-forming regions to Earth.

In a major breakthrough, scientists have found large amounts of water vapour in a disk of dust circling a baby star. According to space.com, the infant star is filled with enough water to fill Earth's oceans three times over. The discovery is important in astronomers' quest to find signs of life in planets other than Earth. The water was found in the form of vapour locked up in gas and dust within the disk surrounding the sun-like star HL Tauri, located 450 light years away from Earth in the constellation Taurus.

The research detailing the process has been published in Nature Astronomy.

The discovery was made using the Atacama Large Millimetre/ sub-millimetre Array (ALMA), which helped scientists zoom in on the water vapour.

"I had never imagined that we could capture an image of oceans of water vapour in the same region where a planet is likely forming," Stefano Facchini, the lead researcher and an astronomer at the University of Milan, said in a statement.

"Our results show how the presence of water may influence the development of a planetary system, just like it did some 4.5 billion years ago in our own solar system," the statement further said.

Researchers have always wondered how Earth got its water, a key element needed to form and sustain life. Some studies suggest it came from comets and asteroids. Others suggest water was present when Earth was formed.

Promoted

This discovery will help them understand how water came to HL Tauri. Science Alert said it is less than a million years old, and surrounded by a broad, cool, stable disk.

HL Tauri is a part of one of the largest and closest star-forming regions to Earth called the Taurus Molecular cloud. ALMA's sensitivity allowed astronomers to determine the distribution of water in different regions of the HL Tauri disk.
